Christmas party dress - yay or nay?

lamalamalamasquirrel · 26/10/2023 22:13

Is this dress good for an office christmas party do you think? Then I've got some dinner parties to go to and I thought it would work for new years eve too. What do you think? Is it a bit much?

It isn't frumpy. The one suggested by Jewelspun is.

Absolutely.

AmyDudley · 28/10/2023 15:19

I really like it (but I care not a jot if people think I am frumpy - I wear whatever I like). The one jewelspun linked to looks like an armchair cover/curtains, I'd be terrified Julie Andrews would whip it off me so she could clothe 7 children with it.

Rubyupbeat · 28/10/2023 17:13

It is lovely. Though I am biased, as just wore this for a 21st party.
I shall be wearing over the Christmas period too.

kurotora · 28/10/2023 20:44

I like the original dress best OP. I’m 39 and I would rock that with the right accessories. Hate most of the others for that annoying long sleeve, Amish neckline, short skirt up your bum look which flatters precisely 0.1% of the population.

Pyramintdreamer · 28/10/2023 19:55

What about this Dress

Do you think that if the OP's general preference is the dress she picked that, regardless of what you might think of it, that something like this would be what she's looking for?

It's awful. I suppose it's fine if that's the sort of thing you like, but OP hasn't given any indication she does.

It looks like a Halloween dress. It’s just missing a witches hat

Feel better now? WTF is wrong with people on this site lately?

@Jewelspun
That's a truly gorgeous dress!

I agree.

Peggoty · 29/10/2023 18:42

Office Christmas parties aren't about Christianity either.

Onesoftautumn · 29/10/2023 19:14

Honestly appalled at some of the comments. Also I think it’s safe to assume if the OP has chosen a longer dress with a long sleeve that that is either what she’s comfortable with or what suits her body type.

Why are bodycon mini dresses being suggested instead!?

All I would say OP, is this dress is definitely for someone with some height and quite a full hourglass. If you’re very slim or square I do think you’ll get lost in this particular dress.

Asides from that it has some jazz it’s perfectly acceptable for someone who wants to look nice and not like a Vegas showgirl.

In the same breathe, if you feel you have to dress this way because it’s age appropriate, I think you can afford to be a little more risqué if you’re comfortable.

SayYesToTheWrapDress · 29/10/2023 19:18

I'd wear that dress to work.

lwishyouwould · 29/10/2023 19:22

Personally I'm celebrating the chance to go out and get ruined with my mates/colleagues. If there's below average food, cocktails and a cheesy DJ then all the better.

I'm afraid Jesus isn't getting a look in.

LaDerniereVacheFolle · 27/10/2023 16:51

Just had a proper look at TU and honestly this dress is preferable.

That's rank. Definitely not preferable!

Onethingatatime23 · 29/10/2023 19:31

I think it's a great dress and the shoes are brilliant with it.

Honestly, I wouldn't ask for fashion advice in Style & Beauty as a thirty something any more than I'd ask a bunch of blokes down the pub or pop into my local WI meeting to ask what they thought of my dress. Most people on here's fashion sense ended in 1988, and some a good ten years earlier than that. Better to just trust your own feelings and if you like something, wear it.

SayYesToTheWrapDress · 29/10/2023 19:18

I'd wear that dress to work.

You would wear a floaty dress with glittery zodiac signs to work? I mean, you do you, but the dress is plainly a going-out dress and not office attire.

Figgygal · 29/10/2023 20:43

It's not a night out dress though is it? Certainly not for the events you've mentioned.
It's literally in the day dresses section

kurotora · 29/10/2023 20:51

Who says she works in an office?

HeadNorth · 29/10/2023 20:58

kurotora · 29/10/2023 20:51

Who says she works in an office?

That is true - she may have a glamorous evening job. So saying ‘I would wear that dress to work’ is pretty unhelpful if you don’t specify where you work.

It reminds me of the 1990s (good) and Stevie Nicks (good).

I also think it’s very suitable for someone who doesn’t want to show off her body but wants something partyish.

My slight reservation is that it would overwhelm a short woman. I also think that the fabric could feel sweaty but that’s not really a problem for pre-peri women like the OP (generally speaking).

Diva66 · 30/10/2023 18:06

It’s gorgeous, I think I’ll buy one myself!

WeighDownOnMe · 30/10/2023 20:09

OP is this the dress worn in this Instagram reel?

I actually quite like it on but it probably does work better as a day dress with boots than party wear.
