How do you manage bikini line hair without shaving or waxing?

Bit personal I know, but how do you deal with your bikini line?

I get terrible rash and spots if I shave. Can't afford and can't find a waxer I'm comfortable with.

Was thinking about Nair but worry about the chemicals and safety...

Please let me in on your methods!

Ps I know I don't have to, and enjoy the freedom of a full bush but my hair is dark and it goes quite a way over the thigh/inside hip crease and my little one wants to go swimming more so I need a solution!

You can overcome this by doing it more frequently. It isn't perfect but if you are a bit more determined then it does work, just takes a bit longer.

Oh Okay, thanks. Is it painful ?

Panda89 · 26/06/2026 12:55

Philips IPL was a game changer for me.
I have very dark thick body hair, every method of shave/wax/cream ended in horrible rashes.
I used the IPL religiously for a few months in 2022 and have had no bikini line hair ever since. Not a single ingrown hair.

it helped also with strawberry legs and also reduced my armpit hair.

@UpToonGirlis the Lumea painful to use?

No, just a ping sorted of sensation. I used it on the highest setting everywhere and no pain.

I think there may now be some models out that work better for different skin and hair tones - I got mine 5/6 years ago when it was just advised for dark hair and pale skin.

YenSon · 26/06/2026 13:57

I only go swimming on holidays. But, I use hair removal cream every so often for a big removal and keep on top of it by shaving regularly until I forget or need to replace the blade and don’t have one, then do the hair removal cream again.
i have an IPL device which I also use mainly for legs but have used on bikini line. I’m so inconsistent with it, which doesn’t work as you need to use it at the right time and to a schedule.

Trim rather than shave. Electric razor with a guard on the end, then you're just cutting it short not shaving it off. Therefore no rash.

Equivalent to having an elastic band snapped on your skin, but the one I use has 5 levels of strength. To be honest I don't feel the highest one is anything to worry about, but you could just do it for longer on a lower setting (or build up to the higher one). if you go via the hire purchase option I mentioned you can return it at any time and only make payments on the month you have it so you can try it out and decide if you want to commit.

grooveraidiator · 26/06/2026 14:14

oh my days! big problem for me as im very pale but have very thick, dark hair! i get huge ingrown lumps even when ive done things properly with after shave in grown oil etc. im buying myself a philips lumea or the like for my birthday in a few months.

i personally dont want to remove body hair in the bikini area but feel pressure to conform and hate ingrown hair bumps.

SunnyRR · 26/06/2026 14:27

Laser hair removal

Tupster · 26/06/2026 14:32

Another vote for IPL device for long-term solution - total game changer. Short term, shorts style costume.

Ap42 · 26/06/2026 15:05

I have the same exact issue. I buy bikini tops and matching shorts from shein. Hides everything!

Monzo1ss · 26/06/2026 15:36

I just think laser hair removal is the only solution for me

i have sensitive skin so everything causes issues, both hair removal cream and shaving irritate my skin. I have never had a proper bikini wax from a salon, maybe that would help, but most of them use scented products which would probably irritate my skin! So yeah, laser is the next thing I’d explore

ContrarianContrail · 26/06/2026 15:50

Apologies if this is perceived as a hijack but I didn't want to start a specific thread.

My early teen daughter has this issue. I am reluctant to let her use my Lumea. I am being silly? What do others supply/suggest?

Onetimeusername1 · 26/06/2026 16:04

Get a pair of jammers for swimming

Mca4q · 26/06/2026 16:12

Get a wax warmer and bag of hard wax beads on Amazon and learn to do it yourself. The first time is intimidating, but so worth it in the long term. Hard wax is WAY easier on the skin than the fabric strips.

I started doing my own Brazilian waxing at home during COVID as I just personally hate the feeling of hair getting caught in lacy pants, and I reckon I've saved nearly £2000 not having to go to a professional for 6 years

namechange6766333545544 · 26/06/2026 16:21

Definitely home IPL. The best purchase I’ve ever made.

Frazzledfringe · 26/06/2026 16:25

I’ve got the Braun IPL Silk-Expert Pro 5 on its way from Amazon as we speak to tackle the same issue.

Can’t wait to use it, it’s on a Prime deal at the moment and you can spread it over 5 payments. I considered the Lumea but the Braun is quite similar and has a better offer currently.

JoB1kenobi · 26/06/2026 16:35

I have the same issue but I’m 40 and married for years so I don’t care any more. I have a wax once a year for holiday.

I cannot shave at all. I was lucky when younger that most beauticians would wax intimate areas but most will not nowadays.

I’ve tried epilation on the top of thighs and I’ve also bought my own stripless wax for the odd time I go away mid year or a quick weekend. Otherwise I’m bushy all year.

I do no and again take a head shaver to it and give it a good all over - it’s not good enough for bikinis, but shortens hairs without the pain.

MummyWillow1 · 26/06/2026 16:38

Wear shorts. Shein have swim shorts - my daughter wears them over her swimsuit.

I hate how high cut all the mainstream swimsuits are, it is so difficult to find anything with a modest cut.

330ml · 26/06/2026 17:15

I have a Braun IPL.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work on blonde hair. No IPL does.

PinkPonyCIub · 26/06/2026 17:54

@CucumberCool LASER when you can afford it. Save up or get a Wowcher. Had mine done in 2000 and havent looked back x

Raquelos · 26/06/2026 18:07

I have found that genuinely not giving a shit works pretty effectively for me 😁. Sometimes we just have to liberate ourselves!

BobbysDazzler · 26/06/2026 18:37

FrozenTodger · 25/06/2026 05:31

@Meadowfinchwhen you say body oil, do you literally slather that on in place of shaving foam? Or use the oil after shaving? Thanks!

Veet do an oil (I get it on Amazon) specifically for shaving and you can use it for both and I agree it's a game changer 😊

Voneska · 26/06/2026 19:22

I know how you feel and I have the perfect solution: you see You have not got to do it the way that MEN advocate. Just go to Any Bargain clothing store and bag yourself some Nylon flimsy Shorts, to wear OVER your BIKINI bottoms or one piece costume = SORTED. This covers all sorts of misdemeanors . A looks great.

RazorsAtDawn · 26/06/2026 21:47

Depends on what you prefer in a non swimming environment.......

Personally I cannot bear hair down there and I'm fully IPL'd apart from a small landing strip.

If you're not bothered then a shortie swimsuit/bikini bottom will suffice. Plenty of options out there.
