Christmas party dress - yay or nay?

lamalamalamasquirrel · 26/10/2023 22:13

Is this dress good for an office christmas party do you think? Then I've got some dinner parties to go to and I thought it would work for new years eve too. What do you think? Is it a bit much?

I think you'd need to be on the tall side and no more than a size 14 (which rules me out!) or it would look frumpy!

bronkie · 27/10/2023 01:58

It looks a bit like a Halloween costume - a witch style dress.

To me, the print, the sleeve shape, the bow and the skirt shape make it look like the sort of nightie women used to wear in the 80s. The model looks delightful in it, but if you look properly, she looks lovely because she is pretty and slim with a face full of angles that contrast interestingly with the shapelessness of the dress. She'd look just as good in a sack. You look at any of those photos and crop out her face, and they say 'I just popped on my fluffy slippers to nip these leftover chips to the bin, tell your gran I said hello'.

Exactly!!

lalafox · 27/10/2023 02:30

I really don't like it. Sorry! I too am late 30s and I would never dream of wearing that. It's too old and frumpy. You will look much better in something a bit younger

friskybivalves · 27/10/2023 04:58

'I just popped on my fluffy slippers to nip these leftover chips to the bin, tell your gran I said hello'.

Essential oils on the side.

Music teacher.

Harry Potter.

ROFLING.

Couldn't sleep and now I'm wide awake with tears running into my pillow.

Sorry, OP. Twinkly night sky motifs with 1970s Diamonds Are Forever va-va-voom? Yes. New Age crystals vibe? Not so much, for me..

Escapetofrance · 27/10/2023 05:19

I agree with it looking frumpy, even on the beautiful model. If you like it, that’s all that matters though.

stayathomer · 27/10/2023 05:20

Love it op, gorgeous l!!

AutumIsOrange · 27/10/2023 05:21

I’d be afraid of any naked flames if I wore it (but it’s not to my taste anyway).

Much prefer the ‘Vampires Wife’ rip-off posted by @Jewelspun

SameToo · 27/10/2023 05:22

Christ what happened to Monsoon! I’d say all the dresses linked are awful.

lamalamalamasquirrel · 27/10/2023 06:00

Oh :(

I'd quite liked the "Glastonbury town/Harry potter" vibe of it. It looked fun.

It's fine - but the cut is too safe (read - dull and elderly)

I love the ones posted by @HerMammy

lamalamalamasquirrel · 27/10/2023 06:05

Is This any better? It's in the workwear edit though so I thought might not say "party/celebration"

I’m on the “it’s frumpy” bus I’m afraid. I’m 39 and this looks like the sort of thing my (76 year old) mother works wear.

The one above is much more modern.

Puccini1900 · 27/10/2023 06:17

It's a more modern cut.

Which should mean I like it more, but for some reason, I actually really dislike it (something about the material/ neckline?). I actually prefer the frumpy first one...

You're easily amused if that has tears rolling down your face.

Why would looking like a music teacher be bad. What a silly comment.

It's nothing like Vampire"s Wife.

The other one you posted is better but still strong Harry Potter vibes with the pattern.

I think it’s nice and very suitable for the occasions you suggest.
for me the jewelspun one looks much ore frumpy and unflattering, but maybe I’m getting old.

Mystro202 · 27/10/2023 07:04

Sorry op, too frumpy for late 30s imo. I could see my MIL who is in her 70s in it. You are still young, you deserve to look glam! But if you like it get it!

The first dress was gorgeous - go with your instincts - you know what you like!

Maybe your only mistake was posting it on here.

Whatever it is you've posted - someone will slag it off. As we all have different tastes.

I liked the first dress better as well. Grin

Snoken · 27/10/2023 07:12

I don’t like either dress. They both have very boring cuts and the fabric looks like it should be used for halloween costumes and the pattern just confirms that. The only age I could see someone wearing that is as a child on world book day or something.
