Chic French woman or old man sandal? Help.

I have been looking at these for a while - I think they look "cool French woman"/ a bit Sezane - but do they look like old man on hols?

I'm so undecided, they are quite different from my usual style, which is more feminine and heels - I completely avoided the clumpy DM/sandal thing.

I do like a swedish clog but they can be annoying to walk in.

Definitely remind me of my primary school shoes so it's a no from me.

LatteLady · 09/06/2025 16:45

It's a no from me... the nuns in the Convent where I went to school in the 60s/70s wore them in the summer.

It depends on your definition of chic.

Indeed! 😂 I bet if I googled " chic French women " they wouldn't come up though . Yup just tried it and nope the sandals aren't there 😂

BIossomtoes · 09/06/2025 18:12

I just did the same. The images Google gave me are far from my idea of chic.

But did they have those sandals? 😂

Irrelevant because they weren’t chic.

Justkoko · 09/06/2025 18:54

These are a bit more relaxed and summery?

I like them. They are casual but with a pair of wide leg, linen pants and crisp white shirt, they would look wonderful.

Ceramiq · 10/06/2025 09:26

I think they are absolutely awful!

DilemmaDelilah · 10/06/2025 10:05

When I first read your post I just knew they were going to look like that before I saw the picture!

I wore these when I went to college as an 18 year old in 1978. I wore them with neon socks, a multi coloured striped cotton grandad style long shirt with a hessian look gathered skirt and wide belt over. It was ironic fashion at the time. 'School' sandals, which these were, basically, were deeply unfashionable, so I made them stylish. It worked at the time! I didn't have the money to buy the latest fashions so I wore anti-fashion.

I do NOT suggest you style them like I did!

spoonbillstretford · 10/06/2025 15:02

Sorry, not for me, they make my feet hurt just looking at them.

They are like the sandals kids were made to wear in the early 1980s when you wanted a pair of these.

Ignore me though, it probably just means I am officially Old, as I remember my mum saying something similar about Dr Martens boots in the 1990s.

Blimey, I never saw anyone dressed like that in 1978. It was all knee high boots and gladiator sandals where I lived.

Un4732 · 10/06/2025 17:21

You know what, all the alternative ones that have been linked have put me off the whole idea. Particularly the Birkenstock sole ones.

I have the Leah suede fisherman sandals from Free People nd have only had compliments on them at work, where they have noticed(do just work with men in IT) and friends but also had the for infant school in the 80s😄

OhBuggerandArse · 10/06/2025 21:41

MrsJoanDanvers · 07/06/2025 08:47

Oh I love those. Does anyone have them? What is the sizing like?

The whole point of fisherman's sandals is the closed toe so you don't have to wear nail varnish - why bother with all the leatherwork if your toes are still going to poke out?

I like those! Those people saying they are awful, what do you recommend instead? I want something to wear with maxis and linen trousers which are comfortable but not old lady. I really like the Free People, Grenson and Cos ones-Cos do a gorgeous jelly pair but I’m not paying 110 quid for that. Sezanes are nice but not sure about sizing-I think my feet would be too wide. Fishermans look easy to wear and would make a change fom Birkenstocks-any other suggestions?

Agreed. The Sezanne ones look a bit silly compared to all the other suggestions.

SirChenjins · 11/06/2025 00:01

God no - they were worn back in the 60s and 70s and weren’t cool then either. They are also a blister-fest - too many leather edges rubbing on your feet.

TiredofTheirCrap · 11/06/2025 10:31

On a tall, slim person, these look amazing. On me... not so much 🤣 definitely try before you buy and take an honest friend with you xx

Candelabra75 · 11/06/2025 12:44

I wear shoes like this to work in the summer - I think they are feminine, practical and understated. They allow your feet to breathe but mean you don't have to stay on top of your pedicure. I've had nothing but compliments - I guess the people who don't like them keep their mouths shut. There is nothing I hate more than looking at people's dry and cracked heels, dusty toes and growing out nails; smelling or hearing sweaty feet in ballet pumps. I think it is more elegant and professional to keep feet covered up.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/06/2025 17:07

Today I bought (following orders) these white ones for 19yo DD from Bata. She needs to do a lot of walking this summer. Down from 50 to €30 so they’re obviously not selling.
At that price I might go back for the black version. Grin
