Chic French woman or old man sandal? Help.

I have been looking at these for a while - I think they look "cool French woman"/ a bit Sezane - but do they look like old man on hols?

I'm so undecided, they are quite different from my usual style, which is more feminine and heels - I completely avoided the clumpy DM/sandal thing.

I do like a swedish clog but they can be annoying to walk in.

I like them and I have some in black. It depends how you style them. I like wearing mine with barrel leg cropped trousers and a white airy cotton blouse. They also look nice with a very simple neutral maxi dress.

Revolting. You wouldn't look out of place at The Green Party Annual Conference.

This is a weird insult...I mean, fine, you care about the environment?

Justsomethoughts23 · 12/06/2025 08:40

I actually like them but wouldn’t wear myself because I think the rest of the outfit needs to be quite scandi/androgynous/Cos

GreenLeavesInJuly · 12/06/2025 08:44

You need dainty legs to wear the dainty ones. Clumpy ones will look more edgy and cool. Depends if you want a classic look or a cool edgy look.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 12/06/2025 09:45

I think they're awful. What next Startrite t-bar style shoes for adults! There's nothing elegant about them, they remind me of a teacher I used to have.

I look after my feet, give them a pedicure, paint my nails etc so my feet aren't horribly knarly or I put trainers on if they are.

They’re not supposed to be elegant. Elegance isn’t a look I aspire to. My look is Scandi and they fit perfectly with that.

SirChenjins · 12/06/2025 13:40

More like British school children c1965.

Coolcalmmoments · 12/06/2025 17:23

I'm sure my grandfather had a pair almost identical to the first pair.

Rina66 · 13/06/2025 01:09

I’ve got these from Zara, love the colour, shame they aren’t leather. They look good with shorts co-ords, crop jeans/trousers and dresses.

Sgtmajormummy · 13/06/2025 07:22

@Rina66
I have maybe 3 pairs* of that Zara style in leather that I put away years ago thinking they were “old lady” style.
I’ve been wearing Birkenstock Mayari ever since.
So there are benefits to having been round the block a few times…

They can chafe like crazy and depending where you wear them you will have very gritty feet. I had a similar pair from Toast and they never got comfy. Now I tend to wear driving shoes (like Tod’s, but cheaper versions).

slinkiemalinkiey · 13/06/2025 11:32

There's always going to be this debate about certain things. People will wear things because they are deemed to be " in fashion". With regard to feet there have been Uggs, Teva sandals , socks and slides and this type of sandal. All of these with the exception of Uggs ? would have been seen on people and would have been sniggered at. Now they are " French chic " 😉

I don't like them.

Clarks have been making this style of shoe for decades and it was always the favourite of middle aged/elderly women where I lived. I can't get past that.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/06/2025 13:47

I tried a very similar pair on in Sainsburys, clearly a lot cheaper but style pretty much identical and they looked horrid on me. I don’t like my feet so maybe that didn’t help. I just felt they cut my legs off and made them look shorter. I’ve seen them on others and they looked lovely. Get them and try them on?

MissPrismsMistake · 06/06/2025 12:39

I don’t like either of those. Fisherman sandals aren’t meant to look ‘elegant’, so you’re missing the point by looking for dainty, heeled versions. To look good they need to be flat, and clumpy, and go all the way over the top of your foot. (And black is better.)

These are just classic sandals not fisherman’s, they look just right as they are? The first pair that is, I haven’t looked at the second. I like the first pair.

newsflash- we already have those?

FiendsandFairies · 14/06/2025 15:21

Absolutely no way!!!

FiendsandFairies · 14/06/2025 15:23

I think the only way those shoes would work is on a tall, very slim woman under 25, wearing short shorts and a tight tank top unfortunately.

That’s exactly the kind of outfit they don’t work with. They look great with barrel leg trousers and a T shirt or to toughen up a dress. They’re the summer footwear equivalent of a leather biker jacket.

Totally agree here - these two are much more fashionable and could really elevate an outfit.

The OP’s are strangely giving sexually repressed vibes to me for some reason…

I agree and my very fashionable, makes her own clothes, has a back catalogue of Vogue, heading to fashion college teenager has complimented me on my pair from Free People, I tend to think she knows what she is talking about! Equally, you think it totally depends on the area you live in, your social group you hang out with, there isn't really one definitive view on fashion and certainly what constitutes good taste!

Nonsense. Sorry, but I'm so bored with these "that would only suit a tall, think, young model" type comment.

slinkiemalinkiey · 15/06/2025 11:26

I do agree with @FiendsandFairies that a tall very slim young woman would create a totally different vibe .

idk, I like the tops but the soles would put me off. I think you need to go either very chunky or flat, the ones pictured are coming across as very 'sensible' IYKWIM.

Yes too much of a heel was the first thing I noticed.
