Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I agree with Doggymummar.
The photos look photoshopped, and the dresses look cheap and trashy.
Go to an actual shop where the dresses can be tried on.

Get her something that she can wear again, or look for pre-loved or one that you can sell or donate after the prom.

Sorry, I agree that the fabrics look a bit cheap and as a result, cheapen the look of the outfits, although the style of the dresses are fine, I think.

Most of the suggestions though are awful! So middle aged (and I am middle aged) and not prom at all.

Have you had a look at JJ's house? I don't know about the quality. www.jjshouse.com/sheath-column-halter-floor-length-stretch-satin-prom-dresses-with-bow-018268661-g268661?_gl=1%2A7uzas2%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_gs%2AMQ..&gclid=CjwKCAiAqrG9BhAVEiwAaPu5zj3p3cREfb7pfcUbRQfXoaBepAKLjB075YMB5iv5bcKiFN5S6zAYaRoCLh0QAvD_BwE&pos=nav-prom-prom-dresses-all-prom-dresses#/

Not much better, by the look of it!

Agree,it's awful & really unflattering.

I don't understand why there are posters who say giving an honest opinion about a dress such as tacky or trashy is being bitchy when the dresses so obviously suit the description. I'm sure every poster would like the OPs daughter to look absolutely beautiful for her prom which is why they are giving honest opinions about the tacky & cheap looking suggestions so far with a few exceptions.

I'm sorry OP if what has been posted is not what you wanted to see. At the end of the day it's up to your daughter what she chooses to wear but at least you've had genuine opinions.

MissM72 · 13/02/2025 12:03

Both dresses are exactly what young girls are wearing to proms these days. My daughters was similar to the blue one but in black. We got the split altered as one false move on the dance floor could have been embarrassing!

Sprinkly · 13/02/2025 12:09

Blue!

Why?

They are both lovely and both appropriate in this day and age. My daughter's prom was full of these dresses and she also wore one similar to the first one.

It's the wrong forum but lay off the nasty comments about fat, middle aged women being jealous.

I think both dresses are awful. Even when I was under 25 and what is now a size 4 and was then a 10 I thought dresses like that were horrible.

Of the 2 the pink is slightly less awful but I'm not sure what the point of asking here is. I'm sure OP's daughter couldn't care less what anyone here thinks.

What's awful about them?

UpMyself · 13/02/2025 12:58

@cleowasmycat , the dresses look flimsy, synthetic and like the images have been photoshopped. The site gives no information like fabric, whether theyre lined, length, care instructions, etc about the dresses

Those are better - particularly the navy dress.

Edited

Are you joking? This is a teenager we are talking about, not a divorcee on a cruise!

unlikelywitch · 13/02/2025 13:55

The pink one is very Sabrina Carpenter and I love a statement bow. I also love the “cheap and nasty” frothing from the usual suspects 😝.

The navy quiz dress is something a middle aged civil servant would wear on her Christmas night out.

Grammarnut · 13/02/2025 14:24

Too revealing for a 16-year-old who doesn't need to show this much flesh. And not necessarily appropriate. What sort of prom is it. A disco in the school hall is a bit different from a sit down meal followed by dancing.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/02/2025 14:57

I have a year 12 dd. The blue one would suit blondes better. The pink one would wash a lot of blondes out and a lot of fake tan would likely be required. It does obviously depend on her skin tone.

Anything else apart from something from club London suggested in this thread is so wrong for this age group. Idk why people are even suggesting them. The 2 net, frou numbers are prom dresses for 16 year olds. 18 year olds wear something a little more ‘sophisticated’ but still in line with the fact they are teenagers.

LostMyLanyard · 13/02/2025 15:22

The pink one is stunning! The blue is nice but I feel that it's too mature for a teenage prom. Whilst the pink does show the back off, it feels much less mature...the slit on the blue dress is almost to the hip bone. Leave that sort of thing to celebrities.

Fraaances · 13/02/2025 15:43

I can’t believe everyone being so nasty about the dress styles. This was what most young ladies wore to my DD’s prom last year too.

SpotlessLeopard · 13/02/2025 15:45

Ignore some of these comments, these are the kinds of dresses they wear to prom. I prefer the blue. I think she should wear black if she wants though.

ginnybag · 13/02/2025 15:52

Both those dresses are bang on style for the age range, but you could find very similar from Shein for a third the price.

(Literally - I've seen both dresses on the 15 yo's in my drama club at awards nights in the last 6 months...)

If it's on trend at the mo, it's going to be backless, tight, stretchy and slit - and why the hell not? May as well take advantage of being young, fit and firm enough to do it while they've got it.

If she's a true enough blonde, the blue will look amazing

sofio · 13/02/2025 16:29

lovely dresses! Pretty tropical for prom. I've got three daughters and this was standard attire at their prom.
Clicked on the link with the pink dress and one of the models is my friends daughter, she's doing well and seems to be everywhere at the moment!

sofio · 13/02/2025 16:35

typical, not tropical!

She's not sixteen though. And it's her 'flesh'.

My dd is also in year thirteen. She's eighteen, doing her A levels, driving and working part time.

And I don't see why the OPs dd shouldn't wear a fancy dress unless her prom is in a fancy venue. There is no need to suck the joy out of everything.

And really, you can't have it all ways. If you think the OP's dd is a child and she's going to a party in the school hall then surely she can wear a party dress.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 13/02/2025 18:15

I love the pink one!!!

I’d pair it with strappy open toed shoes in white or gold.

And hair like this.

Pink

Nothitrockbottomyet · 13/02/2025 22:03

Gosh those dresses are trashy.

I really don't understand the trend in women's fashion just to look as cheap and flashy as possible.

Showing as much flesh as possible has taken the place of actually finding clothes that flatter and enhance the wearers appearance.
