From what I’ve had read over the years Michael ‘s family didn’t like Paula. She and Michael both needed a bloody good talking to about their behaviour, if they had been living in a crap estate , instead of in fancy houses, they would have had social workers involved with the care of the children

EachandEveryone · 29/12/2019 13:46

And I didn’t understand her friend saying the stupid nanny let someone into the house. Who? Journalists? The police?

OP posts:
noodlenosefraggle · 29/12/2019 15:49

Yes that was odd the friend saying that
Typical showbiz types living in a bubble. I wouldn't be surprised if the nanny was scared for the welfare of the children so let the police in. That's not stupid. Its responsible. Was it kathy Lette who said that? I know she was talking during the latter part of that section.

I don't believe Paula was free from drugs when she met him. They were toxic together. I agree both Paula and Peaches both did the earth mother thing, but for both of them, I think it was in a desperate attempt to hide or get away from drugs in a fake it til you make it way

I don't think she was ever free from drugs tbh, not as we knew her on TV anyway. No wonder Bob fought for the kids. If he was controlling I imagine it was an attempt to control the chaotic life she created by using drugs ( I have family experience of addiction)

I didn't realise Michael had already moved on from Paula when he died .

I had NO idea about the head injury Shock

That bit at the end when he's sitting at the piano singing, omg ,what a voice.

Junie70 · 29/12/2019 16:34

I felt so sad watching it. Such a presence and yet so fragile.

All those kids now growing up without parents, all because of drugs.

What a legacy for poor TigerLily. I hope she's managed to break free of the cycle.

Jellykat · 29/12/2019 16:40

greenpeach If you remember Paula wanted to take all the kids to Australia FOR CHRISTMAS just before Micheal died, Saint Bob took her to court to stop her.. and yes he did bring up Tiger Lily as his own, despite Michaels dad fighting for custody.
When Micheals mother was dying of cancer, the family asked for Tiger Lily to be allowed to visit her in Australia to say goodbye, and Saint Bob wouldn't allow it.
The fact Tiger Lily now lives in Australia skint, while Saint Bobs kids lived with the back up of his money, says it all.. If he considered Tiger Lily as his own, why was/is she treated differently financially??
That is why i think revenge came into play at the time!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 16:56

I think ultimately Bob was trying to keep everything on an even keel , she would've wanted to take all the kids to Australia and there was probably a good chance she wouldn't have come back with them.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 17:03

** also if Paula had left the country, left to her own devices with Michael it would've been very likely the kids would be left without a mother.

bringbacksideburns · 29/12/2019 17:07

Weird to think if Paula and Michael had never got together they would probably still be alive today. They were just a deadly combination.

I'd forgotten what a good voice he had. I still think whatever else you say about Bob Geldof it was pretty amazing to take Tiger into his own home to keep her with her sisters. I do think Paula broke his heart which was why he made it so difficult for them and custody - and no doubt the drug situation didn't help.

SwedishEdith · 29/12/2019 17:13

I didn't realise that by the time of that Big Breakfast interview (imagine watching that if one of them was your spouse?), Paula had been already having an affair with him for two years.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 17:23

Had they? Did they say that in the documentary? I missed that. I thought that was the start of it.

Chipstick10 · 29/12/2019 17:50

I thought the Big Breakfast was the start of it as well

SwedishEdith · 29/12/2019 18:31

Well, tbf, it was from wiki when I was reminding myself last night about the details. Blush

But this was the bit

Yates first met Michael Hutchence in a 1985 interview on Channel 4's rock magazine programme The Tube. During this appearance on The Tube, Yates was reportedly asked to leave Hutchence alone by the road manager of INXS when she walked up to him and said, "I'm going to have that boy." Yates was unmoved and began to show up at INXS gigs everywhere for the next few years, even bringing her daughter (Fifi Geldof).[12] Yates maintained irregular contact with Hutchence during the intervening nine years and their affair had been under way long before their Big Breakfast interview in October 1994.[13] In February 1995, Yates left Geldof.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 18:39

Paula herself said that Micheal wanted her to come back to his hotel after the The Tube interview, but she said no, she had just had a baby, so make of that what you will, but Geldof’s bandmates called her Limpet due to her clinging attention.

DickDewy · 29/12/2019 18:58

I always thought Paula Yates was awful.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 20:00

Yes,I did too.

midsomermurderess · 29/12/2019 20:40

Tiger Lily seems to be loving a quiet life and she's going out with a musician in Pond, an off-shoot of sorts of Tame Impala. I am curious about a pp claiming that she is penniless. How does she, any of us, know about her finances.

Chocpear · 30/12/2019 01:20

Michael Hutchence was gorgeous, talented and sensitive. I know I would have been as mesmerised with him as Kylie seemed to be but he also seemed troubled due to a difficult childhood and unable to be faithful. He would have broken my heart. Sounds he broke his own too. V v sad.

ageingdisgracefully · 30/12/2019 10:22

The whole INXS thing passed me by. I've just realised that Hutchence would've been my age now had he lived.

He obviously had great presence and charisma but, to me, just another drug-addled star who came to a seedy end.

He looked very ordinary without his trademark flowing hair.

As I recall (and sorry to lower the tone) there were suggestions at the time that his death was an auto-erotic strangulation gone wrong?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 10:26

He looked dreadful with dyed black hair, what was he thinking?!

Yes,there was lots of talk about that but I'm inclined to think given his state of mind since the head injury that he hung himself on purpose.

RamonaFlower · 30/12/2019 10:38

I think Paula gets a lot of stick, (sometimes rightly) because she broke up the family she shared with Bob. However, I don't think (from some of the things I've read and seen) that he was the easiest person to live with even though he very clearly loved her.

I think Paula was a very funny, self deprecating woman who was beautiful in her own quirky way. She also had a quite difficult childhood. I think her relationship with Michael was very self destructive and they were one of those couples who were just the wrong two people to be together for a myriad of reasons.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 10:39

They were the worst combination possible!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 30/12/2019 12:20

'Weird to think if Paula and Michael had never got together they would probably still be alive today. They were just a deadly combination.'

I think it would have still ended tragically one way or another, they both seemed to be fragile narcissists on a self destruct path.

Sad to see his autopsy showed an extensive brain injury from the fall years before. If he'd have been made to stay in hospital and had received correct treatment that would have been his best chance to stop the downward spiral.

Awful comment from Noel Gallagher when Hutchence seemed so happy to be given them an award, what an arsehole.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 12:26

He was always an arseholeHmm

I agree,o don't think either of them would be alive even if they hadn't met.
