I have a feeling that it wont be resolved totally next week. They will leave
A few loose ends so they can do another series. Its a shame Babtiste is dying. He is fab.,

Poor Keeley Hawes, she always seems to play such downtrodden characters too.
The monkey with the symbols , those toys freak me out a bit.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 17:45

"we find out why Sophie's mum killed herself"

We know part of the reason. Baptiste said that he had been investigating the father as a suspect in her disappearance and that level of accusation tipped her over the edge (literally, as it turns out).

What we don't know is why Baptiste suspected him (other than basic copper knowledge that statistically it's most likely to be family). Or if those reasons for suspicion are relevant in 2014/2016.

Which sprang the thought, why Switzerland as location of Driller's uncle's cabin? It's a European country where it is very hard for non-nationals to own property. Is Vaaren in a French-speaking canton? Was his uncle (and his mother) Francophone?

GoldenGumballs · 24/11/2016 17:45

Another pondering about Sophie. How has she coped in Switzerland alone. The poor girl has been captive all of her teens and adult life. How can she function in public. I don't think she's planning escape I think she's resigned to a life with dk and he's so indoctrinated her with his lies she knows nothing else.

Rubytuesday2980 · 24/11/2016 17:55

Hi. De-lurking to say...

  1. am enjoying this thread almost as much as the series!
  2. we now know that Gettrick slept with Nadia in Iraq, and she made reference to being ill, if she had a child as a result, that child would also be approx the same age as Alice. Is there something in this? Is the boy in the butchers shop their son? Who she had adopted locally and is the reason she came back to Eckhausen?
AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 18:00

She named Gulf War Syndrome as her illness (which is in itself a minor inaccuracy, as although there are number of illnesses consequent on service in that campaign, there is no one unified syndrome)

Charley50 · 24/11/2016 18:14

I think the only reason for two girls in the Iraqi house is so that they thought the girl got away so could 'innocently' burn the man to death, while unwittingly giving themselves a reason for future guilt / blackmail.

And I think the butcher's helper with learning disabilities is simply there to signify to the viewer that the butcher is a Good Guy, innocent of the crimes he's convicted for.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/11/2016 18:17

omg just watched and havnt read the thread so will go and read now - my musings on last nights episode

what a fantastic episode!!!!!!!!!!

i didnt get the connection of dk and adam at first in irac, then reliesed adam was dk and he liked little girls :(

stone and reed should have left him there after finding out he shagged that mans daughter at 13 ....

now we know how the boys sister died and the money each month, tho why didnt they check the house after they shot the man and before they burnt house down :(

seems weird the butchers wife was senior to stone all those years ago, and she looks fab blonde Grin

did anyone notice the padlock on basement floor was the one he took from iran?

i clicked the claping monkey at once and almost thought wow is that for alice ....

poor her being treated like that, so was it lena in the fire?

so lucy is sophies

glad stone isnt caught up in the sexacts , more for eves sake, tho shame she didnt go to dk/adam house to check, surely you would wouldnt you ..........

wonder when they will search for jorn, he said he was going away for a few days .....

obv baptiste will survibe and do a s3 as will have the op :) tho i said that weeks ago

im assuming sophie put flowers on reeds grave as maybe he helped her give birth/help lucy?

Yeah if it were just one girl in iraq then they would think she was in the house as they know about her so it would be more of a murder than an accident. Being an accident also give reed and brig more innocent qualities and helps explain Reed's guilty

MiddleClassProblem · 24/11/2016 18:29

Guilt not guilty

MargotLovedTom · 24/11/2016 18:30

Lark did Gettrick say he and Nadia slept together in Iraq?

Who is the bald headed man who followed Baptiste in Iraq, and who he hallucinated in the cookhouse? Are we to believe he has always been a hallucination?

MargotLovedTom · 24/11/2016 18:32

Aaagh last post I saw was from16.51!

Loads of x posts.

GrumbleBumble · 24/11/2016 18:33

Nadia said Driller Killer had been injured in Afghanistan prompting his move to a desk job. I'm sure she gave a year. Can anyone remember what year she gave for his injury? This is potentially very important.

Ollycat · 24/11/2016 18:44

DK injured in 2001 so dates fit - I do think he had an accomplice though (I'm still harking back to camper van)

Elendon · 24/11/2016 18:45

It's part of the pregnancy and loss of a child theme running through the series. Gemma said she wanted another child, obviously Sam didn't (that was such a sad moment).

Sophie and Alice and the little girl Lucy, who obviously thinks she has two mums (though Sophie might well have been in the basement with Lucy). Will Eve decide not to keep the pregnancy?

Sophie is stuck between a rock and a hard place. How awful for her. I believe she is good. She put flowers on the grave of Henry Reed and apologised to Hertz.

Ollycat · 24/11/2016 18:47

Who killed Henry?

Elendon · 24/11/2016 18:52

I also think another theme is paranoia. Gattrick was paranoid about the man walking the street, amongst other things obviously!

Hits at PTSD or Gulf War Syndrome (which Nadia was later diagnosed with).

Brain tumour's can account for paranoia and Stone is in a home for Dementia.

Kr1stina · 24/11/2016 18:53

I agree that she put the flowers on henrys grave because he saved her life by telling Adam that she needed surgery to save her life .

And I think Adam killed Henry

Elendon · 24/11/2016 18:54

Hints not hits.

I think we can confidently conclude that Gattrick killed Henry Reed, his mo seems to be injury to the brain to cause death.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 18:56

" we know how the boys sister died and the money each month, tho why didnt they check the house after they shot the man and before they burnt the house down"

Perhaps because, belately, they started thinking about their own security? They'd been sat in an Iraqi village in a single military vehicle for ages. They could have been interrupted at any moment, they'd shot one but might jig be able to take on his mates too. And they probably didn't fancy being the next in the meat hooks.

Nadia was at fault for not reporting Gettrick missing outside the wire. But the other two were also at fault - and at risk - for doing the same.

"did anyone notice the padlock on basement floor was the one he took from iran?" Yes, noted/discussed upthread.

"so was it lena in the fire?"
We don't know for sure.

"so lucy is sophies"
We don't know. They behave as mother/daughter and we know that Sophie has given birth

"glad stone isnt caught up in the sexacts"
Do we know for sure he isn't?

wonder when they will search for jorn, he said he was going away for a few days .....

obv baptiste will survibe and do a s3 as will have the op smile tho i said that weeks ago

"im assuming sophie put flowers on reeds grave as maybe he helped her give birth/help lucy?"

I'm not. It could simply be a remote signal to Drilla that the body-shifting RV is on for that afternoon.

MiddleClassProblem · 24/11/2016 18:58

Yeah, the ease in which he killed the singing cop was def someone who has done it a few times before and not in an army way.

GrumbleBumble · 24/11/2016 19:00

Thanks Olly if it had been later he would have to have an accomplice but he has been at the base rather than on active service for the whole time the girls have been missing.
A few people have commented that the DNA switch could be a bit of a plot hole but for me the total lack of search for "Sophie" is a big hole. "Alice" returns says she was kept with Sophie who was very weak and close to death. They find an empty bunker with no sign of human habitation but a handy clue, they make an arrest. They question the suspect he gives them nothing but there is no search. Why isn't someone looking for Sophie/her body?

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 19:07

Well quite, -Grumble

The French police would have been formally called in, not just a call to the retired copper who had headed the case. How did Eve forget his number anyhow? Plot hole to get Julien swiftly on the spot, I suppose, and give him scope to be a maverick. (Though they missed a chance to have a lovely Jean alongside lovely Jorn).

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 19:08

get (not 'forget' ffs!)

maryrosa · 24/11/2016 19:09

Why hasn't anyone missed Jorn? Why isn't Eve wondering where he is?

And did Eve phone Baptiste's wife out of concern OR was it because she thought his wife would haul him off home and therefore off the scent of her Dad whom she def realises is implicated.
And what did Reed do to get the flowers whereas the Brig only got that loaded comment from Sophie. (They knew each other)
But the real question, the big one, is: has our Soph really got a severe case of Stockholm syndrome OR, as I really hope is the case, is she faking it as a sophisticated ploy to free her and Alice?

Elendon · 24/11/2016 19:15

Mary Re Stockholm, which I thought first, I do hope you are right.
