Christmas party dress - yay or nay?

Is this dress good for an office christmas party do you think? Then I've got some dinner parties to go to and I thought it would work for new years eve too. What do you think? Is it a bit much?

I'm another one who thinks they're frumpy, sorry. I'm mid 50s and definitely wouldn't wear it....

I’m eye-rolling at all these ‘fashionista’ posters who think they’re so much cooler than OP with their alternative suggestions & bitchy comments 🙄

If that’s aimed at me. I just don’t like the styles or patterns of the Monsoon dresses.

I’ve bought things from them in the past but definitely in the past 5-10 years I think they’ve lost their way a bit.

RoseBucket · 27/10/2023 11:19

It looks like a Halloween dress. It’s just missing a witches hat.

Arrivederla · 27/10/2023 11:21

Op - I don't like your original dress (especially the pattern) but it's definitely not inappropriate for the occasions you have mentioned.

Try it on and see - you might love or hate it and if it's hate then people have posted lots of useful alternatives 🙂. Don't flounce off though because of some rather blunt comments - you asked for opinions, and got them!

Littlelucas · 27/10/2023 11:38

It’s not ,awful - but I definitely wouldn’t wear that and I’m in my 40’s. It is just “meh”.

GettingStuffed · 27/10/2023 11:41

It's gorgeous

Right? This board has become so nasty and bitchy, feels like all the twats from AIBU who will pick on literally anything the OP says or does are bleeding over here.

It used to be a nice place to get suggestions, ideas and feedback. It felt overall positive. Apparently it's now turned into somewhere to be laughed at, told you look old, frumpy, like a Halloween witch or Miss Frizzle.

Poor OP, I really feel for her because I sense she really liked the dress and has now had the wind really knocked out of her sails by all these bitchy "fashionistas" who are suggesting dresses that don't suit the OP's style or aesthetic at all and are just what's most "in" right at this moment in time.

milkysmum · 27/10/2023 11:48

Sorry op I think it's quite ugly and doubt it will be flattering on. It also looks a bit like a Halloween costume.

Hopingforbettertimesoon · 27/10/2023 11:58

Oh sorry I didn’t mean to be rude. I really like it and if I was in uk would consider buying myself. Also I love Mrs Frazzle! She is very cool . So it really wasn’t an insult. The dress just made me think of her when I saw it and she is soo fab in my eyes.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 27/10/2023 12:08

I like the print and I think it's a nice dress for going out for a meal, but it doesn't say 'party' to me, so it probably depends on what your office party actually involves . I would like it a lot more if it fell just above the knee - but possibly that's because I am quite short so couldn't imagine myself in a dress with that much fabric.

MidnightMeltdown · 27/10/2023 12:12

@VeridicalVagabond To be fair, nobody is saying that OP looks old frumpy etc. People were asked for their opinions on the dress. When several people said that they thought it was frumpy, OP asked why they thought it was frumpy. For me, it the cut and the fabric.

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 27/10/2023 12:14

Exactly. People gave opinions on the dress not the OP, as requested.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 27/10/2023 12:15

lamalamalamasquirrel · 27/10/2023 06:05

Is This any better? It's in the workwear edit though so I thought might not say "party/celebration"

Whilst I prefer a lower neckline, I think the length of this one is more party-ish. Again, I like the print .

Moveoverdarlin · 27/10/2023 12:30

It’s extremely safe. It’s fine but you won’t stand out. I’m 43 and wouldn’t wear it. Lots of my aunties would though and they’re in their 70s.

When people say it’s frumpy it’s because it’s long and covers everything, it has long sleeves, it’s a dark colour, it’s very loose fitting and it’s showing very little skin. So it’s safe, you’re hiding every kind of asset.

But OP has explained why she likes the cut and the neckline that people are picking at. That should draw a line under it, not result in people getting increasingly rude and nasty in pushing the fact that they think it's frumpy and ignoring that the OP has said she likes the cut, fabric, pattern, neckline, whatever.

bronkie · 27/10/2023 13:24

@VeridicalVagabond look at the title - she said Yay or Nay.

Yeah, yay or nay, not "will I look like a frumpy old lady or Miss Frizzle"?

Do people really not understand the difference between providing an opinion and being a cunt anymore?

Spirro · 27/10/2023 13:41

It’s not ageist to say it’s a style you usually see older people wearing 🙄

Here's a thought- maybe showing off "your assets" isn't the only priority.

Lentilweaver · 27/10/2023 14:27

my objection is the fabric. But very difficult to get nice fabric in a budget these days.

Quite - as if repeatedly repeating "frumpy" makes you some sort of MN Jess Carter-Morley or Anna Murphy. (It doesn't)

The alternative suggestions have been generally hilariously bad.

HeadNorth · 27/10/2023 14:33

I am one who liked the dress from the start - it has a Stevie Nicks vibe to me, which I love.

Some people can't seem to understand that others have different tastes to them and it does not make them wrong or their clothes ugly. You can say you personally dislike something while recognising it may fit the OP's brief. The bitchy comments are just pathetic.

I don't think that it is though.

miniproblem · 27/10/2023 15:17

I get not everyone is like me but it I wanted honest opinions on a dress, I'd probably come here.
I might ignore it or think everyone is wrong but I would accept that's what I'd asked for by posting.

Personally I want to know if other people think something is awful or not appropriate because I don't want to turn up somewhere feeling out of place. Mostly I don't need to ask because I have impeccable taste. 😉
