Chic French woman or old man sandal? Help.

I have been looking at these for a while - I think they look "cool French woman"/ a bit Sezane - but do they look like old man on hols?

I'm so undecided, they are quite different from my usual style, which is more feminine and heels - I completely avoided the clumpy DM/sandal thing.

I do like a swedish clog but they can be annoying to walk in.

I LOVE these

Just read the reviews and one (happy) buyer's husband told her she "looked like she had a couple of Bakewell tarts on her feet", and really, isn't that what we're all going for 🤣

BIossomtoes · 08/06/2025 10:27

You have to be very careful with Toast, those are definitely to be swerved.

SocialEvent · 08/06/2025 10:35

Oh those Grenson ones are beautiful! Want them now

SocialEvent · 08/06/2025 10:36

And now I want a Bakewell tart..

I was going to say did it come from Chelsea Girl. Did anyone have the maroon one with thin grey stripes?

Or maybe one of those tiered cotton skirts with the petticoat hanging under the hem? 😀

Oh Lord, the tiered skirts with petticoat trim, teamed with white ankle socks and plimsolls (at least in my case). Yep, I'm immortalised aged 12 in my 1978 school photo in that garb.
The thing I yearned for but never had, though, was a blanket coat. Sob.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/06/2025 11:23

They do seem very on trend just now. I don’t pretend to understand why, as I think they are beyond hideous, and yes, remind me of elderly European men on holiday (nothing against elderly European men on holiday before someone starts - I’m just not one, lol).

PiggyPigalle · 08/06/2025 14:09

I had a maroon pair, bought from a boutique on The Kings Road, Chelsea. Worn with a tiny mini skirt. Guess the era!
I happened to see an old pic of my daughter this morning when five years old, wearing a yellow pair. That was thirty two years ago, so they have longevity.

If anyone buys a pair then, pass them down, they'll be in fashion again.

I do think they suit the young. Worn with a midi dress when older?

deeahgwitch · 08/06/2025 14:22

I think they are both horrendous.
You did ask.

Do you know what, you're right about the halfway mark - now it's been pointed out I see it. I'm just going to try on a few styles and if it's really not me will leave it. Thanks!

I like them. They’re very of the moment. Disagree with the poster that says they are a half way house between dainty and chunky. It’s a completely different look!

Madcats · 08/06/2025 15:52

I've just had a flashback to my Dad wandering round the house in the male iteration, usually unbuckled so they jingled as he walked (He died 30 years ago).

The Torygraph reckon they are on trend this year, along with matelot striped shirts/jumpers.

My feet would be covered in blister plasters if I wore them for more than 2 minutes.

I agree that the straps can be awkward - I have some flat mules in this style that I got from Toast. Think the make is Vibae, possibly Finnish. They are very comfortable and look great with midi dresses.

These are the opposite of elegant. They even look dreadful on the model.

And for 165 quid too. They really did see you coming.

SwedishEdith · 08/06/2025 18:33

I bought the Celtic Company ones last year - the green ones linked. I really wanted to like them but they were so unflattering on me - straight back.

Fingeronthebutton · 08/06/2025 19:18

Gettingbysomehow · 06/06/2025 12:39

They might be in but its a big fat no from me. I wore those in primary school in summer.

My grandad had a pair, but having said that given the outfit your wearing I can see them looking good 😊

I didn’t say I thought they were elegant 😂.

Also love how the bakewell tart reviewer doesn't give a shit, she's like, "my husband called them bakewell tarts, yeah he's got a point, anyway they're great" 😄

slinkiemalinkiey · 09/06/2025 00:30

These are the kind of thing which you either love or hate. I hate them and don't think you would ever see a chic woman of any nationality wear them.

Sunnyevenings · 09/06/2025 01:13

I like fisherman sandals but think there are nicer ones than the ones you posted.

In a million years, I would not put 'cool' and Sezane in the same sentence.

It depends on your definition of chic.

Interesting, the review also says 39 fits her at 6.5. Must be a typo

A UK six is the same as 39 in EU sizing, they obviously come up on the big side.

Interesting, I find most 39 closer to a 5.5. Deichman actually call it a 5.5
