Christmas party dress - yay or nay?

lamalamalamasquirrel · 26/10/2023 22:13

Is this dress good for an office christmas party do you think? Then I've got some dinner parties to go to and I thought it would work for new years eve too. What do you think? Is it a bit much?

But OP has explained why she likes the cut and the neckline that people are picking at. That should draw a line under it, not result in people getting increasingly rude and nasty in pushing the fact that they think it's frumpy and ignoring that the OP has said she likes the cut, fabric, pattern, neckline, whatever.

@VeridicalVagabond perhaps, but how many people read a whole thread before posting? I often only read the OP.

If OP really likes it, then it's not clear why she's asking for opinions online. It seems like an odd thing to do if you don't want peoples honest opinions.

Spirro · 27/10/2023 15:51

I didn’t rtft, I just commented with my opinion of the dress in the OP 🤷‍♀️

WeighDownOnMe · 27/10/2023 15:53

So if someone explains why they like what they've posted, all comments from them on should be either in full support or withheld?

That's stupid. It's a discussion board. You post asking for opinions, you take your chances. Not until you give your reasoning then expect everyone to go 'you know what actually, you're right, love it'.

lamalamalamasquirrel · 27/10/2023 10:35

Right I'm not looking at this thread anymore. It's just a load of people laughing at it or being ageist.

Well you did ask? 🤷‍♀️

Lentilweaver · 27/10/2023 14:27

my objection is the fabric. But very difficult to get nice fabric in a budget these days.

That was might first thought tbh. Looks. Like something from Sainsbury's Tu range (fabric-wise).

LaDerniereVacheFolle · 27/10/2023 16:15

My.

Vinoveritass · 27/10/2023 16:19

@LookItsMeAgain I love your alternative suggestion, much nicer than the original which does look frumpy and old fashioned nighty like I'm afraid. I do prefer the teal shorter one out of your two suggestions OP

LaDerniereVacheFolle · 27/10/2023 16:51

Just had a proper look at TU and honestly this dress is preferable.

Christmas party dress - yay or nay?
HeadNorth · 27/10/2023 17:44

I, for one, don't think that Tu dress is preferable. It looks like a perfectly pleasant dress, but nothing says 'party'. The OP's choice has a sparkly pattern and floaty Steve Nick's vibe that seems much more evening and partyish to me. Plus I just think it is a lovelier dress.

Dazedandmore · 27/10/2023 17:53

I don't like it. It doesn't seem to have flattering shape. The pattern with fireworks or stars is horrendous ... like wrapping paper. Sorry :) I hope you like it though!

Mirabai · 27/10/2023 18:04

I think the dress in the OP just looks very cheap. It could be Asda. Doesn’t look Monsoon.

And the trouble with Monsoon is that don’t do a petite range and their ‘small’ is a large 10 +.

VelvetVoice · 27/10/2023 18:09

imho this dress is good for nothing sorry

Lilibert456 · 27/10/2023 18:21

Looks very frumpy and old fashioned.

ItsmeImtheproblem200 · 27/10/2023 18:31

lamalamalamasquirrel · 27/10/2023 10:29

That's incredibly ageist

It’s not ageist it’s a common marketing technique. Different age brackets… saying that’s ageist is like saying a dress wouldn’t suit a man is sexist.

missipp · 27/10/2023 18:54

I'm sorry I think it's hideous. The style and pattern is really awful. My first thought was that it looked like a Halloween or Bonfire costume with the fireworks on there.

Blah12345678999 · 27/10/2023 18:56

I think it’s a lovely dress, and perfectly festive neutral! Personally I probably wouldn’t wear it myself but more because it’s not my own personal style and I probably couldn’t do it justice either! Things can look so different on other people, especially depending on their own personal style. Objectively it’s a lovely dress, if you feel comfortable in and happy with it then go for it! Also think it’s nicer than the other suggestions but guess this goes to show we all have different tastes!

HerMammy · 27/10/2023 19:00

Saying something is frumpy isn't ageist, if you asked for shoe ideas for xmas party; you're 25, size 10, looking to match this dress, and someone suggested these shoes and was shot down, is that ageist??
No it's fact, we can't never have an opinion if we fear offending every sensitivity.

I like the pattern but I agree it's frumpy. Badly fitting and baggy. I'm 5 foot 1 and would look dumpy in it.

Namddf · 27/10/2023 19:02

Absolutely not OP, sorry.

LivelyBlake · 27/10/2023 19:05

I don't like it, sorry. It doesn't say party dress to me, and the embroidery is naff IMO.

I like this one suggested earlier www.monsoon.co.uk/flossie-velvet-fringe-dress-black-6407450001.html

Kerri44 · 27/10/2023 19:30

If you like it get it, I'm 44 it's not be something is pick but I like a more fitted shape

TiaraBoo · 28/10/2023 07:51

I’m 5ft1, I could make all of these dresses look frumpy!
So hopefully OP is a good height and the dress will look just right for her needs.

hellohellothere · 28/10/2023 08:36

I'm not sure what figure type it would suit. It makes the stunning model look crap. It would drown a short arse out.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 28/10/2023 09:05

I rather really like it. The colour is lovely and the pattern is a lot of fun.

a colleague has recently worn something very similar (in shape, not pattern) to a birthday party. She combined it with metallic doc martins and looked fab.
