It is actually a dress (you may have seen me debating it at W/E). Comes just about to knees.

Worn over black wide legged trousers

(I thought pear shapes were healthier, isn't it apples that have to worry?)

brimfull · 24/04/2008 20:09

find a top that stops just below the hip

doesn't make you look swamped and as if you're hiding something

maybe a long wrap type top that shows of your fab top half

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:10

same here aitch

i think

the trews
a black fitted shirt
a very bright scarf - like red or green - even patterned but not mad multicoloured - primary colours good in this intstance - and even coloured shoes - block heels - and a bag - and a big bangle

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:10

precisely why me and tutter, with our leetle pommes tummes, must gab on while the rest of you have decades to chat. we're under doctor's orders to hijack.

tell me more about your knick-knacks, please.

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:12

i tried hold em in pants once
my spare tyre just mpved up a few inches

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:12

fuck it, though, naily, if she's going to do that she should just go the whole hog and get a lovely swingy patterned skirt and accessorise madly. (or perhaps i know nothing about dressing pears?)

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:13

topshop ahve a FAB fitted black shirt - i bought one at the weekend

thick stretchy cotton with cap sleeves

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:13

Tutter · 24/04/2008 20:15

nailpolish · 24/04/2008 20:20

gok would be proud

shoes

nice too

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 20:38

it's a shame, but those all in one things kill me to wear cos i've got a long body, so they never do anything for my tits. i need one with a separate bra.

SlightlyMadSweet · 24/04/2008 21:53

Wooooow a bit of a roller coaster thread here....but I have to see Aitch you were spot on at 19:59 and picked me up a bit .

Just to give some history to my choices:

Don't ever go 'out' (well not often) so have no wardrobe for such events. And that includes accesories.

HOwever, am going for a meal tomorrow and have another couple in teh calendar so thought I would invest.

Trousers....I have tried and failed to find trousers to fit my figure. If anyone can tell me where from I would be greatful. Currently shopping mostly in BHS/Tesco/browse DP/browse Next.

I bought a black top for tomorrow (a chiffony vest under but short top). MN told me black on black was a no no unless coloured accessories...have no accessories to speak of (let alone coloured).
Saw what I thought was a tunic from a distance in Tesco. Fell in love (I never fall in love with clothes - I hate shopping for clothes). Realised it was a dress. Ummed and arrred. MN said "maybe" so I bought it, put it on, took a pic, an asked MN.

So here we are.
Starts reasonably positive, alternative trousers/tights suggested. Then maybe you are saying 'top' is wrong. Now I am lost.

Aitch _ I have a sewing machine but no experience of altering clothes.
LittleLamb - would love someone to tak eme shopping and tell me what to buy
Walnutshell - just tried my jeans and it didn't even warrant a photo. My jeans have a gapey waist and I have to wear a belt and the belt is v v visible under dress. I loo as if I have a strange og tum.

Lengthwise I may just get away with tights if someone can point me in the direction of tights which are the equivalent of Spanx down to the feet. I have heals (well 1 1/2"), but not sure they go with the dress.

So I think I have a choice for tomorrow (can look for better trousers for future).

  1. Go with photo above and accept it is not ideal but will be sitting at restaurant table for most of evening so no-one will see
  2. Go with tights, feel v self conscious but accept it is not ideal but will be sitting at restaurant table for most of eveing so no-one will see
  3. Go with black top and black trousers and be v boring
  4. Throw verything away, go upstairs and cry cos I am crap at this, and go out in teh emporers new clothes.

get yourself an esbelt slimming vest aitch. Tis fabby!
sms. Reckon you can find something more flattering although agree neckline works well.
No clues though re shape as I am top heavy no hipper weird shape.

Piffle · 24/04/2008 22:06

although pricey, monsoon offer good choices for 14-16 some fab tops which would dress up trousers.
find trousers that fit waist and arse well.
good local seamstress can sort the rest for pennies. Totally worth it.

SlightlyMadSweet · 24/04/2008 22:12

Thats another point.

I rarely spend much on clothes. Don't see the point when I don't go anywhere to where nice clothes.

OP posts:
Heated · 24/04/2008 22:19

If you like the tunic-style this more flattering?

here

as it gives you a waist, is bolder in colour and has a flare in the trousers.

Piffle · 24/04/2008 22:19

neither me sms but one classy top can see you through yrs! I got one h+m top from 2nd hand sale and have had it 4 yrs!

AitchTwoOhelicopterfraek · 24/04/2008 22:22

so true about the seamstress, piff, sms find someone IMMEDIATELY. phone a swanky shop in the town and find out who they use, it'll no doubt be some mad old biddy in a back room somewhere with a pincushion on her wrist. completely worth it.

re tomorrow night, go with what you've got, the top half is v flattering and like you say that's what'll be visible to dh. for the future, get your trews taken in and get the lovely bespectacled lady to take a few inches off your frock too, so that it's a tunic. then you're sorted, no?

and as for jewellery? i don't have anything Nice, as such, i favour Big and Mad on the jewellery front. lots of great things in charity shops, tesco do good bits and bobs, as do accessorise. two bangles is almost always better than one. .

SlightlyMadSweet · 24/04/2008 22:23

I really like that actually.

Can't get it for tomorrow though.

The dress does give shape - pulls in under bust with a tie back.

I just question whether it is too long and there are one or 2 people here that think the trousers are wrong. Having said that I have just looked back at pic and I can't see my trousers. They seem to have merged with my sofa...so maybe you are looking at hte width of my whole sofa when you say they are too wide ???

OP posts:
Heated · 24/04/2008 22:24

You are certainly along the right lines with the top in your picture because it's good to use detail at the top of your body and around your bust to draw the eye upwards away from the tummy. But agree maybe too long, unless going to wear it with tights/boots or more fitted trousers. And definitely beautiful chunky pendants at your throat or jaunty scarf.

SlightlyMadSweet · 24/04/2008 22:25

Actually we have an eccentric Inidan man in teh village that is hte seamstress ....apparently he is very good at taking up trousers.

OP posts:
Heated · 24/04/2008 22:25

Am going to squint more closely at your legs

SlightlyMadSweet · 24/04/2008 22:26

So I do need a pendant then?

Nice and chunk like hte Tesco ones?

Do you think my DTDs could knock together someout of their classy wooden bead box???

OP posts:
FeelSadandStupid · 24/04/2008 22:28

I still say wear it with tights and your shoes. Then either get it shortened so can be a top for next time you go out, or get some darker more fitted jeans.

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 24/04/2008 22:28

Are you holding a tv remote control?????
