It sounds like your party was a good one Flo and pretty sure that like you say nobody noticed whet was probably an invisible sag.

is the weather artic too in Europe Bo and Bani? I love a freezing cold dry day.

i am also team Morocco (until we have to play them that is…) , but yeah it can get a bit out of hand. In Argentina the celebrations are absolutely crazy, and there have been bank holidays since the first match that Argentina played… 🤷🏻‍♀️
ok we don’t need to turn this onto a football thread.

70sDuvet · 11/12/2022 12:39

Flo I know you don't do ebay (yet?😉) but there are a good few pairs of swishy velvet trousers about there at the moment. I've been considering a pair myself, but my wardrobe these days seems to revolve around things I can go back to bed in for a few hours and re-emerge uncrumpled. I'm unsure how velvet would hold up to that, perhaps it would manage a nap on the sofa😂

Bani glad to be hair twins with you! I was just thinking of you last night and imagining if this thread was a real gathering in a pub (I may have slight cabin fever) the rest of us would be sitting chatting and then you would arrive and suddenly its all pints in the air cheering Bani yoow Banis here, in a very Irish friendly way.

I forgot to tell you all about my great bargain, this is how I knew I was feeling better. On vinted (my first foray in to that app) I got a Scahill Kate black silk shirt, a BNWT black and white 1/4 zip woolen jumper, a pink hoodie with a tiger embroidered on it, a pair of Bnwt bonds tracksuit bottoms and a silk camisole for £26.81😁

Red we are team Argentina here as the 9 year old loves Messi, but can't be bothered to watch the matches, and only knows 1 player......so not really great support at all 🤣

70sDuvet · 11/12/2022 12:58

I forgot to attach the picture of my new shirt,as modelled on their site.
They seem to make 5 styles of shirts and then the rest if their business is made to order.
The massive bargain I got appears to be unworn

I very rarely switch allegiance but the pics of the Morocco team celebrating with their mums warmed even my stone cold heart.

Yes I'm still resisting the call of Ebay and Vinted, 70s but I'm listening! They sound like great buys.

I read this Jess Cartner-Morley piece on high street fashion yesterday. She's as readable as ever but finished it feeling dissatisfied. It's all very well talking about gems you found in Topshop in 2015, and I know a piece about longevity in clothing has to be backward looking to some extent, but what I really wanted to hear were her thoughts on the current drop in quality - including at the so called high end, and the influence of the likes of Shein. And her advice to use bricks and mortar shops had me shouting at my phone - has she even been on a 'real' British high street recently?

botemp · 11/12/2022 18:57

Well I just read a different guardian article which is probably the worst piece of fashion journalism in a while <argh, I want my brain cells back> but that JCM piece is not much better, I agree.

I've noticed a general shift of personal accountability to we can only do so much individually which I don't disagree with in the main (corporations have a lot to answer for) and is probably kinder on current tightened wallets but it seems to be tipping into why bother even trying. And it's just birthing a new industry of you just have to know what to buy silly little people. What you don't know, pay me to tell you (because I get fed everything fed directly to me my PR people). It's the influencercation of everything, ugh, I'm going to stop because it's getting too ranty and probably stopped making sense midway anyhow. I blame the weird Mongolian rock/metal music (I guess? I'm no good with music genre recognition to begin with but this is extra weird) on in the background...

Temps are definitely around freezing here red but it doesn't feel cold 🤷it's not the usual cold we get here anyhow where humidity makes it feel much much colder. Looks to be staying for a while, I like it, I can wear a hat and not have to care about my hair 🎉

Flo would a swishy velvet skirt not make more sense? Same sensation but easier to dress down?

Oh dear duvet you're on the initial Vinted high, try not to buy everything. Silk shirt looks lovely though, best bargains are definitely lesser known brands.

It's -4 or so and freezingly foggy in the flat, unfashionable bits of Somerset, ie not Frome or Exmoor.

I read the JCM article too and thought she should try shopping somewhere like Taunton and see how it easy it is.

Redandblue11 · 11/12/2022 21:49

Bani might remember, and of course Bo (who remembers everything).
a couple of years ago my son was very curious about how his school shirts where made, and how tailors worked, then he wanted biodegradable trainers. I was all chuffed with myself for having given birth to the male version of Greta.
Fast forward two years and he will only wear Nike, black or white stuff. Nothing else.
(I am exaggerating, he will throw in some of his sports hoodies etc but you get the gist)
Anyhow. My Christmas shopping is easy.

Floisme · 12/12/2022 10:45

It probably would bo, except I can't remember when I last wore a skirt - certainly not this year. Even the ones I've talked about on here and that weren't cheap are getting neglected at the moment. I'm sure I'll go back to them at some point but right now, they're just not doing it for me.

70sDuvet · 12/12/2022 12:46

No Bo don't worry I'm being very sensible and only looking for gaps in my wardrobe. OK I didn't need the striped jumper but it's one of those ones that's in every magazine/online article atm as a must buy piece.....which usually make me run away from them. Oh no am I turning normal😱

I also bought my son a really heavy leather jacket from Santa, he wants to be a rock star. His favourite band is Metallica. So once it arrived at the princely sum of £9 and my sister saw the seller had another age 12 that would fit my nephew he's getting one too (I'm secretly hoping it will fit me and I can steal it once he grows out of it.)

Red my son was a lovely little thing who only wore rainbow colours and hated black. Now he's 9 and trying to grow his hair, wanting a perm and black skinny jeans. Ah well self expression is a good thing.

I'm finally doing the wardrobe swap over today- went in decided that this year I was going to streamline everything and have a capsule type wardrobe. Especially since I know I won't be ready to go anywhere until at least February.
Am I putting lurex tops, silk jackets and 35 jumpers into the wardrobe - why yes I am.

On the maxi skirt trend...I never know what to wear on top, I have a nice black layered, but they are all the same length black skirt. It looks great with my abattoir boots. I have one grey and darker grey zebra print slouchy v neck jumper that looks great, other than that I get stumped??

botemp · 12/12/2022 13:16

I'm actually surprised how little maxi length 90s style skirts there are. I think the retailers had been anticipating seling loads but I've yet to spot them on people. If it's one of those duvet long line tops are the usual pairing, isn't it? The whole slinky noodle look. Skinny long scarf and arm warmers to accessorise if you want to go all out.

I do remember Red's DS sudden Greta conversion. I also think he was making Red do all the leg work 😂 I just don't remember it being two years ago 😱 Babies born on this thread are going to be graduating uni before I know it...

Thanks for all the pics and links! (belated) Duvet, sorry to hear about your health!

I am spending my evenings exploring the two links posted above - the permanent style one and the cutting class one. Thanks for posting them! My routine now is to read the posts/guides there and go and examine some of my coats or shirts or trousers. I discovered so many things! Even whole elements I didn't notice. Or kinds of weave I never knew I had. Or that they existed.

I have two questions if anyone has any pointers for me. One is ahead of the sales. I'd like - probably - a bag like this. Perhaps in suede (although maybe it's nuts?). Mud colour maybe, brown or suchlike. Isabelle Marant has similar ones but they are too embellished for my liking...

And also, the question I joined this thread with, the hem length of trousers. I got out 5 pairs of trousers, I think I need to redo their hems but I am still unsure to what length... 50-s men style Margaret Howell trousers seem to be styled to be on a shorter side.. But bo always looks so good in her trousers, and they are quite loooong. I am specifically thinking about her last photo report from Antwerp. Or it really depends on the style of the trouser - flat front, or multiple folds at the waist, etc. I was searching for guides in vain. Super long hems (Bella Hadid seems to be liking funky suits with very long trousers) look very good in pics but will get ruined very quickly, right? I am tempted to go for max length

What is it about this weather that makes my hair suddenly behave. I don't want to move to the Arctic circle permanently for good hair 🥶

Suede, yes, probably not the best material, unless you go really high end. It just doesn't wear as nicely as leather in the long term, it's more susceptible to bad weather and often the dye rubs off on clothes.

Trousers length sort of depends on the trouser cut and your body proportion. A straight cut rarely looks good in maxi length, you need some sort of flare in them to work as maxi length and usually underneath, some sort of platform or heel, it doesn't need much but just enough to alter posture. Proportionally you might tip over into something weird with maxi length if you've got long legs with a short torso and vice versa for cropped. However, where the waistline sits visually can rectify it to a certain extent, ie. low waisted maxi length on a short torso, high waisted cropped on a long torso.

That’s really helpful and does rather explain why I feel I suit wide legged high waisted slightly cropped trousers! Sorry have been rather absent but bo I meant to post this collar I bought last year in Iceland - it’s incredibly warm and flattering because you can wear a finer knit underneath rather than the full-on Icelandic bear hug of a sweater. (Although I’m layered up because I’m freezing atm!) Your desire for a Killing sweater is probably long gone but just in case Nb they would knit to order as well. catherine no need for elbow patches if you had one of these on!

That's a lovely little shrug/collar thing mm, they never stay put on my shoulders though 🤷

I'll have to look them up, I've just realised Gudrun and Gudrun of the Killing jumpers is actually Faroese, not Icelandic. I quite like this red jumper of theirs but I'll hold on and see if it goes on sale. They're quite inventive with their knitwear beyond the traditional designs.

mm that’s a gorgeous collar / cape / statement piece!

went straight onto Vinted and saw this :Icelandic collar that is sadly not my colour but thought I’d share the love here.

Lots to catch up on, will read and come back.
Minimal style going on here apart from an inadvertent military vibe when I realised that zipping up my coat meant I was head to toe in khaki with massive black stormtrooper boots. Been a very long time since I had the buzzcut to match 🪖

mm47 · 15/12/2022 10:22

shang super quick sleuthing v impressed and I do like sound of zipped up khaki and black storm boots for doing battle in the Christmas fray! Hope everyone is toasty warm xx

mm47 · 15/12/2022 10:26

bo this collar can’t slip off my shoulders because the opening is too small but I know what you mean about normal shrugs. Love the textures on that red sweater.

Redandblue11 · 15/12/2022 11:30

Shagpie I might get that Vinted collar. Really love it.
your collar is fab mm , i like the whole look you got there with those shoes too.
that red sweater is lovely too Bo

Those Celtic boots look great, Red, looking forward to your report on comfort etc. just read the latest DisneyRoller girl newsletter with her blog on Hedi Slimane. I notice he hasn’t got the memo about skinny jeans tucked into boots!

Huh, I could have sworn those images were from his first show at Celine or actually maybe the second when it went very haute bourgeois Paris. The first was more where he left off at YSL, sorry SL. But those pics have a bit of both 🤷 The man does love his skinnies...

I saw an article recently but it was paywalled and I couldn't get past it (and too cheap to pay out for a subscription) that mentioned Celine doubled it sales with Hedi Slimane which sounds impressive considering they've not been much of a media darling, social or traditional. However, considering the brand had very limited retail points under Phoebe Philo and was above being online I'm wondering how impressive that sales growth really is as I remember reading something about Dior increasing revenue several folds (just can't remember the number but it was Shock and much more than two) since going online.

Anyhow, boots with skinnies <shrugs> each to their own and all that, there's enough royalty threads to drive everyone as it is, please don't toss in a what's dated bun fight (unless there's cardamom buns involved).

OP posts:
mm47 · 16/12/2022 15:24

eek sorry didn’t mean to invite shitstorm it just seemed this was new development because DisneyRollerGirl is talking about it. (puts on tin hat swaps for chef’s hat and offers virtual cardamom buns for placatory purposes…)

Next provocative subject please - over to someone else!

botemp · 16/12/2022 15:43

Don't worry, I was just joking but I really don't know why skinnies with boots are such a hotly contested topic on this board, but I can probably say that about a lot of recurring threads on MN 🤐

OP posts:
mm47 · 16/12/2022 15:45

Phew! 😘

Floisme · 16/12/2022 16:05

Ooh if we're talking provocative, here's my contribution:

I don't like skinnies with knee boots and never have.
Biker jackets are not a classic.
I didn't get beyond Episode One of That Documentary because it bored me senseless.

I am now logging off until 2024 Wink

botemp · 16/12/2022 16:31

But how old do I look Flo, can't be waiting till 2024 on you to know that...

(I haven't seen the documtary or even the Oprah interview, I was ignoring them way before it was cool.

Biker jackets are the female equivalent of MAMIL and they don't even have cool bikes to show for it.

Never liked skinnies, never will, I couldn't care less what shoes you wear with them.

Now, crocs...)
