bani, that sounds very Heston Blumenthal. I like cooking, but my skills are much more basic. bo dd1 used to like the Percy Jackson books, there's a running joke about no food being blue and his mum using blue food colouring 🤮.

botemp · 03/06/2022 10:23

Yes, I think it's more the inflexibility of Northern European meals vs rest of Europe where food is much more easily adaptable to feed more people. I find the funniest thing about #Swedengate is the strong food culture Southern Europeans response to it, it's so over the top hilarious, you'd think you just confessed to smothering babies.

Missmoon I'm fairly sure they do, Ln-cc already has some pieces in the sale (might be a private sale) and I think Matches has some in their just launched sale as well.

Studio Nicholson is reminding me, Bani's search for a non transparent white t-shirt would definitely be solved there but at a cost. Though I suspect they might get them made by Sunspel too but they're a lot more interesting cut and oversized than the standard Sunspel ones.

missmoon · 03/06/2022 11:19

Thanks @botemp, I had a look on Matches but they only seem to have the men’s range (unless I’ve missed something?).

About Sunspel, someone recommended them on here so I bought a couple of things a while ago. The colours are wonderful, but the t-shirts did shrink quite a bit despite careful washing at 30 and line drying. Also thinner than I expected (might be a summer weight). They do have lots of promotions, it’s worth signing up for the newsletter.

botemp · 03/06/2022 12:17

Yeah, I think at the time when we talked about Sunspel the experiences were mixed so it's a bit disappointing that it's such a game of luck or a case of varying quality according to price tag. I think the person who really recommended them bought their most expensive t-shirts. I have always viewed them as t-shirts that men wear as a layer under things as opposed to t-shirts in their own right though.

😳 not feeding children?
Obviously as a South American that would be sacrilege! I always feed whoever happens to be in my house, children specially and if I only have x number of pork chops and more guests I quickly turn to doing some pasta for the children (and adults the pork chops) , they all like pasta .
So after more than 2 years dodging covid we now have it. It is truly awful, felt rotten yesterday… still do …

ShangPie · 03/06/2022 13:32

Red you have my sympathies. Getting Covid late in the game is the worst - you still have all the horrible grotty feeling but none of the sympathy as everyone expects you to have had it already.

#Swedengate has not popped the Jubilee bubble here, but it sounds like a great pan-European scandal.

banivani · 03/06/2022 13:39

Sunspel is well out of my price range anyway. Noticed the brand Armed Angel and maybe maybe - they have an "undyed" cotton option I quite liked too. My v-necks are starting to feel all wrong for me and my daughter suggested lower round necks, but not quite scoop - which is, obv, hard to find.

See Red, I can't rethink a plan on the fly like that, I'm a recipe follower. And I hate over cooking because we waste too much leftovers as it is, so I seldom have ingredients to spare, like. IMO what needs to be done is that kids have to understand that they can stay and play until dinnertime, and if no invitation is coming then that is an obvious cue to go home. Everyone saves face. I prefer to invite them to eat with is of course, which is not a problem if I know they are coming. Frankly my biggest problem is the ones who voluntarily WANT to wait in the bedrooms. So weird!!! I don't know how to push them to stop being eejits and sit down.

So sorry about your covid, it can really knock you for six!

Floisme · 03/06/2022 14:21

I settled for some Rapanui Ts in the end bani. I wasn't looking for quite the same as you - I was after long sleeves and definitely not white - but I can bore for England on trying to find a round neckline that's neither crew nor scoop, and theirs were the best I could find at that price point.

I don't think we ever have guests dropping in expecting to be fed. Coffee / cake / beer / glass of wine yes but that's it. Cannot think why 😀

I hope you feel better soon Red. I've also escaped Covid so far, and I haven't even been that careful since I had the 3rd jab. I'm sure when it happens, I'll get no sympathy or even interest whatsoever.

Redandblue11 · 03/06/2022 14:23

Thank you for the sympathies.
shangpie exactly! I feel robbed! None of the sympathy… there are no rules, no tests, I cannot even log in my positive result , the government doesn’t even care who has it …
there was an article about it in the guardian, very funny.
*warning ! Not fashion related in the slightest!!! Feel free to ignore

botemp · 03/06/2022 14:34

Well I'm sure no Swede (or Finn) will be offering Erdogan dinner anytime soon. Yeah, the obsession with waste should not be underestimated either, it's another Calvinist quirk. I once stayed in a a street where garbage collection day was this weird contest of whomever had the least to offer the garbage men...

I know it sounds inhumane not to offer food to some foody cultures but on the flip side, some food cultures are so obsessed with feeding you where you can't say no for fear of insult that it's really uncomfortable, I much prefer being left in a room while others eat to that.

Poor you Red I think you've already racked up the most inopportune quarantines on this thread only to get it now. I hope it's relatively mild Flowers

I was really hesitant paying extra €€€ again for flexible/cancelable rates for upcoming holidays in case of covid. Was rather against it at first but had the sense to check how well vaccination protection was after so many months of booster, bit horrified to find out it's not much against Omicron which means my days are probably numbered too so decided to fork over the extra €€€.

Very sorry that you and your family have the lurgy during the festive weekend red; miserable for you all, especially if you feel awful. I haven't had it yet either, and just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get it on holiday...

Sunspel T shirts are somewhat over-rated in my opinion too, as I got one for DS and sent it back when the seams twisted in the wash. I like Uniqlo's discontinued henleys but they are starting to wear out and I am panicking.

Floisme · 03/06/2022 17:39

Just popping back to say how much this republican has enjoyed her extra day off, and to recommend to you this piece by the excellent Marina Hyde.
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jun/03/kardashian-prince-harry-andrew-jubilee-royals

So much to enjoy: the Queen 'dressed like a particularly fragile Wedgwood vase'.

Or Prince Andrew's Covid: 'That was the exact same excuse I was going to use to get out of writing a column on a bank holiday, but then I remembered that I’d had it in January, and also haven’t just paid £12m to an accuser in a sexual assault case.'

As for the outfits, yes of course I've studied them all and I nominate Theresa May for best dressed Prime Minister.

quirkychick · 03/06/2022 18:10

bani, as a child, dinnertime would have signalled time to go back to your own house, unless you had been specifically invited to eat. As a parent, I would have arranged for children to play and discussed meal options already.

Re the jubilee, we are having a Street Party, as we have one each year, anyway. The forecast is iffy, so we will probably have another later in the summer. I'm pretty much a Republican, but I'm happy to take extra celebrations. It's half-term, anyway, so doesn't seem much different.

I hope you feel better soon, red. We had a second lot of Covid in February, where no one was really ill and the adults in the house didn't even test positive properly.

Redandblue11 · 03/06/2022 18:32

Thank you Flo great article. I am certainly not a royalist but very much enjoy a day off (well I was in bed anyway) and the opportunity to nose about what people are wearing.
Fragile Wedgwood, the description is uncanny thinking of it.
I lol a lot at Prince Louis to be honest.

XingMing · 03/06/2022 20:02

Lovely thoughts, but I am trying to get a lost swift out of the sitting room. It's gone under a sofa and it's probably crapping bricks. No Wedgwood here!

XingMing · 03/06/2022 20:05

ANd I'd also put money on Theresa May to be the best dressed ex PM, Flo. The only PM to take clothes seriously.

botemp · 04/06/2022 09:28

Even including current PM she's likely to outdress them all. I always feel a bit bad for Theresa May, seemed like she always got it from all sides.

Google is a bit useless though in showing me what she actually wore, and I can't be doing with trawling the DM so I'll take your words on it that she looked fab (and hopefully didn't do another one of those weird curtsies she always did).

Weirdly the only jubilee news I saw here was that Meghan and Harry got booed, and some cheers but not as badly booed as Johnson, Johnson getting booed somehow wasn't a news item Confused but I guess that's down to the clickbait economy. No one really understand the Trooping the Colour thing here (not sure I do either) and think the Fragile Wedgewood is a weirdo for not retiring already.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 04/06/2022 10:15

I am googling TM outfits now … cannot believe that is what I am actually doing … anyhow, does this guardian piece help?
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/oct/10/theresa-mays-wardrobe-decoding-her-brand-management

I am still unable to shake the virus off. Literally doing nothing other than googling nonsense. I am also clueless about that trooping the colour.

banivani · 04/06/2022 11:04

Can’t be bothered to look up jubilee outfit photos so if you have a good collection please do post it for my viewing pleasure.

agree that May is generally well dressed and seems to enjoy clothes.

Rapanui tees - not see through then?

Floisme · 04/06/2022 11:07

You need to study The Crown bo, then you will be a leading authority on all things royal like me 😉I feel sorry for the queen now, my guess is they had to pump her full of medication to get her through Thursday. And I don't think Prince Philip was ever quite the same after the Diamond Jubilee when they had to stand on that barge in the rain for hours.

I'll try and find a pic of Theresa May's outfit. I don't want to oversell it - it was yet another coat dress so presumably she'd got the memo - but it was in a deep green/jade colour that really suited her. I have mixed feelings about her really. She used to get awful flak for liking clothes, even on S&B, which made me curiously fond of her and, if I ever have the time and the energy, I'd love to compare the Brexit deal that she negotiated - and that got laughed out of parliament - with the one we ended up settling for. But then her leading role in the Windrush scandal really leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Hope you feel better soon Red

Floisme · 04/06/2022 11:16

Sorry bani cross post. I don't have a white Rapanui T but the ones I've got aren't see through. Quite a decent cotton, drapey but reasonably sturdy. Some people find the neckline too high but that's a personal thing. I'm happy with them although I was also so fed up of looking by this point, that I was ready to settle. Was also slightly peeved when I realised that, for all their singing and dancing about being an Isle of Wight company, they get them made in India (and then have the nerve to send emails lecturing me on climate change). But that aside they're ok. Not a ringing endorsement but better by far than a lot of what's out there.

botemp · 04/06/2022 11:33

Hmm, I have watched the Crown, so in my book TtC is her birthday but not really her birthday and unlike other countries the UK forces are alleged to the Crown not government so it's just a day of showing off that she can stage a coup if she feels like it...

It's difficult with politicians as it's not really their job to sell their appearance but obviously it'll be used to their advantage if they can capitalise on it. I just don't like the narrative that if someone like Theresa May enjoys fashion it's therefore a blanket allowance to take her to task for it (and by extension her appearance) just because you don't like her politics.

I'm not well versed enough with the Brexit deal differences (starkest difference would be the position of N. Ireland, I suspect) but I think response to Covid would have been very different under May. But, if anything, the Ukraine crisis has shown the EU and UK can work quite nicely together when they want to so it's all not as dire as sometimes made out.

That article Red linked aged like milk 😂 ouch

I may need to fact check that with my other source, which is 'The Royals' by Kitty Kelly. But I have to say that these days, I find the idea of an alternative authority from the government strangely comforting. Whether that says more about me or the state of the world, I really don't know.

botemp · 04/06/2022 11:54

I am fully expecting you all to accidentally vote in a Lord Buckethead type figure out of sheer exasperation at some point in the very near future.

I can sort of see living under QE2 wouldn't be a bad thing but then you get to her sons...

I know 😯Shame about Anne, I think she'd have been entertaining and done a fairly decent job, all things considered. And I'd have loved watching her recycle all her 70s outfits.
