Cod the consumer....... checks out...LIP GLOSS

CodDickinson · 16/11/2007 17:45

ok this a new weekly thread that will be amalgamated into the mail out( i'm told) so we can all have a good ol' shufty at certain products.

Are aiming to change it every week( maybe at the weekend so you cna pop into the shops and have a look yourseves) and subject - wise go from the sublime to the ricidulous.

So whether its nail varnish or Knickers we WILL SUSS IT. Together.. Amen.

what we need is your opinions on ech product and if you are willing to try out a new product then PLEASE join in and buy it( any excuse eh?) and then we will set up some kind of testing parameters.

so this week is lip gloss, we are looking for :

  1. Quality of packaging /10
  2. Colour choice
  3. depth of colour
  4. longevity ( this'll be fun testing this)
5 scent
  1. wow factor - does ANYONE even notice.

so that out of 60.

Im going to buy a mid range one i think - maybe Boirjois to get us off to a start.

If you are doing an existing one please look at the colour choices as they are now, not when you bought it in 1992.

EW.

would like a thread on concealer.
would also like a thread on eye creams
am feeling haggard and blotchy today, can you tell?

JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 18:02

Am I allowed to buy L'oreal - think I'll go for Maybelline I feel safe there as I used their Mascara once - you can see this is hard for me, can't you?

nutcracker · 16/11/2007 18:02

I brought a cheapy one the other day, can review that if you like ??

pooka · 16/11/2007 18:06

www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk/gp/product/B000JJH438/sr=1-20/qid=1195236163/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&n=488450 31&bcBrand=core

I use this.
Would rate it:

  1. 8/10 quality of packaging
  2. 1/10 colour choice (there is only one)
  3. 3/10 depth of colour
  4. 6/10 longevity
  5. 9/10 scent
  6. 0/10 wow factor

Equals 27 paltry points. However, the low scores are actually the things I like. Don't want wow or massive depth of colour. Don't really do lip colour. Thinks have stumbled into wrong place.

pooka · 16/11/2007 18:07

Oh god - suppose it isn't really lip GLOSS, but more or a balmy tinty thing. Sorry. Will get my coat.

JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2007 18:17

Well there you are you see - that's what I think I need Pooka. But they're making me do Maybelline .

OliviaMumsnet · 16/11/2007 18:18

ooh presume you all know that Bourjois is made by Chanel
Their nail varnishes are ACE imo.

TheBlonde · 16/11/2007 18:21

No7 - looks like Lancome, similar tube etc
Glue like, horrid, would not recommend

OliviaMumsnet · 16/11/2007 18:31

Elizabeth Arden Lip Tint in plum
41/60

  1. Quality of packaging 8/10
Comes in a dull white box and winds up like a lipstick
  1. Colour choice - 6/10
Only five colours I think: berry honey blush plum and "clear"
  1. depth of colour 8/10
Very deep and in emergencies have been known to use as blusher in "2 in 1" Nadine Baggott-style slimline makeup bag.
  1. longevity 8/10 Haven't done a snog-a-thon test as DH hates all lipstick but it lasts well and keeps my lips all soft at the same time.

5 scent - 4/10 - smells like 8 hour cream - rather medicinal.

  1. wow factor - does ANYONE even notice. 7/10
It's a great colour which adds shine to lips without the stickiness that a usual gloss can bring.

Justine, you should get some, though they may not sell it in Tesco

OliviaMumsnet · 16/11/2007 18:32

Olivia wonders whether maybe she is taking this all too seriously.
Cod, are you really BBQing now??!

scattyspice · 16/11/2007 18:35

CodDickinson · 16/11/2007 18:38

OP posts:
pooka · 16/11/2007 18:43

Get it next time you're in the smoke Justine. I really like it. But then I'm not much of a make-upper.

bagpuss · 16/11/2007 18:45

OK, I'm in, off to get my make up bag, BRB.....

Botbot · 16/11/2007 18:51

Right, I'll do the cheapy shite.

(Disclaimer - I do have a Juicy Tube and Benetint, but they've both been done).

My one is H&M own brand. Colour doesn't have a name, but is translucent pale pink.

  1. Quality of packaging - 2/10. It's a tube. Silver top looks nice with the pink, but it's essentially cheapy.
  1. Colour choice 1/10 - only comes in one colour I think (or was when I bought it).
  1. Depth of colour 3/10 - there's hardly any colour, but that's not what I bought it for.
  1. Longevity 8/10 - not bad at all.
  1. Scent 5/10 - as in there is no scent, so it's neither good nor bad.
  1. Wow Factor - dunno really. No one has noticed, but then it is clear.
  1. Usefulness for giving to DD to chew the end of to stop her nicking the rest of my makeup while I'm applying it in the morning: 10/10.

that's it.

If only Constance Carroll roll-on lip gloss in Cola still existed. That was the queen of cheapy lip glosses. Did the job for me, age 15, and cost about 50p.

CodDickinson · 16/11/2007 18:52

LOL at " coloru choice" - one

OP posts:
CodDickinson · 16/11/2007 18:52

nad rofl at constance carroll - name change?

OP posts:
Botbot · 16/11/2007 18:54

Codstance Carroll then?

mintydixcharrington · 16/11/2007 18:58

OK I have several
Clinique Lip pumping gloss in Glamour-full (as recommended to me by a Celebridee Makeup artist no less)

  1. Quality of packaging 8/10 its fine, applicator is good, pretty dull otherwise, basic clinique
  2. Colour choice I don't know, I just bought the one he put on me. It is a really nice natural sort of same-as-your-lips-but-better colour
  3. depth of colour good
  4. longevity ( this'll be fun testing this) yes it lasts quite long
5 scent not that I'm aware of
  1. wow factor - does ANYONE even notice. it isn't really a wow-y one, it is just a really good staple. I use it a lot when I'm not wearing makeup, IYKWIM. Will buy another when this runs out

Nars lip gloss in Bilitis

  1. Quality of packaging 5/10 its fine, just not that interesting and a bit of a cheap feeling plastic
  2. Colour choice ?can't remember. Mine is quite a deep red
  3. depth of colour quite deep
  4. longevity ( this'll be fun testing this) yes has a bit of a lip stain thing going on
5 scent no
  1. wow factor - does ANYONE even notice. yes, it is quite deep red so an eveningy one. Not entirely convinced that deep red in a gloss is the way forward mind you. also a bit sticky. generally wouldn't buy it again.

Chanel Cristalle Gloss in 18

  1. Quality of packaging 10/10 of course. It's Chanel!
  2. Colour choice excellent. This one is a slightly orangey golden brown (sounds foul but is v nice). Particularly good in the summer with a bit of a tan.
  3. depth of colour perfect. not too deep, not too sheer
  4. longevity ( this'll be fun testing this) well its a gloss, but it lasts pretty well for that
5 scent no
  1. wow factor - does ANYONE even notice. yes lots of people have said they like it. Will peruse the chanel counter again and buy a different colour next time.
mintydixcharrington · 16/11/2007 18:59

oh sorry didn't do all the x/10s
lets just say overall clinique a good 50/60, Nars more like 30/60, Chanel 58/60

bagpuss · 16/11/2007 19:02

OK, mine have already been done I think.

Juicy Tubes in Pamplemousse and Fresh (think that one has been discontinued).

Clinique Colour Surge Impossibly Glossy in Sugarplum and Braisin (both of which seem no longer to be on the Clinique website - surely these cannot have gone too, I only bought mine a few months ago).

I may be back with another over the weekend depending on where we end up (i.e. near a shop or not), a shame really as I did John Lewis earlier today.

If you need lip balm advice I have six of those (including benetint) to test.

mintydixcharrington · 16/11/2007 19:03

Oh also have Juicy Lubes in "Fresh" which is brand new (as of Wed). My hairdresser gave it to me for buying so many Kerestase products

  1. Quality of packaging 8/10 Fun, nice applicator, more of a lip salve than a gloss in a way
  2. Colour choice there are loads of these aren't there? 8/10
  3. depth of colour well it is basically not much colour at all - v sheer 6/10
  4. longevity ( this'll be fun testing this) no, comes off pretty quickly 6/10
5 scent a bit pongy - but OK I guess. I prefer unscented 6/10
  1. wow factor - does ANYONE even notice. Not in a million years. Well no more than vaseline 2/10

36/60. I think I'll stick it in my 9 yo dds xmas stocking!

pooka · 16/11/2007 19:08

nars bilitis sounds like an unfortunate willy complaint to me, pph.

bagpuss · 16/11/2007 19:10

I thought that too
