Aibu to return to the perfume of my youth?

This dates my youth to early eighties I think but the only perfume I've ever truly adored was Anais Anais. I'm now 54. And I can conjure the scent in y imagination. Is it the fragrance version of mutton dressed as lamb if I wore it now?

Try it and see how you feel. I passed a woman my age (50) wearing white musk the other day, which has to be scent of her youth - and it just made me want to go and get some of my own. Didn’t feel in any way too young for her!

msflibble · 12/09/2020 19:19

I think it's fine! I don't often wear perfume, but I bought old bottles of my 2 favourite (sadly discontinued) perfumes a couple of years ago and wearing them always feels right. I don't think Anais is a "young" scent. I think it's timeless.

Maireas · 12/09/2020 19:22

That was my favourite perfume in the 80s as well! It had such a pretty bottle. Treat yourself!

Dreamersandwishers · 12/09/2020 19:24

It was a big favourite with my mum, even in her 80s. I still think of her if I smell it. Truly lovely.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/09/2020 19:26

Don't. Only because it's mostly likely been reformulated and it's nothing like the one you used to like.

Speaking from bitter experience here.

TheoneandObi · 12/09/2020 19:29

@ChardonnaysPetDragon oh no!! 🤦‍♀️

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/09/2020 19:32

Oh sorry, I might have mislead you, I realise.

My experience is not with AnaisAnais, so give it a try, but honestly, nothing has been safe from reformulations recently.

Maireas · 12/09/2020 19:33

It smells the same to me now as it did about 40 years ago! I bought some for my sister, she was thrilled!

TheoneandObi · 12/09/2020 19:33

Phew ok
I'll take a sniff first then. Although I wonder if testing isn't a bit tricky at the moment

Rive Gauche for me. Appeals to those of a similar age!

Timinfuckingruislip · 12/09/2020 19:34

Oh I’d forgotten AnaisAnais - May get a bottle myself

TheoneandObi · 12/09/2020 19:36

My friends at the time were divided between Anais Anais, Dune, Poison and Rive Gauche wearers!

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/09/2020 19:38

LouLou for me. I still love it, and Rive Gauche.

Maireas · 12/09/2020 19:40

I used to love Rive Gauche. That blue and black bottle. Poison was a bit strong, I felt. I liked Dune and Givenchy III. Also Caleche.

Dollywilde · 12/09/2020 19:41

I’m younger (31) but Rive Gauche was my go to scent when I first wore proper perfume. I thought it made me smell dead grown up.

I’m now pretty much a one scent woman (Chanel #5) but this thread is making me want to run out and buy a bottle! That or a Charlie or So... body spray Grin

katy1213 · 12/09/2020 19:42

I'd forgotten Rive Gauche - that would bring back memories! I don't think of Anais Anais as a young scent - almost the opposite, my mum wore it into her 80s.
Do they still make Kiku?

JuniperSling · 12/09/2020 19:43

I did this ~ bought a bottle of Chanel 19 for my 50th and it just doesn't smell the same any more :( Not sure whether it's just me that's changed or the actual perfume, but I was very disappointed.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 12/09/2020 19:43

I think they did reformulate Anais Anais but then brought the original back IIRC.

Maireas · 12/09/2020 19:45

Kiku was in that lovely yellow bottle. When I was a teenager I liked Havoc by Mary Quant. Isn't it funny how perfumes bring back memories?

Floralnomad · 12/09/2020 19:46

I’m the same age and I’ve done this in the last couple of years but I’m a Rive Gauche wearer , My late SIL loved Anais Anais , so it always makes me think of her .

ApolloandDaphne · 12/09/2020 19:48

That was my favourite perfume too. I wore it when I got married in 1985. I would love to revisit it.

FlippinNoah · 12/09/2020 19:50

46 here and still unashamedly wear White Musk from time to time

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/09/2020 19:52

I liked that as a teenager too. The perfume I associate most strongly with my youth is Cerruti 1881 though.

MarshaBradyo · 12/09/2020 19:52

Ah these names take me back

EBearhug · 12/09/2020 19:56

You were wise to go for something which hasn't been discontinued...
