Chic French woman or old man sandal? Help.

Un4732 · 06/06/2025 12:09

I have been looking at these for a while - I think they look "cool French woman"/ a bit Sezane - but do they look like old man on hols?

I'm so undecided, they are quite different from my usual style, which is more feminine and heels - I completely avoided the clumpy DM/sandal thing.

I do like a swedish clog but they can be annoying to walk in.

We used to have to wear school sandals like this in the summer term. Clarks, they were. Nope. There are more stylish ones around.

I agree with this. I’m a big fan of an ugly/clumpy shoe and I don’t like the ones you’ve linked. I think they are somehow too in between-y? Not quite a clumpy shoe but also not a delicate one.

ETA - I mean I don’t like the ones OP has linked. I think the Cos ones are much nicer!

Edited

Also agree! You have to commit with your fisherman style, OP Grin
I much prefer a clumpy/Scandi-type sandal - I think they tend to look better with summer-weight clothes.

The in-betweeny ones do nothing for me. They look like the ubiquitous Seasalt/Saltwater sandals.

TheSilentSister · 06/06/2025 18:40

Hideous. Reminds me of junior school sandals we had to wear in the 60's. Nothing about them would make me feel or look good as an adult.
I've only just felt comfortable with a dress and pale trainers. Lol.

ViaRia01 · 06/06/2025 18:44

I am not sure either way about the sandals but I just wanted to say that when I read your thread title I immediately could see in my mind the exact style of shoe you were thinking of. So… perhaps you’re right and it is both!

yetanotherusername9183837 · 06/06/2025 18:47

I think they are absolutely awful but I don't like Toast stuff either and I think these shoes are probably the same aesthetic.

Puddlewoman · 06/06/2025 19:14

i think if you're tall and willowy you can make them work i am short and tubby and i would look like an evacuee in those

rightoguvnor · 06/06/2025 19:52

I think if you have a developed calf muscle, fisherman sandals are a bit dodge. As I found when I bought some from Jones last year. I felt short, frumpy and looked like I was stomping around in a strop. They were a beautiful leather though. But were added to the (huge) pile of ‘I’ll never wear but they cost a bomb, I can’t just charity shop ‘em’ stuff that lives at the back of the wardrobe.

amberisola · 06/06/2025 20:25

Very fashionable and comfy but hard to pull off I think. They cut you off at the ankle and make you look shorter, which does me no favours (but then I'm already short and pear shaped with wide feet so need all the help I can get)

TroysMammy · 06/06/2025 20:48

I'd say they were more 1970s children's sandles worn with knee high white socks or frilly white ankle socks.

RobertaFirmino · 06/06/2025 21:02

TheBadLuckOfTeelaBrown · 06/06/2025 16:48

These all scream old man. Or old German man with socks on (I love old German men with socks on just FYI).

It's not a proper holiday if you don't meet one IMO.

WRT fishermen's sandals, they aren't 'chic' as such, they are just one of those items that is just 'there' - neither in or out.and don't look French. If we are to attribute them to any nation, surely it would be Greece?

LittleHouseOnThePrarie · 06/06/2025 21:04

It's a NO from me. Clumpy and unflattering.

It's highly amusing how all these things 'come back in' as we wore those at school in the 1960s. At least some kids did (I hated them them as I do now.)

'Fashionable ' is usually some design that we are told is IN FASHION and is totally different to anything else that's bene around for a few decades AND IT'S ALL TO MAKE US SPEND MONEY.

Barney16 · 06/06/2025 21:16

I'm buying the Doc Martens ones because if you are going clumpy ugly you have to really commit.

OldWomanInACardigan · 06/06/2025 21:21

They're SO ugly. I'm mid-60s and wouldn't been seen dead in them

MissPrismsMistake · 06/06/2025 21:45

I can live with your disagreement, @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle. Grin Even without seeing it I can be certain yours is a well considered look.

For myself I’m giving them a miss. Can appreciate the style on other people but they would not make me look good. I like clumpy boots and luxurious brogues and breathtakingly delicate mules - I’ve never seen a pair of fisherman sandals that would make me happy.

weareallcats · 06/06/2025 21:53

I agree that the straps can be awkward - I have some flat mules in this style that I got from Toast. Think the make is Vibae, possibly Finnish. They are very comfortable and look great with midi dresses.

They might be the worst shoes I have ever seen.

Oh I didn't scroll all the pictures. The Grensons look much nicer on. I'd wear these with a black or red skirt or dress.

If you want a French look then why not just get the sezane ones

I have a photo of myself wearing these in 1981, with my stripey polo shirt dress, which was also all the rage 😀 Does anyone remember those?

Yep, me! I had a blue/white stripey one and navy fishermen's sandals, though I'm pretty sure we didn't call them that then.

cheesycheesy · 06/06/2025 22:41

They are god awful.

They look nice on a young slim model. The average person would look like a Quaker. But then that weeks to be fashionable at the moment.

Mine was white with thin red and green stripes. God, I loved that dress!

I just remembered I had a plain bright blue one too with a white collar. It came from Chelsea Girl and had an imitation Fred Perry style embroidered logo on the front to complete the look. Ah, those were the days...
