Hmm, isn't Anne (being) installed as some special higher up of the Forces after Andrew and Harry had to exit. Perhaps she's planning a coup of her own. On the grounds of recycling 70s outfits I am fully in favour of this (although I do suspect they made her way cooler in the Crown).

Thanks Red - is that Eugenie in orange? I like it, but I do have a sneaky soft spot for her and Beatrice on account of having Andrew for a father.

And you are correct as always bo, Anne wasn't in the least bit cool in the 70s, although she went up in my estimation when we got get the day off school for her (first) wedding. (I was always easily bought off, even then.) But style wise, absolutely not - it was all about Princess Caroline of Monaco until Diana came along.

And sorry I haven't been able to find any pics of Theresa May's outfit. Not weird at all.

XingMing · 04/06/2022 16:21

I think the fuschia outfit was Zara Tindall's.

Redandblue11 · 04/06/2022 17:01

Yes Eugenie in orange and Zara T in pink. I also like a punchy colour.

Redandblue11 · 04/06/2022 17:16

from Twitter - Princess Anne in trooping the colour ;
in blue Zara T and Sophia winkleman (spelling?)
and at Epsom derby Zara in Blue with Claire B (I am sure although Twitter did not mention her).

ok, ok … if I am not careful I will be thrown out of the parisiennes thread … maybe I should go and join the other thread about the royals 🤐I am blaming covid.
I retire now.

Hope you feel better soon red. I also got covid recently after being so careful. My son coughed all over me and I ended up being quite ill- had expected it to be milder.

The Greeks won't be inviting Erdogan to dinner either Bo!!!

I also enjoyed the jubilee outfits. Most of them were lovely. I think the pink dress in the last photo (with zara in the orange) is the same dress that Beatrice wore in blue. I prefer the pink but I don't think it would have matched Beatrice's colouring at all.

I have been thinking about how to look more stylish. I have curly hair yet I notice all these people who discuss style and style tips ALWAYS have straight (or straightened) hair. Maybe it's just my hair (it needs a cut) but it always seems to look a bit "messy" recently. I need some curly inspiration I think.

And make-up, do you think wearing a bit of make up makes you look more together?

botemp · 05/06/2022 09:09

Come to think of it Dutch Turkish relations haven't been great either for some time (nowhere near the length of Greek Turkish strained relations though) so don't think he can count on dinner here either. Maybe he'd stop being such a grump if we fed him? Is he just hangry?

The jubilee outfits are all a bit too buttoned up for me to get excited about (apart from enjoying the bursts of colour). I do like Anne's 'fuck around and find out' vibes. Were the military vibes experienced differently this year or does Ukraine feel too far away to Brits?

I'm trying not to think of covid too much but I think we might have to sooner or later, things are not going well in Portugal with some subvariant and there's already murmurings here of possible restrictions in autumn. Seeing as we've always been slow that probably means restrictions sooner than that, urgh.

I do hear you on the curly hair, I kind of appreciate that my curly hair is a bit messy because it means it can tone down my tendency to overdress and I'm someone who needs very little makeup to look overdone with it. But, I know the feeling with curly hair annoyance and it really is just needing a cut, I think, a few layers weirdly make all the difference and trims not so much but knowing when layers need redoing is harder to schedule in advance than a trim. It's one of those subtle things other people don't really notice but you do.

I think the straight hair on camera is just because curly hair doesn't really look good in studio settings or in bright outdoor daylight even if it looks amazing in real life. It requires a lot of time and products to make it look good on camera and not everyone knows how to do it well (especially if it's a hairstylist doing it), straightened hair is just easier in that sense. Most curly hair you see on camera is straightened and then curled.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 05/06/2022 10:26

No idea how the military vibes were perceived this year by the majority. Personally, makes me a bit uncomfortable.

I cannot help on the curly hair Sophie, others will be able go in this thread (not least Bo!). I have naturally quite a wavy hair but I do not embrace it… I know , I know, maybe one day.
But on the being stylish front, do you mean more ‘put together’? Or more elegant? , I am not trying to be difficult but I think it might be tricky to describe depending on the person’s individual likes, styles, etc .
Yes, the obvious hair and make up are good places.
But for one person having a good coverage of make up and always lips and eyes done can be their signature (I have two friends who are very stylish imo and are always visible with make up on and for their style it suits them), others having a light BB type cream or something that ‘unified’ their imperfections and a bit of blush would be enough make up and in accordance to their style. Does it make sense? I think depending if you have an style but lost a bit the way during pandemic / children/ circumstances/ age it might be a case to tweak? Eg less or more make up? Or tweaking the shade of make up too …
The above comes with a huge warning as I am Not someone who knows how to apply make up properly, nor can be bothered… so might be talking trash there.
But I have noticed that make up that suited me say 4/5 years ago is definitely not a good look now. I am sure my friends or even my husband have not noticed any changes… but is just probably a different shade , less/more shine etc.

that is a lot of ramble !

Floisme · 05/06/2022 10:42

No need to apologise Red, I often dip into the Royal Style thread! It's nothing like my style and I'd be hopeless at it myself but it's such a distinctive look that I find it quite interesting. Personally I'd rather intersperse a bit of gossip with the outfits but, having seen a few of the recent Harry and Meghan threads, I understand why they clamp down on it. I didn't really pick up on a different military vibe bo but then I never really associate those parades and the dressing up with actual war, even though I know it's the same people.

I grew up desperately wanting long straight hair but then in the mid 70s everyone started asking me where I'd had it permed and I guess I just learned to appreciate what I had. The other thing that really helped was finding a hairdresser who had curly hair - that was pure luck rather than judgement but he just gets it. I'm also always surprised at how many people comb curly/wavy hair. I never, ever do that. And I wash it as little as I can get away with. I'm never going to look sleek or glossy but that's fine.

As regards make up, I wear very little now and often none at all. That's not a pledge and I might change my mind but I've got used to my face without it now so, when I do put some on, it looks odd. The main thing I still reach for is lipstick, which is funny as it's the one thing I never used to wear, but I like the way it transforms your face with minimum effort.

But basically although I adore clothes, I'm not really interested in grooming or make up so that's where I'm coming from.

SophieLion · 06/06/2022 08:35

Well yes my hair is well overdue a cut Bo but I need to wait until I'm in the UK (booked in for July) so that could play a part. it needs re-shaping and layers put back in.

I don't think you are being difficult at all Red! It's a fair and interesting question. I think I mean more put together - but in an effortless way! I don't wear loads of make-up (v v v rarely foundation or BB cream etc) but I do feel more put together when I put some eye make up on - just can't be bothered. Seems such a waste sometimes to put it on when I know I have to waste time taking it off (Bit silly as it takes 2 seconds to take off eye make up). And yes we definitely have to adjust make up as we age. Totally agree.

I need to bother to put on more accessories. Today I put a belt on with my shorts and my whole "Outfit" looks better. Seems laziness is my problem!

botemp · 06/06/2022 09:02

Yes, I suppose it is more pageantry than a military parade, Flo, suppose I should have thought of that before asking. It's just that we've had King's day and remembrance and liberation Day here and there was lots of attention paid to Ukraine those days as it seemed sort of weird celebrating. There were even some intense squabbles between historical reenactment groups who re-enact the liberation and usually have an old UK or Canadian vet over.

I get it Sophie, curly hair is annoying like that and hardly anyone can be trusted with it.

I do find it useful to have accessories out and displayed in some way, you're much likely to grab something. Goes for shoes and jewellery as well.

OP posts:
Floisme · 06/06/2022 11:24

If there was anything like that going on bo then it sailed right over my head, but then I'm really only in it for the gossip and the outfits so it's possible.

Eye make up is the absolute worst in my book SophieLion. It takes soooo long to put on properly then smudges before you've even got down the stairs. I just can't be bothered with it any more, but that probably means I'm not the best person to give advice!

SophieLion · 06/06/2022 13:07

I thought Kate had some lovely outfits. Meghan's was better than usual. Her always seems to wear nice clothes but very ill-fitting - very often you can see the line of her bra showing through. This always surprises me given her status and how much the clothes cost and surely she has a stylist or something?

Yes yes keeping belts and accessories in a handy visible place does help Bo. And yes to eye make up taking the longest to put on Floisme but on my face, it always makes such a difference. Very often I wear zero make up and think I look fine until I catch a glimpse of my reflection and then can't believe I left the house like that GrinGrin

SophieLion · 06/06/2022 13:08
  • she always seems to wear.... (goodness what terrible syntax "her always seems to wear..." Blush)
botemp · 06/06/2022 13:27

I have naturally hooded eyes so eye makeup has always been a pointless exercise, tightliner and mascara is as far as I'll go. I'm still getting used to fully painted lips post pandemic, some days I like it some days it just feels way too much. I always forget how well blush suits me though, I never think to wear it but when I do I get all excited about it. I think people who enjoy makeup really love the transformational aspect of it, I prefer getting that from clothes.

Meghan's fitting issues are an odd one considering the money involved but I do think partially it is down to her body shape, she seems to be attracted to very feminine shapes but is quite square in shape which stiffly tailored feminine tailoring just doesn't play well with.

OP posts:
SophieLion · 06/06/2022 16:16

See I feel sooooo made up if I put lipstick on. But I love the idea of lipstick and love it on other people. I'm always stopping myself buying a new lipstick when I know I will rarely wear it!

Also agree about the transformational aspect of make-up. I find it quite fascinating and very much enjoy watching make-up artists at work. There is one I follow called Andreea Ali. Romanian based in Paris. Think she is excellent.

Hhhmmm never thought about Meghan's body shape. In Suits she always looked great so the fact that her "royal" clothes generally don't look the best had been surprising.

Today I discovered that belt wearing is not good if you're someone who drinks a lot of water and therefore needs to use the bathroom a lot....

Floisme · 06/06/2022 20:04

Well I finally found a pic of Theresa May's outfit but I'm not going to post it cos she looks an absolute bugger. I saw her in some news footage where she was moving so maybe that's why it looks so different now. It's still a nice deep green though. I didn't really look at Meghan's outfit that closely as I was more interested in who she'd be talking to, so I missed all the 'What's she wearing under her coat' business and just thought she looked nice.

And going back to green outfits, I have to say I found the balcony appearance unexpectedly poignant: pretty much handing over to her heirs while the grim reaper waited at her shoulder. I don't suppose we'll see her on that balcony again.

I know what you mean about lipstick Sophie, I used to feel like a 4 year-old playing with my mum's makeup but this lot got me to try it, and now I really like how I can just slap it on in seconds and immediately transform my face.

botemp · 06/06/2022 20:51

I've just read on the live coverage of the Tory vote that Theresa May showed up in a ball gown. Again, no pictures, <harumph> it's like there's some conspiracy surrounding TM and her clothing choices not being shared with the public. You can't just flippantly mention someone showing up in a ball gown and not show it...

I never watched Suits Sophie but iirc from promo images those outfits were a lot sharper (more masculine cuts) and then had some feminine details added to it like peplums or a Roland Mouret style frill to soften it (that mashup of style would probably feel a bit dated now). It's very different to the more New Look style tailoring that is made up of a lot of curved lines to accommodate and accentuate female curves, the original New Look required a corselet underneath to get the immaculate fit and force the body into the desired proportions. I suspect having children will have changed her body somewhat as well.

Redandblue11 · 06/06/2022 22:28

I read that too Bo and no photo …
another link with TM fashion moments
here
I have to admit that there are some good pieces there , some of them very questionable imo (yes that 17 number , amongst another couple), but to my surprise a couple of good ones, not least the first one.

I have to admit, that I would have never imagined myself discussing TM’s fashion.
That is why I love this thread.

@banivani you still there? Made me Google and post royal photos to just go and trot away again?

banivani · 07/06/2022 07:36

You discovered my cunning plan, Red! 😉 No I’ve just been busy and/or exhausted this weekend so my only mumsnetting was engaging with a sporner thread. Needs must.

I dip in and out of the Royal thread but my favourite topic is the why of the clothes and messages etc. and it doesn’t always scratch that itch. Have looked at the photos! Have now spent ten minutes this morning googling Theresa May pics too. Since Flo hates me.

I took the winter coats down to the cellar this weekend for winter storage and the hallway feels lighter for it. That’s it for clothes news I think - except for trying on some jeans on Saturday when running an errand and feeing consumed with hate for clothing companies, sizing, my body. Bloody hell how can it be so hard.

Floisme · 07/06/2022 09:09

A ballgown?? Marvellous.
I must admit I thought Johnson would get more votes than that.

botemp · 07/06/2022 09:25

And some very snazzy bedazzled shoes as well, apparently. The Guardian was speculating whether she was purposefully dressing for the occasion (I so want this to be true) or was just making a stop on a way to an event (who has ball gown worthy events on a Monday evening after the Jubilee Hangover? She definitely dressed for the occasion, surely).

The messaging of dress (especially as related to women historically) is interesting but I've assumed the Royals all dress so boringly to avoid anything being read into it all. Must say I did sort of read Meghan's choice as very safe don't mind me trying to blend in but without all the past dramas it would have just been a run of the mill royal outfit.
