Aibu to return to the perfume of my youth?

TheoneandObi · 12/09/2020 19:13

This dates my youth to early eighties I think but the only perfume I've ever truly adored was Anais Anais. I'm now 54. And I can conjure the scent in y imagination. Is it the fragrance version of mutton dressed as lamb if I wore it now?

Some ingredients have been outlawed because of health and safety. Oak moss for example has been alleged to cause allergies.

Other ingredients have been changed for cost reasons. Other reformulations happened because public tastes have changes, look up the Miss Dior saga.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 13/09/2020 16:15

My first fragrance was Fleur D'Interdite by Givenchy. I think I was about 14? I would love to be able to buy it now, the sense of smell is the most 'reminiscing' of the senses, and I bet it would take me right back to 1995.

I also wore Nina Ricci Les Belles de Ricci and then Lancome's Poeme for several years. I sat next to a woman on the bus recently wearing it and it took me right back. I did so many naughty things wearing that scent.

I've enjoyed reading all your perfume throwbacks

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/09/2020 16:15

The bottom line is, everything has been tinkered with.

Crystal87 · 13/09/2020 16:15

My husband's 83 year old nan wears it and my grandma who was 85 when she died used to wear it all the time, so I will always think of it as an older woman's scent. I do like strong scents though my favourites are Dior Pure Poison and Avon Far Away.

VinylDetective · 13/09/2020 16:16

@WitsEnding

Rive Gauche for me. Appeals to those of a similar age!
Me too. My son says it smells of mum and buys it for me.
Deathraystare · 13/09/2020 16:20

Do they still make Kiku?

No I don't think they do. That was by Faberge. Mum had Kiku and I had Xanadu I think it was called.

Other than that I often go back to perfumes from my past Elizabeth Arden's Blue Grass (A Chypre) is a favourite. I love Guerlain Mitsouko but it is another that has been tinkered with so not sure what it smell slike now.

Madame Rochas and Femme by Rochas - although there is something I hate in there - Tuberose!

Ma Griffe

Hermes Caleche

Lancome Magie Noir

O de Lancome

Prince matchebelli Cachet

When I was young (80s) every young teen reeked of Dewberry and older women Poison or Paris. They practically knocked you sideways. I found them too much!

White Linen was weird. Smelt divinely sophisticated on some people. Like toilet freshener on others Confused

woodhill · 13/09/2020 17:22

I still wear O de Lancome, great Summer perfume

Remember wearing Chloe and Jontu,,Panache was another popular teen scent in navy packaging

Knittingnanny · 13/09/2020 17:23

Not sure it was l’aimant
I’ve googled again and think it might have been moondrop

GetThatHelmetOn · 13/09/2020 17:25

I went back to Charlie and hated it Grin

But I am still partial to Panthere of Cartier and Sunflowers but don’t tell anyoneBlush

DeeDimer · 13/09/2020 17:28

Poison and LuLu for me. Do they still sell them?

tobee · 13/09/2020 17:35

Or was it Opium and not Paris???

DianaT1969 · 13/09/2020 17:36

You've inspired me to get some too.
Might revisit Tresor, LouLou and Armarni Elle while I'm trying.

muckandnettles · 13/09/2020 17:40

Fidji by Guy Laroche. A family friend bought me that when I was 14 and I felt so grown up. I haven't smelt it in years but it would definitely take me back...

BitOfFun · 13/09/2020 17:47

@TheSeedsOfADream

Just reading up on Anaïs Anaïs. The one with "originale" on the bottle is a reformulation of the original original (with me so far? Grin) and is almost a direct copy of it with only a slight tweak to keep in with the 2003 guidelines and restrictions. There is also Anaïs Anaïs without the word originale on the packaging which is the first reformulation of the original but which smells really cloying and sweet. (I mistakenly bought that before finding out the importance of the "originale" word! ) So "originale" is the third version but nearer to the first than than the second was.
I looked up what I'd ordered, really to panic cancel, but it says Originale, so I'm really happy for the heads-up, thanks!
Vicliz24 · 13/09/2020 17:48

I adored Fidji and wore poison all the way through the 80s . Another one I remember well was Foxfire by Avon . That was my handbag scent . Would love to smell Fidji again ....

Livpool · 13/09/2020 17:50

I'm 40 and bought LouLou a few months ago. Loved it x

ABCDay · 13/09/2020 17:52

I haven't RTFT so apologies if this has been mentioned already it won't have been, does anyone remember Babe? I loved that, when I was at school Grin . I'm pleased to say my tastes have matured somewhat.

TheSeedsOfADream · 13/09/2020 18:11

I think Babe was Fabergé as well.
I coveted a Kiku talcum powder ball thing. Never got one. Sad

TheSeedsOfADream · 13/09/2020 18:12

@WhatamessIgotinto, if you're going for Ysatis, you'll need eBay too. The monstrosity in the purple packaging isn't worthy of the name!

pandora206 · 13/09/2020 18:17

I too loved Anais Anais in my youth but when I was given some a couple of years ago I found it overly heavy and sweet.

Reading this thread has also reminded me of Laura Ashley No.1 which was reformulated (without success) and of course is now obsolete. I even found some remnants of the original on Etsy for huge prices....... Shame.

The other fragrance I wore around the same time was Chanel Cristalle. Not sure if it would be my choice now but it would be nostalgic to smell it again. Interestingly my 'tastes' in fragrance seem to have have lightened over the years (I was never into Poison and Opium) to the chypre/aquatic groups.

EspressoX10 · 13/09/2020 18:42

These names take me back!

I remember my first boyfriend wearing Christian Dior Fahrenheit.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/09/2020 18:47

Fidgi for me. I bought a bottle in 1977 and loved it. I was tempted by a vintage bottle on eBay but resisted. Then in the 90s it was Ginger by CtG. I’ve got a tiny bit left and I eke it out when I feel very old.

Wiredforsound · 13/09/2020 19:30

I still wear White Linen and Paloma Picasso (always reminds me of big student Friday nights out).

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/09/2020 20:25

Oh Chloe too in the 80s. My sister worked for Elizabeth Arden (who had a connection to Chloe) and we got all sorts of stuff free. My daughter started wearing it about 5 years ago, and although it’s not quite the same, I had a real Proustian moment.
DH used to wear Chanel for Gentlemen, which I still love, but wore L’ogotiste(sp) during us having a bad patch. I still hate it.
