Would you get married in this dress?

GinMama400 · 05/04/2025 21:05

We are getting married in a few weeks, on a little island in Denmark, just us and our two kids presnet (1&5). No guests, photographer+her assistant as a witness. Boys will wear navy / beige trousers + royal blue wool jumpers. Still need to think of what to get for my little girl. After the ceremony (it will only take 10 minutes max) we will go for ice cream and then to the beach for a run around.

I suppose I’m looking for some reassurance, dress is already here, I plan to wear a baby blue wool coat over it if it’s cold/ for outside. Still need to think of shoes - suggestions welcome!

What do you think re tights- no tights? Navy? Sheer?
Shoes - I like the idea of red little heals but I haven’t settled on anything yet!

Thank you all! I appreciate it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, to say the least! I also question how will the pattern photograph, it may look rather messy…but I do like how quirky it is.

I don't like it op, sorry. Your wedding plan sounds lovely. Can you not go for another outfit in a single colour?

But if you really like it, go for it.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 06/04/2025 09:47

I just don't think it's special enough to get married in sorry.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 06/04/2025 09:48

You'll look like a wedding guest rather than the bride.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 06/04/2025 09:50

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 06/04/2025 00:12

Yes I would. I think wear only once, generic white wedding dresses are awful.

Congratulations.

I don't think anyone is suggesting a big standard wedding dress as the alternative

Bunnie007 · 06/04/2025 09:53

It’s a yes from me. Love the birds and hearts- literally feels like it was made for a day like yours. I think baby blue coat could work but would then avoid red shoes and draw on the blues or even pink for shoes. Maybe find your daughter a dress in colour you decide to ‘pull’ out of dress to give photos a cohesive look. Look at those America family photo shots for inspo, they do a great job of pulling colours together into a pallet so the photos look so good. Look on Pinterest family photo shoot colour schemes : )

It looks a lovely dress for the wedding you described!

Do you know what is making you have doubts about it? If the pattern/business then you could try a solid red dress? Would still have the same colour pop against the blues 💙❤️💙

You'll look like a wedding guest rather than the bride.

But there aren’t really any guests except children.

Op I still like it today and struggle to think what else would work better for your particular wedding.

I think some people can’t get away from the bridal mag “ brides big day” vibe; but the style of wedding you have chosen is the very antithesis of that. It’s about being with just your little nuclear family with the children centred for a playful celebration of everything symbolised on the dress.

The only bit that worried me was the coat - which I thought might swamp or “kill” the whole thing; but I love the swing jacket suggestion above.

Also what does DP think? I know you get to choose, but if he loves it that would kind of seal the deal for me.

Doves are known as symbolising peace, but they also symbolise unity/ union as well as hope. And hearts are … well, love hearts! The dress isn’t me but then your wedding isn’t me: I was a traditional church wedding girl, bells ringing, clutching a bouquet of pastel roses surrounded by generations of both families in formal attire. But if I had chosen to celebrate our vows the way you have chosen, this would be the dress for it!

And yes op: the photos will work provided you pull the colour palette together. But I think you are already trying to do that with the shoes and the boys tops.

GroovyChick87 · 06/04/2025 10:17

No, I think it looks a bit too casual. Like something a teacher would wear at school.

I guess you could pull out the colour scheme for something plainer for you then have this dress made down into something for your little DD to keep the appropriate theme ( ie the fabulous print!) ?

But on the whole what I LOVE about this dress for a celebration with your Dc centred is that it looks like your Dc chose it for you. And I also love the “ freedom” of choosing a dress from a catalogue and making it your wedding dress. None of the contrivance or complication - which is really what you were trying get away from? Instead you are putting the sentiments at the heart of the day. I think if you start getting a dress made you are kind of going to ruin the spontaneity and simplicity.

Eastermuppet · 06/04/2025 10:32

I really like it, but what's important, is that you do. Not sure if a baby blue coat is the right colour for the coat but the dress and red shoes sounds great, think I would wear nude tights with it.

Birdsongsinging · 06/04/2025 10:45

Your wedding sounds lovely but I am not at all keen on the dress. Too much patterns and trying too hard to be quirky with the red hearts being a bit cringe. Sorry! You did ask!

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 06/04/2025 10:52

Absolutely love it and if you do too, who cares what others think. I think it works perfectly for the type of wedding you’re describing and also like the love hearts too, very apt! I would pair some red or bright pink shoes with it and have a little bouquet of the same colour flowers. Congratulations x

77Fee · 06/04/2025 10:56

I think these cotton dresses from Boden have deteriorated in quality from when I started buying them some 15 years ago. So I think it's first couple of wears it would look ok but they have no lasting power to them anymore.

CuppaWhiteTea · 06/04/2025 11:02

I love your vision and love non-traditional wedding dresses for tiny weddings. I’d say maybe shoes and coat in the same matching colour might look good? Will you be having flowers?

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 06/04/2025 11:06

I saw someone wear a non-traditional dress on Instagram and looked great, I don’t know her but here’s the pic from her page. So yes o can see the vision too 😊

Would you get married in this dress?
DrUptonsGardenGnome · 06/04/2025 11:09

I’m torn. Personally I think it’s a bit too busy and the focus might be on the dress, not you. On the other hand, I can see what you see in it.

I know you didn’t ask for alternatives but this is rather sweet and you could add a belt in a contrasting colour or metal and perhaps a dove brooch to bring out the symbolism? Mary Janes and a birdcage hat to complete the look as pp have suggested (especially if your daughter is wearing a sailor dress).

So not for the next couple of weddings then? 🤣

Bumcake · 06/04/2025 12:01

I think it’s ideal - do it!

GinMama400 · 05/04/2025 21:24

I looked at a lot of more plain/simple dresses but I kept coming back to this one. Something draws me to it although I know it’s a bit bonkers haha.

You keep coming back to this one, so I think it's probably the right dress for you.

Definitely not for me🤣🤣. I don't do print or colour, they just don't suit me, it would pull on the floor as I'm only really short and would generally look hideous as I'm really rather fat.

But your wedding sounds amazing!!

Why not order the dress and see what you think of it on? Given the type of wedding you're having I'd probably for vans or trainers in red, much more suitable for ice cream and the beach then Mary Janes or heels!!

I hope you all have an amazing day!!!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 06/04/2025 09:48

You'll look like a wedding guest rather than the bride.

I don't think that matters. With only half a dozen people there, it'll be pretty obvious who is getting married!

'The focus'

🤣🤣 her one-year-old her five year year-old or her husband to be?? The celebrant. The photographer., the assistant.

'focus' 🤣🤣🤣

Yup love the trainers idea op!

You can reinvent the wedding look completely if that’s what the day demands. The dress in itself is quite an elegant cut. One op said it looks like a teacher and I did think “those were the days of the Miss Honey vibe teacher!” Most teachers I see are in sports kit these days.

timetotwist · 06/04/2025 12:22

You know your own style so it's hard for strangers on the internet to advise without more info. I think it's a nice dress but for me it's not special enough. Your wedding sounds lovely though. If you want quirky and colourful I would have thought there were better choices but you're not asking for suggestions so I'll butt out!

If you're happy with that dress (and that's what's important) then red or navy shawl/jacket/shoes may work better than baby blue. Hat or headband thingy?

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 06/04/2025 12:30

The dress really isn't my thing, but will look great with red heels, and either a red or navy sheer tight. Another alternative is a navy sheer tight and white shoe. As the dress is so decorative, keep the shoe as simple as possible.

Congratulations for the wedding!
