Chic French woman or old man sandal? Help.

Un4732 · 06/06/2025 12:09

I have been looking at these for a while - I think they look "cool French woman"/ a bit Sezane - but do they look like old man on hols?

I'm so undecided, they are quite different from my usual style, which is more feminine and heels - I completely avoided the clumpy DM/sandal thing.

I do like a swedish clog but they can be annoying to walk in.

I like them, don't look clumpy at all to me and I'm similar to you in my footwear choice! Think it depends what you wear them too. Look very comfy.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 06/06/2025 12:11

They’re not my cup of tea, but we’re all different, @Un4732!

PrettyPuss · 06/06/2025 12:12

I call them Fisherman style sandals. I think they are very in this summer. I like.

PrettyPuss · 06/06/2025 12:13

The first ones are nicer. If you're going to wear them, go for the more practical looking style as that is the style of these shoes.

Un4732 · 06/06/2025 12:20

I just always feel so over done and a bit old fashioned these days - I thought these were a meet in the middle! Thank you, maybe I'll order and see how they look IRL

They might be in but its a big fat no from me. I wore those in primary school in summer.

MissPrismsMistake · 06/06/2025 12:39

I don’t like either of those. Fisherman sandals aren’t meant to look ‘elegant’, so you’re missing the point by looking for dainty, heeled versions. To look good they need to be flat, and clumpy, and go all the way over the top of your foot. (And black is better.)

Definitely.

I agree with this. I’m a big fan of an ugly/clumpy shoe and I don’t like the ones you’ve linked. I think they are somehow too in between-y? Not quite a clumpy shoe but also not a delicate one.

ETA - I mean I don’t like the ones OP has linked. I think the Cos ones are much nicer!

MissPrismsMistake · 06/06/2025 12:50

@Un4732 I don’t think it’s necessary to embrace every trend in the pursuit of style!

But I think I probably feel (Hmm) that if you’re going to do a thing, stylistically, it’s probably going to be most successful if you choose something close to the original idea. You need to fully commit, not lean towards the dull, safe, ‘halfway’ version. Because otherwise there’s a danger of your outfit appearing timid, or even twee. (Which might be when you look in the mirror and feel vaguely wrong.)

In other words - take up only those trends that make you feel powerfully ‘you’.

henlake7 · 06/06/2025 12:52

idk, I like the tops but the soles would put me off. I think you need to go either very chunky or flat, the ones pictured are coming across as very 'sensible' IYKWIM.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/06/2025 12:54

I love the black ones. Completely different look.

SunnieShine · 06/06/2025 12:56

Dies anyone else remember how massively popular these were in the late '70s/early '80s?

I like the grensons ones here actually, thanks

As others have said. Do the trend or don’t do it. Compromise versions never look right.

Un4732 · 06/06/2025 13:01

Do you know what, you're right about the halfway mark - now it's been pointed out I see it. I'm just going to try on a few styles and if it's really not me will leave it. Thanks!

👍

Shetlands · 06/06/2025 14:18

I have a friend who looks elegant and chic in fisherman's sandals whereas I look ready to haul in the lobster pots (or as though I've escaped from a Famous Five adventure).

If you like how they look on you and they're comfortable, buy them!

Moveoverdarlin · 06/06/2025 14:20

Oh my goodness, I think they are truly awful.

Wolbutter · 06/06/2025 14:22

The Cos ones are great, the others are all ugly imo. Funny how they're so similar but my reaction was completely different

librathroughandthrough · 06/06/2025 14:24

Great thread. I love these style of shoes, especially the links the other poster suggested - both very nice. I have wide feet and my toes bulge out of the leather straps, so not a good look for me- really nice though. Also agree wholeheartedly with the other poster talking about fashion trends and you’re either in 100% or not- excellently put.

Apologies @MissPrismsMistake - both posts were from you - sorry didn’t clock the usernames.
