Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

Stellajones · 12/02/2025 14:01

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

They look exactly like the kind of dresses the majority of girls at my DCs proms wore. I find the slit in the blue dress too much but lots of girls didn't at our proms. They're late teens, they love this kind of stuff. Get her to look at what her mates are all buying.

And I still think she can wear black if she wants.

MissTrip82 · 14/02/2025 06:23

I bet the blue looks good on a blonde.

This is what young women wear. I would personally not listen to the rude, vulgar posters using the word tacky’ etc to describe a dress a young woman likes. Those voices are schooled by misogyny and can safely be ignored.

Yoheresthestory · 14/02/2025 06:33

You can’t be serious. She’s not 54 yrs old.

OP it’s hard to know without seeing them on her. Teen girls love a light and revealing dress and both potentially fit the bill. Can you get both delivered and return one?

LeatherJacketWedding · 14/02/2025 08:39

Firstly, sorry to be pedantic but shes not ‘petite’ if she’s 5.6. Just say very slim or tell us her dress size. Secondly, please believe me when I say I know teenage girls can be complex *awaits accusations of sexism, but if they’re best friends, can wearing the same colour not be re-spun as a ‘cool’ thing? I’m not talking about an identical dress, but just both of them in black to signify their bond as they all leave 6th form (or some other guff you can sell them). It just seems a shame for another girl (deliberately or not) to dictate what your DD can wear.

MrsPerfect12 · 14/02/2025 08:59

Both dresses are gorgeous and exactly what the girls will be wearing to prom. My daughter went a couple of years ago and similar looks material were worn. I love the bow but love the blue colour.

UpMyself · 14/02/2025 09:09

@LeatherJacketWedding , you are being pedantic, but the word petite has been hijacked by the fashion retail industry to mean 'short' or under 5'2" or 5'3", so the OP reads like 'She is blonde, 5’6 and short.'

I'm a fellow pedant.

A man described himself to me as petite and it gave me the ick.

She's not sixteen though. And it's her 'flesh'.

My dd is also in year thirteen. She's eighteen, doing her A levels, driving and working part time.

And I don't see why the OPs dd shouldn't wear a fancy dress unless her prom is in a fancy venue. There is no need to suck the joy out of everything.

And really, you can't have it all ways. If you think the OP's dd is a child and she's going to a party in the school hall then surely she can wear a party dress.

Well, I didn't like either dress much but assume OP's DD is super thin etc so they would work. Generally speaking, it is older women who want to show off lots of flesh - because they need to emphasise their remaining good points. Anything looks good on a slim teenage girl.
But why can't she wear the black dress she wanted to? Just because her friend has chosen that colour doesn't mean OP's DD can't.

Pushmepullu · 14/02/2025 10:02

I don’t like either dress but dislike the pink one less.

I guess it depends on how confident and self conscious she is. Both dresses are quite revealing and she probably wouldn’t be able to sit down in the blue one without revealing even more. Not sure she could dance in either of them but maybe people don’t dance at proms ?

denhaag · 14/02/2025 11:12

OP hasn't been back for a couple of days. I wonder if it's actually someone trying to promote the company.

wipeywipe · 14/02/2025 11:34

ProustianMadeleine · 12/02/2025 15:12

God, you lot are ridiculous and overly bitchy sometimes. It's just a teenage girl wanting to look like a supermodel for her prom. She probably wants to feel like she's going to a premiere, whoever made that stupid comment! 🙄
I like the pink OP. I hope she has an amazing time whichever dress she chooses.

I doubt she’ll feel like a film star in either of these.

OP - have you thought about renting a dress? My niece did this recently for her school prom and wore a dress worth several hundred pounds while just paying a small rental fee. She looked a million dollars.

Also not then stuck with a dress she is unlikely to wear again.

denhaag · 14/02/2025 12:18

I've seen young woman in not to dissimilar dresses at funerals.
Granted they were more sombre colours and w/o the massive bow - but def very figure hugging, low (front) cut and high (thigh) cut and shiny fabric.

These look entirely Prom appropriate.

Liv999 · 14/02/2025 13:04

I would go with the pink as I think it makes more of a statement, plus if she's blonde I think the pink will look lovely on her, I don't like the blue dress but that's because I don't like blue in general, nothing wrong with the style of it

Liv999 · 14/02/2025 13:12

I don't think any 18 year old would be seen dead in these

I have been reading the comments, but I don’t even know where to start to reply to all those comments! I am just taking it all in. Some of the comments are very judgemental, but there are some lovely suggestions that I am genuinely grateful.

Both are gorgeous and would look great on a blonde, but the pink steals it for me 😍

Other places for nice dresses are club l, lavish Alice, house of cb

Me too! Prefer the pink now

Also prom dress shopping currently…..of the 2 I prefer the pink.

My dd has a very restricted list of colours she’s ‘allowed’!! But we think we may have found the dress! Although it needs a lot of altering as it’s too big for her!

whatever you choose, I am sure she will looking amazing in it!

Stellajones · 14/02/2025 14:03

I am so overwhelmed at the comments, either critical or super nice! I couldn’t reply to every single comment, but I really appreciate your input! I understand the dresses might not to your taste, but this is what the teens wear nowadays. At the end of the day, it is her big day and I will let her choose whatever makes her feel comfortable. We might have to buy both dresses and decide. Thank you for all of your input!

Has she had a good look on ebay? There are a lot of dresses to choose from at under £30 including brands that have a reputation for cutting well. Also if you are buying something inexpensive it would be in budget to get it tailored to fit well. (Or to have a slit put into an unslit dress)

Londonmummy66 · 14/02/2025 14:20

Posted too soon but this dress has a decent structure/cut to it

Apologies OP, when you hadn't come back for a couple of days I considered that you might be someone just trying to promote that brand of clothing. I see that you are not.
I hope your DD finds the perfect dress.
I have a year 11 son, so he just needs a suit. The thing is, I bought him a new suit for a wedding in 2023, another for a funeral last year and he'll need another one for Prom. He keeps growing!

Back in the early 2000's me and my friend used to always wear similar outfits, not the exact same but very close- think baby pink cami's, white shoes, distressed ripped cropped jeans etc, lots of tacky diamanté.
Loads of flesh on show, tacky as hell. Don't regret it for a second!!
