Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

@Onlyonekenobe you wouldn’t allow an 18 or almost 18 year old to wear something? How does that work?

Out of those 2, I prefer the pink, but I also agree she should wear black if she wants to.

Every parent raises their children as they think best. In our family, nuclear and wider, we don't hold much store by 'legal' adulthood. It's an arbitrary age which wasn't decided with our children in mind. It cuts both ways: we wouldn't expect our "adult" children to pay rent or be financially independent or take responsibility for all their actions, because they're still too young to do those things. Equally, because they're still young they don't fully understand the consequences of their actions, so don't get the final answer on all things. In this instance, I wouldn't say "you're not wearing that". I'd probably express my opinion on the dresses and suggest alternatives for her to choose from, all of which I know would appeal to her.

wipeywipe · 12/02/2025 16:11

True, you can't have good taste without bad taste 😜

SushiWarrior · 12/02/2025 16:11

I really like the pink, I think she could make it Sabrina carpenter vibes (old Hollywood etc) which would be lovely!

You're asking the wrong group of people. The vast majority of people who are replying will be over 20 years older than your daughter so of course they won't love the dresses she chooses. You need Mumsnet for mother of the bride clothes, not prom!

that is a good point, we are not really the target audience for this?

Gardendiary · 12/02/2025 16:12

Im not sure she would be comfortable in either. The pink one she couldn’t wear a bra with and it would show up absolutely any mark because the material would be unforgiving. whilst Im not against the slit, there looks like there is no movement or flow at all in that blue dress. Are there any other options?

Mizztikle · 12/02/2025 16:13

Pink, I'd definitely go for the full glam personally but it depends on her personality. If she's more reserved go for the blue one.

zeibesaffron · 12/02/2025 16:16

I prefer the blue my DD had her year 13 prom last year they all had thigh high splits in those that wore dresses. They all looked body confident and fab!

Has she tried anything on? been to a dress shop etc so she know what colours/ styles suit her.

Rina66 · 12/02/2025 16:17

Pink, it's lovely and girly.
From experience, if possible, I'd take her to try some on, it's surprising how they change their minds once a certain style is on. It's also such a fun day out, dress shopping, lunch, then shoes, bag and accessories.

Whatthefuck3456 · 12/02/2025 16:17

Absolutely beautiful! Definitely the pink!

Pyjamatimenow · 12/02/2025 16:18

Something like this is very pretty. Would be nice on a blonde www.vinted.co.uk/items/5539753955-baby-pink-prom-dress

petproject · 12/02/2025 16:32

Y13 students at our school all seen to wear short dresses that are not formal, I think to differentiate from the Y11 full prom experience. It also is better for after prom if they go out clubbing. If she finds out what her friends are doing and goes for similar she can't go wrong.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 12/02/2025 16:39

I'd wear the 2nd and 3rd ones and I'm in my 40's, I doubt that's the look an 18yr old is going for 😬

@Stellajones I prefer the pink one, she just might need a gentle spray-tan if she's particularly pale to make the colour pop.

I hope your daughter finds something she loves.

Jiggedy · 12/02/2025 16:46

I think it's madness to choose another colour dress from the colour she wants just because someone else is wearing that colour.

GutsyGertrude · 12/02/2025 16:52

Mumsnet isn't the right audience I don't think

Honestly, I think the ones in your op are too revealing for my taste, but I am 41 and not going to prom

worcesterpear · 12/02/2025 16:57

I like the blue one best (hate the pink one, especially for a prom for an 18 year old) but I agree with other posters that there is no reason she couldn't wear a black dress too. I thought most sixth form girls wore short black dresses from normal shops for their prom, and the long gown types were mainly worn at year 11 proms.

Namechanger385u4p · 12/02/2025 17:03

I know her friend is wearing black but the pink dress in black is nice. The other colours show up the weird cut on the belly/cheap material. I like the bow.

The blue looks cheap but i that's the look for 18 yos so it will be fine. I had a really tacky white dress at this age and loved it lol

balzamico · 12/02/2025 17:06

At DD's prom there was a lot of black dresses, its a classic look after all, the blue one would be appropriate but I think the bow on the pink is way over the top, and likely to be ridiculed

Jiggedy · 12/02/2025 17:06

I agree that if she wears black it's going to look like more expensive dress. The pink does not even look good on the model on their own website so in real life it's got no chance.

I think that is very pretty - but honestly from what I've seen of prom pic at DC school first two would fit in as well - despite the long slit in blue one many have those.

I think blue look better than pink with bow - but much will depend on how it fits your DD OP.

If she really wants black I wouldn't let her friend wearing that put her off either.

Ignore the bitchy comments from the (fat, middle-aged) women on here OP. Just jealous that none of us have bodies like that anymore!

Can fat, middle aged people not have style? or is it that there opinion is worth less?

I think if you have style you can see what works on an 18 yr old or a 60 yr old regardless if it's not something you would wear...

mitogoshigg · 12/02/2025 17:29

Honestly, neither. They are quite expensive considering they look so flimsy. Look at Quiz where she can try them on.

If she's set on online, my dd bought from jjs house last year and it punched well over its price point, she took advantage of their shortening service too
