Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Asos has stacks of 'occasion' dresses, did DD look there?

I think they are both nice, prefer the pink. Don't get why she can't wear black though?!

I get that a lot of young girls are wearing these types of dresses but they’re the same girls that are going out in cycling shorts and crop tops when they’re not going to the gym. Satin, tight dresses with massive splits up them do look cheap on almost everyone in harsh daylight. Satin is very unforgiving. If my dd wanted one and had her heart set on it I’d buy it but not before I tried to get her to try on something prettier and classier that still showed off her figure

Does it really matter if they look unforgiving and cheap? (in your opinion) These are young girls going to prom not celebrities at an awards show.

It’s the opposite way round. Light pink washes pale skin tones out.

Gosh I remember being young and beautiful and everything I tried on looked great ..well almost everything. I got the shock of my life when I tried on a blush pink dress and it completely washed me out. Did nothing at all for me. Told dm and she agreed that 'definite' colours suited me much better. And I wasn't even that pale.

Pyjamatimenow · 12/02/2025 19:40

@Thornybush yes it would matter to me. I wouldn’t want to spend hundreds of pounds on an evening for my daughter just for them to not look nice ( imo). I’d try and steer dd to better dresses especially if I’m paying which I undoubtedly would be.

baddayformeredith · 12/02/2025 19:45

My daughter had a dress in the same blue in the link, she is also blonde and petite and looked amazing. It really suited her.
If your daughter prefers black, then go for a black dress, it doesn't matter if her friend has the same colour as long as it's a different dress.

baddayformeredith · 12/02/2025 19:46

Also meant to say that these dresses are very much what the girls wore to prom. What does your DD think?

I think that's a bit harsh and materialistic but each to their own. If my dd had her heart set on a dress that she loved I would absolutely buy it for her. If the dress she loved made her radiate with happiness that's all that matters. You can't control every part of their lives.

Luluco · 12/02/2025 19:57

Both are lovely but I prefer the pink one.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 12/02/2025 19:59

I was going to agree with you , despite thinking those dresses are awful, but was puzzled by the "hundreds of pounds" comment. I hadn't looked at the prices - I had assumed they were much, much cheaper.

That was replying to Thornybush

letsfaceitwhoisnt · 12/02/2025 20:13

I'm really sorry but I think they both look really cheap. The pink one would be nice in another material maybe but the blue one is just not good.

JJWT · 12/02/2025 20:24

I would not have bought anything like these for any of my 3 20+y/o daughters at that age. They are dreadful and very chavvy.

Screamingabdabz · 12/02/2025 20:25

Some of the alternatives suggested here are hideous! Especially those Quiz ones… get thee to a nunnery. Jeez no teenager is wearing lumpy flowers or full length sleeves to a prom 😂

Op both of those dresses are perfectly fine but a bit generic and cheapy looking. Most of the girls at my dd’s proms (inner city diverse comp) wore something quite blingy and even the lads went all out - powder blue suits. Dickie bows etc.

Don’t, as some pp suggested, look at what Taylor Swift wore, she is a woman in her 30s fgs. Check out the school website or local paper and see if there are photos from last year. See what the general vibe was and check out vinted and eBay - some girls sell expensive dresses and they’ve only worn them for a few hours.

Good luck!

Toooldtorave · 12/02/2025 20:38

Pinkpillow7 · 12/02/2025 15:11

I don’t want to be prudish but that blue one is soo revealing, in a tacky sort of way. That leg slit couldn’t be any higher. Out of those two I would go for the pink one for that reason. I agree with a PP that they both look cheap though (and they’re not!) I think your dd can do better

I feel mean saying it but agree with this. That being said the blue one seems to be a common theme for proms - style wise anyway.

I reckon if you ordered it it would arrive and the material would feel very thin and flimsy.

There must be something a bit more ‘classic’ - I’m thinking more Audrey Hepburn style - and I think if she fancies a back dress then go for it.

Kist a thought but are there any bridal stores with nice bridesmaid type dresses reduced, even if they need to be altered?

Some decent options on here

Yep agreed - these are all lovely.

NaiceEagle · 12/02/2025 21:11

It's no help to you (or your daughter), but I am so relieved that my sociable daughter both at year 13 and end of uni decided she couldn't be bothered with the prom. She said it all costs a fortune (she worked as well at a shopping centre and paid for her own driving lessons) , some girls were fussing about who sits with who etc and I think she felt liberated not going. It didn't affect her relationships with friends at all.
I hope your daughter enjoys the shopping and planning and the evening itself.

Sunnyswfl · 12/02/2025 21:11

Both gowns are gorgeous and I am sure your daughter will look beautiful in whichever one that she picks!

DressOrSkirt · 12/02/2025 21:13

Bignanna · 12/02/2025 15:00

They look more like what some celebrities would wear to film premiere, and a bit too revealing, but then I am old!

Isn't that the point, to look like a celebrity?
I prefer the pink one because I love the bow. But they are both nice, and there's no reason she can't get a black one if that's what she wants!

They're quite overdone for a Y13 prom. The extra amazing dresses are for the Y11 and then Y13 dresses tend to be more clubby/shorter dresses.

It's pathetic that you ascribe not liking those dresses to being jealous. I don't like and never have liked that style.

Those are better - particularly the navy dress.
