Aibu to return to the perfume of my youth?

This dates my youth to early eighties I think but the only perfume I've ever truly adored was Anais Anais. I'm now 54. And I can conjure the scent in y imagination. Is it the fragrance version of mutton dressed as lamb if I wore it now?

OP posts:

You should go for it. I loved Anais Anais too - it was my first ‘posh’ perfume as a teenager and I treasured it, but find it gives me a headache now sadly. One word of warning though - I have noticed that pregnancy, post partum and menopause all affect your body chemistry so some perfumes, even if not reformulated, can smell very different to the way you remember.

FelicityPike · 12/09/2020 20:02

AnaisAnais, CKone, Dewberry & White Musk from the Body Shop and Exclamat!on for me.

EvelynBeatrice · 12/09/2020 20:04

Someone mentioned Cerrutti 1881 which I loved too. Unfortunately that’s another one that now gives me a sinus headache! However, Elizabeth Arden White Tea (the original one , not a flanker) smells almost identical and is lovely.
Like the OP I too have an age related perfume dilemma. I keep looking at Estée Lauder Youth Dew wistfully as I love the smell but am wondering if it is too ageing ...

NoProblem123 · 12/09/2020 20:05

If you’re getting some of that, I’m getting myself a bottle of Tribe !

I loved it - everyone else hated it, but now I’m passed caring what others think anyway Grin

woodhill · 12/09/2020 20:07

I used to love Anais Anais in the 80s and White Linen by Estée Lauder

ApolloandDaphne · 12/09/2020 20:08

Oh gosh I loved White Linen too!

custardbear · 12/09/2020 20:08

Classics are
Fine!instill love Mademioselle coco and Prada ... and still wear them, as well as the Tiffany fragrance which I also love -
Worn all of those for years!

SpeedofaSloth · 12/09/2020 20:10

This takes me back. I loved LouLou and Anais Anais.

WellTidy · 12/09/2020 20:11

I bought the perfume of my youth last summer. It was Ocean Dream by Giorgio, and it had a little pearl on the bottle. I loved it then and I was really happy wearing it last summer too!

Maireas · 12/09/2020 20:12

Estee Lauder - White Linen always smelled do lovely and fresh. I liked Private Collection as well.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 12/09/2020 20:16

Samsara in the winter since I was 17. Clarins in the red bottle for summer for many years now. Gio D’acua in my twenties, but I won’t buy that again as my ex used to buy it for me. Noa by Cacherel possibly. 4711 definitely.

LaChatte · 12/09/2020 20:21

Going through old boxes of stuff in the garage recently I found an old bottle of Monsoon perfume, took me straight back to 1994!

FinallyHere · 12/09/2020 20:28

Givenchy III (sigh)

Remember the first time I smelt it. Walking through perfume counters with my mother and elder sister. I was just beginning to be interested in make up and stuff. A demonstrator stepped to offer me a spray of Givenchy III. First time they had ever targeted me rather than my sister or mother.

And she was right, I loved it, they liked it on me but not in themselves.

Often wonder whether that was just a coincidence or something more woo-woo

As for the travesty that was the reformulated version, the less said the better.

misscockerspaniel · 12/09/2020 20:34

I still wear White Linen!

woodhill · 12/09/2020 20:36

Can you still buy it?

ohffs66 · 12/09/2020 20:36

I'm.still wearing Exclamation and white musk Blush. The one I really miss is Deci Dela by Nina Ricci, can't get it anywhere at all many more (apart from the 1 bottle on Amazon for £414!!)

DameCelia · 12/09/2020 20:36

@FinallyHere totally with you on the reformulation, complete travesty.
@Maireas wow, private collection, haven't thought of that in years! I was 20, why was I wearing a perfume suited to a 40 year old woman??? Ditto Samsara, which gave me a migraine every single time, but I still wore it 🙄. Also used to love an Estee Lauder or possibly Elizabeth Arden perfume called (I think) Alize,.

FinallyHere · 12/09/2020 20:39

@DameCelia 🙁

p.s. love your name

DameCelia · 12/09/2020 20:42

Grin @FinallyHere, I haven't strangled any moles for a very long time. The other heavy hitter perfume I was trying to remember was Alliage.

equuscaballus · 12/09/2020 20:49

The beauty of perfume is that it can be worn by anyone! its a matter of taste.

However perfume fashions change and it is not a modern scent, think of it as a classic!

FWIW Its beautiful. My mother was never without a bottle, she wore it into her 60s (but not exclusively)

Buy some! its not expensive - but you must do a smell check first to avoid being disappointed.
Our tastes evolve and reformulations occur with depressing regularity in the perfume industry.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 12/09/2020 20:50

Does anyone remember Ma Griffe perfume?

Strawberrycreamsundae · 12/09/2020 20:53

My favourites were Apple Blossom (Helena Rubinstein)
Fidji (Guy la Roche)
Rive Gauche (still wear it)
Aqua Manda
Alliage

Maireas · 12/09/2020 20:56

I used to love Ma Griffe!!
Aqua Manda, very orangey. Nice bottle.

choppolata · 12/09/2020 20:57

Blasé! I got a sample with a magazine (Mizz?) at an impressionable age Smile

Florial · 12/09/2020 20:57

Ma Griffe, very fresh and green. My colleague wore it back in the day. I wore mostly Coco (which has definitely been reformulated, it's a shadow of it's 80s self). Another girl wore Calvin Klein Obsession.

Jeez our office must have reeked!
