Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Are people getting so ridiculously defensive because they think people are commenting on a girl they have never seen rather than on some dresses? What strange reading comprehension.

I’m in Ireland and Dd16 has her TY ball next month. Your dresses are exactly the type of dress they all wear. Some going for a complete princess look or fishtail/mermaid style but my dd showed me lots like yours. We were just saying yesterday how much we like the bow on the back style.
Have you looked on Oh Hello or Club L?
My dd got hers from second hand from Depop. It’s a Dani’s closet dress.

Really unpleasant I'm afraid, in the worst way.

UpMyself · 12/02/2025 17:39

Nobody will look like a supermodel in those dresses @ProustianMadeleine

Goodluckanddontfitup · 12/02/2025 17:45

lol as soon as I read this I knew you would get a slurry or comments slagging off the dresses. Very predictable MN. Both dresses are perfectly in keeping with what teens are wearing for proms at the moment. I personally favour the blue

AelinAG · 12/02/2025 17:49

Think pink. As a blonde she’ll look lovely. If there was ever a time to wear something like that, it’s at prom as an 18 year old. Ignore all the negative cows on here.

Some decent options on here

OP ignore the bitchy comments, these are both perfectly normal styles of prom dresses and not especially revealing for a Year 13.

The pink one looks more special, oversized bows are on trend and agree with pp about the Hollywood/ Sabrina Carpenter vibe. The blue one is nice but a bit more ‘generic’. I’ve seen a lot of dresses very similar to it at proms in the last few years.

SittingNextToIt · 12/02/2025 18:06

I would not want my child wearing either of those. As the mother of a DS and a DD I am regularly horrified at the expectation (as seen in society/media/shops) that DD needs to reveal more of her skin than DS to "dress fancy" or even just swim/wear shorts.

Thornybush · 12/02/2025 18:09

I love the pink one , perfect for a prom 💗 All these commenters are obviously out of touch with what teenage girls like

Trainr · 12/02/2025 18:10

Is the OP not coming back? Funny that!

I’m not sure at that age I wouldn’t be wanting the opinion of my mother, let alone a bunch of random women on Mumsnet - we’re not the target audience.

It’s a bit like me posting some knitting patterns for critique in a Lad’s Mag!

It's the wrong forum but lay off the nasty comments about fat, middle aged women being jealous.

I think both dresses are awful. Even when I was under 25 and what is now a size 4 and was then a 10 I thought dresses like that were horrible.

Of the 2 the pink is slightly less awful but I'm not sure what the point of asking here is. I'm sure OP's daughter couldn't care less what anyone here thinks.

mjdle · 12/02/2025 18:13

What's her skin tone op? I think blue would look better with darker, olive skin tone or tan and pink would suit all. Both lovely and she'll look amazing. Don't listen to all the negative posts, if she likes it and feels confident in either that's all that counts xx

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 12/02/2025 18:18

I much prefer the blue (and judging by my DD/her friend’s prom dresses it is more on trend). The pink is a bit twee and cheap looking, especially with the big bow.

Are there no dress shops near you where she could try some on and get a better idea of what she likes/what suits her best? I’ve seen and heard of some absolute disasters from online prom dress shopping!

It’s the opposite way round. Light pink washes pale skin tones out.

Cookiesandcandies · 12/02/2025 18:31

They both give me v similar vibes - of a teen/young adult who hasn't found their own style yet (which is fine). Which colour does she like best and pick that one.

housemaus · 12/02/2025 18:35

The blue for me!

‘Lay off the nasty comments’ but then make a nasty comment about the choice of dresses?

Garlicworth · 12/02/2025 18:53

I don't know if it's flashy enough for the purpose, but that bottle green dress is a winner! Can't believe the price - it looks expensive on the video 😍

I'm afraid I don't like either of the OP choices. The fabric looks really cheap and the blue one's like a (cheap) bumsex advertisement.

When you want a black, dress-up dress but not black, I'd look to red or gold for instant wow factor.

Pyjamatimenow · 12/02/2025 18:58

I get that a lot of young girls are wearing these types of dresses but they’re the same girls that are going out in cycling shorts and crop tops when they’re not going to the gym. Satin, tight dresses with massive splits up them do look cheap on almost everyone in harsh daylight. Satin is very unforgiving. If my dd wanted one and had her heart set on it I’d buy it but not before I tried to get her to try on something prettier and classier that still showed off her figure

MrsCrabOrange · 12/02/2025 19:05

The navy quiz dress with sleeves is awful for an 18 year old. It would be horribly ageing.
