Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Both are gorgeous and would look great on a blonde, but the pink steals it for me 😍

Other places for nice dresses are club l, lavish Alice, house of cb

Fabulousfeb · 12/02/2025 21:51

Loads of girls will be wearing black why can't she choose black if she wants it

Eyerollexpert · 12/02/2025 21:56

The big bow, how would it facilitate sitting down if they are having a meal? All girls that age will look stunning, I hope she has a great time 🙂

Usernamechangeforthis12 · 12/02/2025 22:07

Also prom dress shopping currently…..of the 2 I prefer the pink.

My dd has a very restricted list of colours she’s ‘allowed’!! But we think we may have found the dress! Although it needs a lot of altering as it’s too big for her!

PrimalLass · 12/02/2025 22:07

The blue one.

They all wear dresses like that so ignore those steering you towards something no teenage girl would want.

My daughter got a dress from Windsor and the quality was pretty good for the price.

Yellowrosessmellpetaly · 12/02/2025 22:13

Both very flimsy and not ball esque which I suspect is the thing nowadays but..

How about a velvet material with a bit less flesh on show.

This type of thing, I like the style anyway.

I'd go for the blue but get it altered so the slit is less high. I'm speaking from experience she won't want to be worrying her bits are on show.

Given the state of girls nowadays who display their bare bottoms to all in sundry in G sting bikinis I doubt many of them would mind their 'bits' on show. I agree with you about the blue dress. It could do with a more modest split. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it could be altered as it's designed to split to the crotch so not enough material. I prefer the pink one for a young girl but there are far nicer dresses out there.

PheasantPluckers · 12/02/2025 23:11

Sorry, I agree that the fabrics look a bit cheap and as a result, cheapen the look of the outfits, although the style of the dresses are fine, I think.

Most of the suggestions though are awful! So middle aged (and I am middle aged) and not prom at all.

Have you had a look at JJ's house? I don't know about the quality. www.jjshouse.com/sheath-column-halter-floor-length-stretch-satin-prom-dresses-with-bow-018268661-g268661?_gl=1%2A7uzas2%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_gs%2AMQ..&gclid=CjwKCAiAqrG9BhAVEiwAaPu5zj3p3cREfb7pfcUbRQfXoaBepAKLjB075YMB5iv5bcKiFN5S6zAYaRoCLh0QAvD_BwE&pos=nav-prom-prom-dresses-all-prom-dresses#/

Those satin look dresses are so unforgiving even on the skinniest of young girls when their hip bones protrude. There are so many lovely dresses & not all designed for older women. Prom doesn't necessitate being half naked.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 12/02/2025 23:20

Sorry OP I think both are a bit tacky. But I'm not an 18yo girl and even when I was I was far more comfortable stomping around in DMs and ripped jeans than gowns. I love the colour of the blue one but the slit is too high. And the bow on the other is just hideous.

Tacky is the most appropriate description of this type of dress.

They look more like what some celebrities would wear to film premiere, and a bit too revealing, but then I am old!

This. She's presumably 16ish. There's no way a teenager of mine would go out in either of those dresses.

When I was 18 I would be worrying if my bits weren’t on show.

HundredPercentUnsure · 12/02/2025 23:56

I'm so not looking forward to my children at this age iro parenting.

These dresses are awful and tacky. Better options are out there!

Mumwithbaggage · 13/02/2025 00:18

It's not the bits on show particularly, they both just look very poor quality.

What kind of school is it? That look would not go down at all well at the (state) school my girls went to. DD(child 4) actually wore the multiway dress her sister wore 8 years before for her Y13 prom. She then wore it again for an Oxbridge Ball this summer aged 20.

I'd be on Vinted for something more stylish and better quality. And yes, wear black if you like. Doesn't matter what your friend is wearing.

Ellaelle · 13/02/2025 00:42

ProustianMadeleine · 12/02/2025 15:12

God, you lot are ridiculous and overly bitchy sometimes. It's just a teenage girl wanting to look like a supermodel for her prom. She probably wants to feel like she's going to a premiere, whoever made that stupid comment! 🙄
I like the pink OP. I hope she has an amazing time whichever dress she chooses.

Exactly everything you said!

AnomieNo2 · 13/02/2025 01:10

If you go with the first one, do you have someone to adjust it? It’s important that it fits well across the back so that it doesn’t “gap” and look baggy.

The models in both pictures are also 5’ 6”

I’m blonde and think the blue won’t date as quickly

Doggymummar · 13/02/2025 09:41

They are cheap for a reason, but, I don't have a dog in this fight. I would get something from a good store like Coast, Monsoon etc or rent a quality dress from a local hire shop. Sorry they look like Shein cheap satin numbers in the photos so what will they look like in reality
