CAUTION - HERE BE DRAGONS (PROBABLY) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 6 "BEYOND THE WALL"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 21ST at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. This is the penultimate episode this series!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

As a little warm up for later, HBO have just released a little teaser for tonight's episode here

MyOtherProfile · 20/08/2017 19:56

Just checking in...

Figgygal · 20/08/2017 21:16

Just watched it

Soooooo good

AdalindSchade · 21/08/2017 06:52

Oh em fucking gee

I was just thinking that the show had jumped the shark by having none of the main characters die beyond the wall then the fucking dragon Sad

AdalindSchade · 21/08/2017 06:53

I really thought Jon would be rescued by the other dragon and become its rider

WestleyAndButtockUp · 21/08/2017 07:37

I thought id made my peace with the time/distance issues.

My mantra was: it's just a TV programme; the stories can be operating at different speeds (Jamie's story could be taking place over months while Arya's story happening over days - and yet they're intercut in an episode.) That's fine.

But Gendry runs all the way back to the wall; then a maester sends a raven all the way to Dragonstone; then three dragons fly all the way across the continent to beyond the wall? IN A SINGLE NIGHT???

WHY WEREN'T WE TOLD THAT RAVENS AND DRAGONS CAN TELEPORT?

AryaUnderfoot · 21/08/2017 07:45

WHY WEREN'T WE TOLD THAT RAVENS AND DRAGONS CAN TELEPORT?

Minimum time they had to have been on that island was 3 days. That's at a push and with a raven that doesn't need rest/food.

In all that time the Night's King is just standing on a cliff waiting for the lake to freeze. Don't the White Walkers bring the cold any more? Are you telling me they had to wait for the Hound to throw the rock before they decided to test the ice? Was the Night King just waiting for the dragon to arrive so he could attack it? If that was the case, why get the wights to attack at all - just keep them surrounded.

These are 'beings' with enough intelligence and motivation to bring big fuck-off chains to drag a dragon out of the lake with. They were pretty crap in the battle. Those 10 men should have been dead 15 times over. If that is the might of the army of the dead, then a single northern house's worth of men-at-arms should be able to defeat them all. No need to unite the whole of Westeros at all.

AryaUnderfoot · 21/08/2017 08:01

I love the simplicity of the Lost Boys solution to the undead - kill the head vampire and all the other undead return to dead! Problem solved.

nigelsbigface · 21/08/2017 08:12

What a cracking episode...Gendry's ultimate landspeed running record aside...

But honestly why didn't Jon just leg it and get on the bloody dragon when he had the chance? Instead of killing a few more dead...

That's cost them a dragon that has.

Also Arya is now really annoying. how is she being helpful at all? I fail to see what Sansa has done wrong really...

And where is Ghost for gods sake?

nigelsbigface · 21/08/2017 09:04

In fact they've got quite the athletic team there.Gendry would rinse the Marathon and the night king would be a shoe in for the Javelin.Uncle Benjen in the Hammer, Golds all round.

WestleyAndButtockUp · 21/08/2017 09:22

Jon's quite adept at Olympic swimming ...

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 09:28

{grin] @ Olympic GoT team

Were they (knight king and Gang) waiting for the dragons - I can't decide if they are all knowing or stupid.

YY to Jon wtf why did he run back?

KentMum2008 · 21/08/2017 09:28

So Jon surviving in that icy water and for the freezing cold ride back to the wall surely means he's the ice to Dany's fire, right? He survives the cold the way she survives flames?

Summerisdone · 21/08/2017 09:29

Ok after the last few episodes I've been quite vocal about my distrust for Sansa and my joy that at least Arya was finally seeing through her if nothing else.

After this episode though I have to take it all back, Arya was pissing me right off with her snide threats, and why couldn't she just admit to Sansa that she found it hidden by LittleFinger if she was so sure of Sansas intended betrayal?
Then at least Sansa could have told Arya all about his conniving ways and that he's clearly set the whole thing up.

I also find it unbelievable that Arya has been through all this training and mastered the skills to become no one and be so cunning and conniving when necessary, but then the very first time someone tries to set her up she falls for it; it wasn't even that elaborate a setup either, and coming from Little Finger she should be automatically on her guard with him too.

Anyway rant over and back to the rest of the show; it was so good, I loved it all (except of course for the Sansa/Arya storyline.

I wish I hadn't seen the PP who put up actual script leaks in the other thread, because the dragon being killed and turned didn't come as a surprise to me, but I was still devastated because I've become rather fond of the big lizards.

I can't wait for next week, but I don't want it to come either because I'm not up to waiting over a year for the next season Grin

By the way, throughout that episode, I was thinking about something one of the cast said:

Global warming means there isn't as much snow. Filming Game of Thrones they couldn't find locations that were fully covered with snow.

KentMum2008 · 21/08/2017 10:30

I just said to DH 'what are we actually gonna do when it's over?' Like what will we have to look forward to? Apart from real life and all the exciting things it has to offer obvs, but I just mean TV wise. I like quite a few things that are on TV, but there's nothing I LOVE, that I genuinely count down the weeks until it's on again. And there's not a single show out there that I'd wake up at 6am on my day off to watch.....

SafetyBird · 21/08/2017 10:52

OMFG. That's all I have to say!

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 21/08/2017 10:58

That was so much fun time issues aside A friend watched the leaked episode and one of the things I guessed would happen was a dead dragon reanimated. That shot of the blue eye was beautifully done.
I didn't expect the undead bear though, that was cool as fuck. I can see now why they have no budget for Ghost, although I'd have taken a few shots of him over the bear tbh.

It was good to see that the dragons are vulnerable - they're such a force that I couldn't see how they could be beaten, but I can now! I was shouting at the screen for Dany to go for the Walkers and the Night's King, or at least cover her flank ffs!

I'm vindicated in my 7 series long hatred of Arya. Where the fuck is she going to go now? I've always said she's a dumb Stark and she's shown it. I was hoping this was a long game she was playing with Littlefinger but I don't think so anymore

That's so true Mango. It's the only show I truly get excited about, have quite a visceral reaction to (today I laughed, I cried, I jumped on and off the couch). I like nothing more than to have a conversation about it with fellow fans and love the YouTube breakdowns (Alt Shift X is by far the best).

What the hell will we do when it's over??? How the hell will we wait until 2019???

ChaircatMiaow · 21/08/2017 11:02

There's a Viserion obituary in the Independent. Lol
