Chic French woman or old man sandal? Help.

I have been looking at these for a while - I think they look "cool French woman"/ a bit Sezane - but do they look like old man on hols?

I'm so undecided, they are quite different from my usual style, which is more feminine and heels - I completely avoided the clumpy DM/sandal thing.

I do like a swedish clog but they can be annoying to walk in.

The shoe you are showing is an old classic called a fisherman's sandal. Along with penny loafers, espadrilles, and huaraches, they are timeless, unisex, and versatile as summer footwear options. They aren't bare and overly casual like thong or strap sandals, if you are going places where there are rocks, stones, gravel, grass or sand, they offer the toes some protection, give the foot air, and yet look enough like a shoe to give some dignity to an off-beach summer ensemble due to more leather in the toe area. They are a good wardrobe staple to have, regardless of what others think.

You feeling okay, @Sandallady?

I have these exact sandals from La Redoute - (although I paid half-price!) They're nice, but I think at full price, they're over-priced for the finish & quality. But I've had compliments on them - and they're comfortable from first wearing. But they're really just everyday sandals - not half as smart as Carel pumps or the Sezane copies.

I'm waiting for these to arrive:

I call them Fisherman style sandals. I think they are very in this summer. I like.

They're known as Fisherman's sandals, and they've been around for a long time. They hit "fashion" about two summers ago.

They actually ‘hit fashion’ in the 1980’s too!

ParmaVioletTea · 15/06/2025 23:16

Yes, I remember that. And the "jesus sandals" of the late 1960s and 70s. I've always had a pair of sandals a bit like the fisherman's sandal. I like the closed toe and the structure - I dislike flip flops and Birkenstocks and those Dr Scholl wooden clog-things - they cramp up my feet.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 16/06/2025 06:11

Now I'm wondering if I have any of my Dr. Scholl's wooden sandals hidden away somewhere. I used to wear them all the time, but sadly, my feet got longer and wider over the years. Great exercise for the legs.

Wolmando · 16/06/2025 06:53

I have Josef Seibel Rosalie sandals which are similar style, they are very comfy, I am old, tall and fairly slim with slim calves but whatever I wear I am not going to look young and fashionable. They are my favourite sandals

faffadoodledo · 16/06/2025 07:27

As an inveterate Birkenstock wearer I am quite drawn to fisherman's sandals. But I do find that they make my ankles look less than shapely. And I have nice ankles and slim, athletic calves. So they don't seem to be for me unfortunately. Because I do love a sensible sandal

MissPrismsMistake · 16/06/2025 11:21

So you look ‘old and fashionable’, @Wolmando? Sounds fabulous.

Gerbilboy · 16/06/2025 15:29

I have these, the usual fishermans are too chunky for me and I used to love the more delicate gladiator style a few years ago so these were a perfect compromise.

Not sure why some pp are saying you have to follow style trends 100%, surely you wear whatever you like and suits you?

I've had a couple of colleagues asking where I got them from and got plenty of compliments.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/06/2025 16:04

Dr. Scholl’s Pescura sandals (the classic wooden, single strap style) came back in the 90s. I still wear them on beach holidays (can’t stand wet flip flops) and really feel the benefits.
