Is 'dont wear white for a wedding' known about other than on here?

I've always known it's not the thing to do but now I wonder if I read it on here - been here a looooong time!

I only ask because my DD's MIL is apparently wearing predominantly white for their wedding and DD thinks she doesnt know it's inappropriate. DD does know but possibly from listening to me!

FWIW neither of us are particularly bothered - I dont think it's like one of those MILs you see in the DM where it looks like an actual wedding dress but I wonder if other guests will be a bit 😯

It Is a known thing, even though some people appear not to know it!

Lots of white wearers seem to think that so long as their outfit isn't traditionally bridal, that it's okay. But imo, it's a colour reserved for the bride and in the photos, she should be the only one in white (assuming a traditional wedding).

Obviously if the bride is wearing another colour it's prob best to avoid that one and much depends on the pov of the bride. But largely, I'd say that her opinion should be adhered to on the day.

My friends mum wore a long white lacy dress to her wedding - it wasn't bridal and nothing like the wedding gown, but still smacked of "it's my big day toooo"! She got side eye from some of the guests.

Plenty of colours and beautiful outfits to choose from - it's not a big deal to avoid the colour the bride is wearing.

I didn’t know about it until reading it on here. In my 20s I had one ‘nice dress’ and not much money. It was a cream knee length shift dress and I wore it to my friend’s wedding with a long blue jacket. So in the photos I’m more blue than cream, but in the evening dancing I was there full on cream as the jacket came off.

Her mum has never liked me, and when I read about the white/cream thing on here I wondered whether she never forgave me for apparently trying to upstage her daughter.
