Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well, I didn't like either dress much but assume OP's DD is super thin etc so they would work. Generally speaking, it is older women who want to show off lots of flesh - because they need to emphasise their remaining good points. Anything looks good on a slim teenage girl.
But why can't she wear the black dress she wanted to? Just because her friend has chosen that colour doesn't mean OP's DD can't.

Their remaining good points???

That’s awful to write about women.

Why is liking dresses that have better material & have a degree of class rather than looking cheap in all sense of the word in any way misogynistic? Admittedly it's a matter of taste but both opinions are relevant. Interestingly 51% like neither dress & I'm sure those people are as fashionable & trendy as the rest but with more decorum.Hopefully young girls today will eventually realise they can be beautiful & sexy without going over the top. I blame the designers who know the less cheap material used the cheaper the outfit is to make & they can still charge so much more in the name of fashion. As far as high end designers who do the same, well that speaks for itself.

Rude

What on earth is rude about identifying that a couple of dresses are made of flimsy cheap material?

Why don’t you try a smaller independent shop? One near me buys in loads of prom dresses, shoes and bags, and they have such a huge range in so many colours.

I voted Neither but if you made me choose between the two I’d go for the pink. However, I really think there are better dresses out there.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/02/2025 20:28

To me the pink one is too fussy. I much prefer the blue one, but IMO you’d need to be fairly tall.

JustFeedMeCake · 15/02/2025 08:42

Neither, sorry. There are much nicer dresses out there. These do look very poorly made.

Their remaining good points???

Well, I look at myself and tick off my few remaining good points - legs and ankles, I think, so I wear black matt tights and slight heels. But I have passed three score years and ten.
Not meaning to be unkind or write awful things about women, just making the point that young women do not need to display so much. Aware totally how our society judges older women - mainly we are invisible.
Might report myself.

No worries! They do grow so fast hence not worth buying anything expensive.

We have been to a few prom shops. The price they have charging at the shop is out of our budget. A simple and plain satin gown costs nearly £300 let alone the embellished ones with some detailing. I have seen some pictures taken from previous proms and I think these two gowns are in line with the dress code nowadays. After speaking to a MUA who has a lot of clients already booked her for prom, she also confirms the trend has changed in the last ten years. It’s slinky rather than A-line tulle shape.
