Christmas party dress - yay or nay?

lamalamalamasquirrel · 26/10/2023 22:13

Is this dress good for an office christmas party do you think? Then I've got some dinner parties to go to and I thought it would work for new years eve too. What do you think? Is it a bit much?

I think it's borderline frumpy. Very safe neckline, very safe length, not modern in shape. I'm mid-40s and wouldn't wear it.

What would you suggest? How can a standard length of dress be "safe"?

LeonBlack · 27/10/2023 07:40

I’m another who thinks it’s very frumpy.

HeadNorth · 27/10/2023 07:50

I think it is lovely. It is irrelevant if other posters would wear it - we all have different taste in what we like to wear, or we would all be in the same clothes. The dress is obviously to your taste and I think it is 100% appropriate for the occasions you plan to wear it.

All that remains to be seen is whether you look good in it - you can never really tell until you try something on.

miniproblem · 27/10/2023 07:52

I actually hate it more every time I look. The fabric, the frill at the bottom, the horrible bow on the back, pattern, colour, slip underneath.

Peggoty · 27/10/2023 06:33

It's nothing like Vampire"s Wife.

Oh. I stand corrected.

The model is stunning but I don’t think she’s doing that dress any favours. I can actually see it looking completely different on someone else, especially with the right shoes and accessories.

MissyB1 · 27/10/2023 08:20

Sorry I’m mid 50s and would feel old in that dress. And the big floppy sleeves, why are they on every dress I see these days, they are awful!!

123sunshine · 27/10/2023 08:21

Its giving me Halloween witch vibes. I really don’t like it.

TeaGinandFags · 27/10/2023 08:27

It's lovely!

The first dress was gorgeous - go with your instincts - you know what you like!

Maybe your only mistake was posting it on here.

Whatever it is you've posted - someone will slag it off. As we all have different tastes.

I liked the first dress better as well. Grin

Thank you! It's on its way so hopefully it looks like the picture!

I like it, it's a bit gothy and it has a v neckline which I love. V necks aren't in fashion at the moment, which is a bugger for those of us with boobs because high necks make us look like we're being strangled, and very low cut necklines look too much.

I don't like the tier - I'm so bored with them, and I think they're hugely unflattering and blah. It's been tough trying to buy dresses without them the last few years. And I'm not sure about the fabric, it might feel cheap. Would also need to make sure you don't have a massive great starburst on your bum or over a boob - always a risk with a pattern like that. Overall though, lovely dress and definitely suitable for Christmas. I think the length and sleeves might date it quickly though, it probably won't feel right next year.

I don't think I want an "unsafe" dress. I like to not worry about what I'm wearing

They meant a slip dress on its own. Just the slip.

Yes I know but I've not got the figure for it. This seemed a nod in the right direction

To me this would be a very good thing 😁 We're all different. I was a teenage goth and have always fancied being a witch, it's just the clothes are a bit impractical for childcare and gardening.

lamalamalamasquirrel · 27/10/2023 08:42

@SnapdragonToadflax Thank you! Good point about the positioning of the pattern. Yes I like a v neck for boobage reasons. I can't deal with anything lower cut.

StarlightLady · 27/10/2023 08:45

I like it. I want to do a twirl ini it! And l like the OP’s logic of it being what l call “Christmas neutral”!

Stopbloodybanging · 27/10/2023 08:45

God no! Sorry, I think it’s hideous. Length is frumpy, flare is frumpy, neckline is frumpy and pattern is too big. But to be fair, you might think my taste is awful! Fashion is totally subjective.

MorrisZapp · 27/10/2023 08:45

I think it's lovely but more to the point, you really like it so you will look radiant.

I'm wearing something much frillier, flouncier and cheap to my works do and I can't bloody wait because I know I will feel gorgeous ❤️

LookItsMeAgain · 27/10/2023 08:53

I actually really like this one from Monsoon:

I'm not sure if your budget can go to that amount for a dress but I think it ticks a lot of the boxes you have about what to wear and when/where to wear it.

Oh. I stand corrected.

Indeed that looks nothing like the 1970s velour upholstery dress.

Woman2023 · 27/10/2023 08:57

I think it entirely depends on whether it suits your figure, and also whether it makes you smile when you put it on. The second being by far the most important when choosing outfits to wear to parties.

(Have never worried about what's in fashion so obviously landed in style by accident.)

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 27/10/2023 08:57

It's the same as the neckline @HeadNorth

It looks like they want to ship it to as many people as possible so studiously avoided making any design choices.

It's all designed not to put anyone off, not to make anyone stand out, to feel safe as an option because it is safe; nobody will do a double take at you but guarantee nobody will notice it either.

BlowingAway · 27/10/2023 08:57

I personally like it but would cut off the tier at the bottom and hem it. I think it would look a lot better.
