The attacker chased down by the college women and knocked down by the car was the 'fitness fanatic' in the tracksuit who found the first murdered woman on the towpath. Morse said something about the experience maybe awakening something in him and they think he was inspired to commit a copycat attack.

Is that the final one ever ? Going out with a bang ? Because the implausibility of the last few scenes, with Fred dashing over to Venice was jumping the shark, I thought .

I think there's one more series of 3 episodes.

Yes there is supposed to be at least one more series. Nothing more confirmed yet, but Shaun Evans has apparently hinted that he might want out after that, that they're in danger of 'milking it'. I agree about the jumping the shark. I think it's unlikely that they'd have ended up in Venice - to get instant travel there on the 'boat train' for both of them, fancy hotels and opera at last minute, would cost a fortune; how would Fred be able to find him so fast; the letter didn't say where he was staying or anything. And just the fact that they're suddenly devoted to each other again. They said some horrible things to each other, particularly Endeavour to Fred, and it was a huge change of heart for him to admit all that, given that we know he continues to think of himself as 'always right'.

It all went a bit “ Don’t Look Now”, with the return to Venice with the water taxi and moody lighting. I was expected a small person or a child in a red hooded coat with a large knife to turn up in the graveyard and have a go at Endeavour or Fred.

Oh I liked it - I mostly liked the symmetry between the final scenes and the opera -
I know it failed some plausibility tests but this episode had everything for me.

It was terrifying, I had to finish it to get it out of my head. That’s got to be the scariest of the lot.

I've decided that Constable Strange is much nicer than Morse & Thursday! Grin

Well that was over the top. I hate to admit it but I sort of lost interest about 2/3 of the way through. I was so worried Fred was going to die of a heart attack.

But it seems strange that if he and Morse and back of speaking terms why he is going of to work with Arnott (which some superbrain on here pointed out he had to go next).

I should like it when they bring in feminist themes, but they are usually so hammy that I dont like them. Though loved the idea of a whole gang of women were ready to chase any man who approached their decoy!

Questions I have which I hope someone can answer.

Didn't the man who it turned out was the killer previously was said to have 3 witnesses who saw him at the time of the first murder.

And, isn't the story line about the pub fire, the children presumed lost or kidnapped one that comes up in a later Morse. Or maybe even in a Lewis?

Anton Lesser really good again. And what a horrible irony that his wife apparently on the way to recovery should be killed in this way. Sad

And as someone said up thread, it does seem that Strange is maybe a better policeman as he does listen to Morse but doesn't get into the ego competitions.

And liked it that the pathologist (is that what they are called) put them in their place.

If the next, last series is supposed to take us to the start of the original Morse then he needs to up his beer drinking and get some grey hairs.

I dont know why I felt let down, but I think the whole Venice thing was like some silly action thriller and not in keeping with the overall feel of the series.

I think that 3(?) more eps will put them at the same number as made of Morse & Lewis.

I would think that that would be a good stopping point.

I am sure that plot device about the insurance policies being a cause for murder was in a book or tv series, but I can’t remember which one. Can anyone else remember? Could it be a an Agatha Christie? Or a Sherlock Holmes?

So, what will happen in the next series to explain why Morse has never mentioned Fred Thursday?

I adore Shaun Evans, but I agree that last night's episode was a bit overblown. I'm quite amused at the thought of that glamorous Italian lady nobbling all those ladders Grin.

CoolCarrie Yy I felt the same sort of half remembered plot, I did enjoy it but felt it was at times trying to be a bit to clever/melodramatic & the song reference towards the end was a bit daft.
Yy Strange actually being very nice & Fred Thursday explanation could be interesting in the next series if it does take us to the start of Morse.

I’ve been quite disappointed by this series. I think that plot may have been an old Taggart.

Also the timeline is working for me really. When is McNutt who taught Morse everything go to make an appearance? He was mentioned but we haven’t met him yet. I also can’t see how Strange & Morse are going to proceed to their Morse police ranks.

Maybe we're barking up the wrong tree thinking that Morse and Thursday have a big fall-out. Perhaps Endeavour morphs into Morse who lives in the here and now rather than 'what happened/might have been' (as he seemed to do as a young man). It could just be a case of moving on and not looking back?

Jux · 24/02/2020 19:41

I agree that this series has been a bit of a disappointment so far, in its writing. tbh I spent more energy deciphering my crochet pattern last night than I needed to use to follow the plot.

I've decided that Constable Strange is much nicer than Morse & Thursday!

I loved it when he gave them both a talking to. Also loved Max deBryn in that scene; he's brilliant.

Anton Lesser is rapidly becoming one of my favourite actors.

I think I've got my head around last night's plot. My difficulty with this was not helped by DH not putting it on +1... We've had two nephews staying with us this weekend - 4 and 2. It was lovely but I knew how knackered I'd be and was really looking forward to settling down with Endeavour and a glass of wine when they'd gone. A busy evening meant we started to watch at 9 - I missed the beginning as was settling poorly DD.

It did all seem to be quite climactic very early on, and I wasn't sure about some that was going on. In fact it became more and more confusing until I realised that DH had put the TV on ITV not ITV +1 so we'd watched the second half!

So we watched the second half, then the first half on ITV player. With me occasionally muttering "you pillock" at DH.

Oh Anton Lesser just breaks your heart doesn't he? So beautifully acted.

Did anyone else think the 'ludo' character standing next to a gravestone with that name on at the end was a bit much?!

The letter to Joan-did Morse say that he loved her?

"Should things end badly, please believe me to have been yours, always".

Or am I completely misreading it?

CoolCarrie · 24/02/2020 22:10
