It is actually a dress (you may have seen me debating it at W/E). Comes just about to knees.

Worn over black wide legged trousers

how to dress a pear shape

no to wide leg trousers apparently

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 19:48

you know, if what you say about your sizes is true, you might just have to bite the bullet and get your trousers taken in. not pointy, though, god knows, just straightened down the leg a bit.
when i worked in offices i always had to get the hips, arse and legs taken in by a seamstress (tended to cost about £12) because i'm an apple shape so things that fit my waist often don't fit the rest of me.

Tutter · 24/04/2008 19:50

oh, me too aitch, fellow apple

if i were to buy something to fit my waist it'd be a 14 at least

for my hips/thighs it'd be a 10

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 19:51

the dress is a bit drab (montone alwyas is)

take it back and get a top to wear with the trousers

dont get black and white tho! get a colour

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 19:52

yep, i'm a 14/16 in normal trews and a 10/12 in maternity ones. really i should just wear the maternity ones all the time, they're perfect for me...

don't think i haven't seriously considered it, btw.

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 19:53

DONT WEAR THE DRESS AT ALL

get a top for the trousers

Tutter · 24/04/2008 19:53

i know what you mean

when pg, despite being huge, i always feel slimmer -- because my tummy is disguised by baby

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 19:56

i remember your photos, your bump was babylicious. i too give good bump, i must say. nice and neat, but rounded. ooooh, i really missed mine when i had dd. it was so flattering on me, lol. and i lost weight. if only i hadn't comfort ate through my non-bfing i'd have been all leggy and lovely. as it was... bring on the cake.

TheFallenMadonna · 24/04/2008 19:57

I think it's too long on you. As a top of course, not as a dress. I'm fairly hippy and I wear long tunics over trousers a lot, but only to mid thigh. I tend to wear them over bootcut jeans, which are quite hugging down to the flarey bit.

IMO you need more leg to balance out the proportions.

Tutter · 24/04/2008 19:59

i was pg when we moved here

i think people expected me to be a waif after i'd given birth. as it was one of them asked when the baby was due, 4 weeks postpartum

Walnutshell · 24/04/2008 19:59

Do you wear jeans at all SMS? If so, put some on with the dress and take another photo - doesn't matter if the wrong colour, just to see the difference in shape.

Surprised you are 18, but despite your 18/16/14 sizing thing, you do look in proportion which can only be a good thing.

Put your head in the next shot then we can really judge advise you!

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 19:59

sms, i hope you aren't feeling down about this, because in truth the top part is pretty darned flattering to your neck, breasts and shoulders so you're on the right track imo. i agree with naily, though, if you're a white lass, monochrome spooks you out a bit, so better in colour.

what do you normally dress in that makes you feel swingy and fabulous? and do you know a lady who can take in your trousers for you?

Tutter · 24/04/2008 19:59

(sorry for hijack)

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:00

also true about the length of dress, it is a bit long to crack that look.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:02

don't apologise tutter, as a pear-shape sms knows that we have to blether more because we have less time, we're going to die of cardiac disease by the time we're 60...

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:03

i think wide leg trousers are great for any shape, actually,

different shapes would buy different tops to go with wide leg trousers

tall skinny rakes would look great with a dress over wide leg trews, you are not a rake, you have a shape, go for a top that shows that shape, like a v neck wrap top or something. or a tailored shirt

also, i know im repeating, but black and white flatters no one

ahundredtimes · 24/04/2008 20:03

Right, excellent collar bones Missus, well done.

Now that is a dress not a top isn't it? I'm not sure it is the sort of dress that would be best for you to wear with straight jeans.

But - I do think you should wear it out with a pair of black tights and find some good shoes with a heel. Like Mary Janes and see if you are pleasantly surprised by the shape they give your legs? It might work you know.

Then think again, about a long top/dress that you might wear over straight jeans. And get another tighter top to go with nice slouchy black trousers.

That's quite a lot of shopping for you.

Tutter · 24/04/2008 20:05

lol (in a slightly nervous way) aitch

did i mention i have lost 5lbs in 10 days [smug]

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:05

no, there is not a pair of wide leg trews in the land that suits me, naily. and i've had ones by Margaret Howell, queen of wide tailoring. my legs are too short and waist too wide. i look like a brick.

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:06

really? how? did you cut out jaffa cakes? that would help me a lot, i think.

Walnutshell · 24/04/2008 20:06

Re the colour - I don't mind it actually but you could wear a coloured vest top underneath. I really like a colour with black and white, can look effective. Maybe a muted goldy yellow (am thinking about a vest top I have bought from New Look) or any colour that is particularly good on you.

Never come across this site before, but this is the sort of look I was thinking about There are a couple of other nice examples too - click on jeans.

Agree with whoever said flattering to your top half and hope you don't come back after poo/nits and feel despondent!

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:06

even hipster ones, aitch? i am short of leg too

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:07

lol at the idea of hipsters... my tum runneth over.

Walnutshell · 24/04/2008 20:07

oh yes, naily, fitted shirt and wide legs. nice
