Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

They both look cheap and nasty.

I think your comment is cheap and nasty.

lemoncrisp · 12/02/2025 15:41

Hmm ...don't like either I'm sorry. Too revealing and not pretty. But I'm old so probably not the right person to ask.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 12/02/2025 15:46

My advice would be sit and watch Taylor Swift’s Eras tour with her on Disney plus and then take inspiration from the gorgeous and glamorous gowns Taylor wears.

CurbsideProphet · 12/02/2025 15:47

With a leg slit that high she would need to stand still in her pose all night to avoid flashing her crotch. The pink looks very "oh everyone look at my bum". Maybe having so much flesh on show is just the norm for prom nowadays. I'm sure there must be more elegant dresses out there?

Then she should wear black like she wanted to. Who cares what her mate is wearing?

Those dresses look very poor quality though.

HeyMuggie · 12/02/2025 15:50

Could you not hire one cheaper than this? She's hardly going to wear it again is she?

ChannelFiveDrama · 12/02/2025 15:51

I think that you're probably asking in the wrong place. Let your daughter and her friends make this decision. The dresses are exactly what are worn at prom these days I prefer the pink of the two. It's quite Sabrina Carpenter.

wipeywipe · 12/02/2025 15:54

They look more like what some celebrities would wear to film premiere,

D-list celebs!

The pink is marginally better

wipeywipe · 12/02/2025 15:55

the pink isn't a nice colour but the split is too high on the blue.

I wore a French Connection dress to my prom.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 12/02/2025 15:57

Not a fan of the Quiz ones either, bit boring.

Quite like this, bit more elegant

The first one is stunning! The pink one is vile.

pinkyredrose · 12/02/2025 16:01

Why does her best friend wearing black mean that she can't wear black?🤔

NerrSnerr · 12/02/2025 16:03

You're asking the wrong group of people. The vast majority of people who are replying will be over 20 years older than your daughter so of course they won't love the dresses she chooses. You need Mumsnet for mother of the bride clothes, not prom!

ShaunaSadeki · 12/02/2025 16:04

@Onlyonekenobe you wouldn’t allow an 18 or almost 18 year old to wear something? How does that work?

Out of those 2, I prefer the pink, but I also agree she should wear black if she wants to.

AsFunAsEnglishWeather · 12/02/2025 15:12

They are both exactly what teens wear to prom. Don't let her wear black - it's boring. I dislike the blue as it's cut weirdly and pulls open to show too much leg - think the Angelina Jolie leg meme. The pink is much better.

The OP shouldn't 'let' her wear black because a stranger on the internet thinks it's boring.

She should honestly go with what she loves.

notnorman · 12/02/2025 16:06

I love both but the blue might suit her more if she's a spring colouring - blue eyes and blond hair

ChannelFiveDrama · 12/02/2025 16:06

They tend not to wear the same colour as friends. You get shades of pinks and blues etc but black is a bit less varied so I can see why she's looking for something else.

Is one of those Quiz dresses that's been suggested long sleeves? For a summer prom for a 16 year old? I doubt that's the vibe she's after.

ChannelFiveDrama · 12/02/2025 16:07

Apologies she's 17/18 I see not 16. Even more reason why it's ok for her to wear something a little more revealing if that's what she wants.

wipeywipe · 12/02/2025 16:09

@NerrSnerr I see the prom at my local school, lots of the girls have nice dresses. But it's inner London so different style
I guess.

snowflakelake · 12/02/2025 16:09

I like the pink one more, it is giving Sabrina Carpenter vibes.
But the look will date quickly I suspect, if that matters for the photos.

Pyjamatimenow · 12/02/2025 16:10

Another one saying neither. Don’t like the split on the blue or the top part of the pink. The others you posted look a bit old for her particularly the long sleeved navy one

Emptyflames · 12/02/2025 16:10

HippyKayYay · 12/02/2025 15:07

I don’t love either of them, but I really dislike the pink bow one! But I’m not a 18-yr-old girl. Surely your DD is better off asking her friends/ peers rather than a bunch of (probably) middle-aged women on MN

Also why can’t she wear black too? They’ll likely be loads of them in black frocks (for good reason) - it’s not like 2 people turning up in exactly the same shade of eg lemon yellow

Also the name of the pink one "Problematic Princess" christ! thats awful

Nice is subjective though. If the OP's daughter thinks the ones linked are nice then that's what she should go with.
