Im really looking forward to it. I was a huge fan back in my teens.

@EachandEveryone she said she was 21. She looked So young, like a teenager.

I wasn't suggesting anything untoward. she was pretty famous at the time so it would have been a huge scandal.

RamonaFlower · 30/12/2019 18:59

I wonder if Noel regrets the ‘has been’ comment, it deeply affected MH

I don't know but he used 'it makes me sweat' in one of his recent songs. I don't know if it was a tribute or not but apparently he even sung it the same way MH did.

And I know it was a terrible thing to say but I don't think it should be held against NG all these years later. We've all said daft things we regret. Famous people's just happen to be caught on camera.

Pinkarsedfly · 30/12/2019 19:06

Just watched it. Michael seemed very sweet but very damaged - more so after his ‘accident’ which seemed more like an assault to me.

I just can’t understand how Helena Christensen could have not rung an ambulance when someone she loved had a head injury and was laid up puking for a month. Or indeed anyone who was around him.

I just wanted to give him a big hug. Very telling that not one of his exes had a bad word for him.

I’ve been dancing round the kitchen to Kick - reliving the Summer XS Smile

Yes Pink a couple of people kept referring to it as a cycling accident In the film but HC was very clear that a Taxi driver punched him and he hit his head, I’m guessing he got away with it because if MH refused medical intervention then he would not have wanted the police involved either. I can’t understand why HC did not call an ambulance or doctor either, very strange.

Pinkarsedfly · 30/12/2019 20:31

It just feels like so often people like MH have nobody that has their back. So sad.

noodlenosefraggle · 30/12/2019 21:01

HC said in the film 'if only he'd stayed in hospital, so I wonder if he refused to go or something. Sometimes I suppose people don't think head injuries are that bad, but surely being punched that hard and then vomiting would be an immediate ambulance
And wasnt in her home country, so not a strange place to her at least.

Chocpear · 30/12/2019 21:32

I too thought in the film she said he did go to hospital but would not stay?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 30/12/2019 21:44

Just watched this.

I was never a fan of MH but omg this was so sad. It sounds like he had an unhappy childhood (and I can't believe his mother left Rhett behind when she took Michael to America) and the head injury obviously caused a major issue.

Everyone I know/know of who's met Geldof has been unimpressed, shall we say, but I saw Tiger once she was about 8 or 9 I guess, in a cafe on the King's Road with Jeanne Marine and she seemed happy. I really never understood how he got custody rather than MH's mother or sister though. It all seemed odd to me.

emilybrontescorsett · 30/12/2019 22:28

I saw INXS in the 1980s in a small venue.
They were fabulous.
Michael had the x factor he was so beautiful it's hard to describe.

Beaniebeemer · 30/12/2019 22:35

He was utterly utterly beautiful inside and out. So sad what happened. I hope his daughter is happy

Cruddles · 30/12/2019 22:54

I can’t say I was a massive fan I just fancied him like mad and loved the one big hit they had

One big hit Hmm?

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2019 22:55

Did you know him?

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 30/12/2019 22:59

I don't think Paula would've touched drugs were it not for trying to keep up with MH's hedonistic & risk-taking lifestyle post the accident. I feel he was self-medicating & she wanted to keep him at any cost, even to herself. She cops a lot of flak but she was a warm, funny, clever woman who was treated appallingly by the media.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2019 23:03

Did you know her?

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2019 23:05

One big hit?
Did you even watch what's being talked about?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 23:16

I really never understood how he got custody rather than MH's mother or sister though. It all seemed odd to me

Maybe so she could stay with her siblings?

One big hit Grin

I'd bet my mortgage that Paula was a long time user well before she ever met MH.

2020BetterBeBetter · 30/12/2019 23:40

As I recall (and sorry to lower the tone) there were suggestions at the time that his death was an auto-erotic strangulation gone wrong?

I think that was Paula’s suggestion because she wouldn’t believe he had intentionally killer himself and, to her, a sex game gone wrong was a feasible and preferred action.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 23:42

That makes sense.

emilybrontescorsett · 30/12/2019 23:42

I do remember the media were vile about Paula long before she met MH.

EachandEveryone · 30/12/2019 23:57

Omg i said at the start it was him i was into and the music wasnt my cup of tea apart from Need You Tonight. That to me as a 19 year old was the only track I would've danced to be cause they weren't cool to me (at that age) I fancied him and Prince. Prince to me was as cool as fuck. I was into The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Clash etc. INXS would've been too commercial to me. At that age! 🙂

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2019 00:25

Was Prince too commercial too?

IfThingsComeInThreesWhyThisNow · 31/12/2019 00:28

In the UK Need you tonight was their one big hit yes - reached no.2 - it was their only single to make the top ten here.
Much as though I love Never Tear us apart, it actually only made it to no. 24, Mystify was no.14 and Suicide Blonde reached no.11. I'd be amazed if many MNetters could name more than half a dozen tracks tbh.
Need You Tonight reminds me of getting GCSE exam results. I am very old. And that scene in Coyote Ugly.

Never tear us apart is just beautiful - I also like Paloma Faith's cover of it.
EachandEveryone · 31/12/2019 08:19

Thank you that’s what I was trying to say.

Prince was not commercial in that way. When he first came out he definitely had a more cult following. He was like nothing any of us had seen or heard before and, dare I say it, he was much hipper than INXS.

I found the whole documentary fascinating, but so flattering to MH that I have more questions than answers!

It was beautiful to look at, and I enjoyed how we didn’t get the 'talking heads' thing but just the voices over old footage.

However I feel like it really glossed over how MH treated his girlfriends. Poor Kylie, she was so frank in her recollections. We were expected to accept these relationships as passionate fleeting things, too beautiful to last when come on, this is mumsnet! We know better than that!

diddl · 31/12/2019 08:38

"I don't think Paula would've touched drugs were it not for trying to keep up with MH's hedonistic & risk taking lifestyle"

Did she not already do drugs then?

I find it hard to imagine that someone who didn't already take drugs would have tried to keep up with him.

Wouldn't most have walked away & not have been interested in that lifestyle?
