I think that Hathaway did his degree but was it Cambridge?

He knew quite a lot of the classics stuff that Morse would have got didn't he?

But Lewis living alone by then was quite reminiscent of Morse.

Although Lewis then got married to the pathologist, didn't he?

Not sure if they married, but they certainly decided to be together, didn't they?

I remember a particular episode where he'd decided to give up being a detective and was building a boat (which he found very boring). She was getting fed up with him mooching around at home.

I would love a "Hathaway" spin off. My last NN very much stated my appreciation of him!

I'm 99% sure that Hathaway completed his Cambridge degree. He left the seminary though. I think I prefer Strange as a separate figure, I'd rather not watch him grease his way up the pole.

Yes, I recall that too @diddl. So he wasn't properly retired for probably more than a couple of episodes!

No doubt some emergency drew him out of retirement!

Did he retire at the end of the series?

I remember the first one & the references to Morse.

Thought that it was very good-sad as well though.

Lewis did retire and did get bored.

Hatahway was a very bad lead dective and boss to his very nice female sargeant.

Then there was a staff shortage of something and Lewis came back as a sort of consultant and Hathaway felt he was being judged as not up to the job.

From having been a sort of saintly person he did turn a bit nasty (the later episodes where he was a real shit to his sister who had been left to look after their father).

And up thread someone said about was he every romantically involved. I am sure there was an episode when some femme fatal (spelling?) nearly seduced him, very much like Morse poor upper class twit taken in by women whilst nice working class Lewis manages to have straight forward relationships with wife and daughter. Any way this woman took him back to her flat and then set it on fire or something? And Lewis rescued him? Or maybe that was a totally different detective series.

The only nice thing (or it may have been a bit aren't I virtuous) that Hathaway did was when he somehow worker out that a man arrested for a totally different crime, was probably the hit and run driver that killed Lewis' wife.

I watched much more Lewis than I did Morse, because I thought Morse was such pompous shit! And I felt sorry for Lewis having to put up with his sneering snobbery and paying for the beer!

poor upper class twit Morse/Endeavour never give me the impression that of being from a privileged background though (although Hathaway clearly was).

ISTR that in Endeavour they said that the files on the children's home abuse case had been closed for 50 years or similar. I'd like an episode of Lewis where the files are reopened and reinvestigated, as I think they did say there were people who got away with it at the time.

Roger Allam was also the original Javert in Les Mis and is on the original cast recording. His voice is absolutely superb.

First time I knowingly came across Roger Allam was in the second series of The Missing

Watched last one tonight, bit implausible but really enjoyed it, especially with the " back streets of Naples" moment ( I said to DH, her name is really Marie Claire!"). And the "Ti amo" was the West Side Story moment! I really like all the characters, which makes a change. Just wish we didn't know that he will end up living alone.

That's one of the saddest things about watching Endeavour - we know where this handsome young man ends up. The scene in the pilot where he's arriving in Oxford with the same music from the final Morse playing (Faure's requiem) always wells me up.

Yes, that scene in the pilot episode was very moving. And I loved the scene where he first meets the reporter (played by Abigail Thaw, John's daughter). She says something like "Haven't we met before? " He replies " No, I don't think so", and she smiles at him and says " Perhaps in another life...."

I haven't watched any of the Morse episodes since they were first shown. Just watched 'Dead on Time' featuring his former fiance, Susan. With a very young-looking Adrian Dunbar!

I watched Death Is Now Thy Neighbour yesterday just to see Roger Allam. He's a very handsome man and his voice is lovely so I might have to start watching Sarah and duck!

Does Morse fall in love with a 'wrong 'un' woman every episode? It seems that way from the few I've watched so far.

Finding the Morse series a bit clunky and heavy going and just so retro (well, I guess they are nearly 30 years old).
