Bloomed i has in mind something like this when I thought of culottes to balance out the top, could be in other materials but just the idea. Not sure if your kind of thing?

red, you're right, I definitely find culottes and a-line skirts work well with an inverted triangle. They can be quite tailored if your body is fluctuating though, as Bloomed said. I was trying to wait and decide on the ones I bought from anthropologie, but ended up wearing them all day Saturday instead, Grin. They look great with both a loose top over and a more fitted, longer top.

I replaced an old pair of aviators with a Polaroid pair from tkmaxx, today. I've decided that cheap sunglasses are not worth it, but I'm not sure high end ones last any better than mid price ones. The old ones were Armani, the screw came out the arm and the lense has scratched, so not worth mending.

BloomedAgain · 08/07/2019 17:09

Interesting! I've never owned culottes but must look into them. The issue is that my weight fluctuation hits my tummy and torso, with my legs remaining the same, so culottes may add width at my narrowest point, but I'll try some and see. A line dresses might work. I'd like an a line leather skirt for winter.
I have a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses I found in TK Maxx a few years ago. Couldn't believe my luck!

BloomedAgain · 08/07/2019 17:33

Might have a go at this knot front dress

red I have a pair of Grensons from years ago which still look good.

quirkychick · 08/07/2019 18:14

Nice dress, Bloomed, very similar to the Jigsaw one I'm wearing today. Mine is sleeveless and a darker petrol blue. I find it very useful as you can wear it with bare legs sandals/trainers in summer and tights, boots and cardi or jacket in spring or autumn. The culottes I linked upthread are reduced to £27 before postage and I find the high waist actually holds me in.

My armani broken sunglasses were a "bargain" from tkmaxx, I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

banivani · 08/07/2019 21:36

I was worried when you started talking knot front dresses because I pictured a much frumpier style - the kind people wear to very obviously camouflage things. That’s the trouble with camouflage - it highlights that you are looking to hide something. Angry bane of my life. 😂

My middle daughter is going to be in Stockholm tomorrow so I’m sending her to get the rayon shirt dress in Uniqlo. Grin Oh and I forgot to update - I tried the Airism bra vests and was impressed with them but I think I’ll hold off for now, am unsure of the need. I recently tried on a “normal” camisole with a lace front and decided I didn’t want one, the spindly bits of the lace felt like spider legs on my chest so I’m cured for now Grin

Redandblue11 · 09/07/2019 10:09

Well Bani 🕷 are not a comfy feeling so I doubt that I will be able to wear lacy camisoles now . Cannot get that out of my head Shock

I hope to hear soon that the rayon dress you are after is a success.

Redandblue11 · 11/07/2019 08:10

Did you get the dress Bani?
Today I have a pair of Grensons and a pair of shoe embassy black ankle boots arriving, from the sale and I am hoping I love one of them.

I saw this article on the times re basic summer sandals. You get a weekly free article, so I decided to “use” mine in important stuff such as reading about flip flops. Except for the Birkenstocks... I am baffled as I would not consider flip flops that basic other than beach/garden occasional pop 10 min down the road type stuff as they are to me very impractical to wear in a city and/or public transport.
Btw - did you get the birks Bani? I do like them tbh and they are very comfortable imo.
What I am admiring in that article is the photo of Thora Valdimrs in that saffron robe ... with those flip flops she is a bit of Tibetean monk look, but I am drawn to that look , not sure —I am sure in fact— I could pull that off.
Hope the link works

quirkychick · 11/07/2019 14:36

I think bani ought to write the fashion articles, much more truthful and much funnier than some of the ridiculous gumpf that's published Grin.

The shoes sound good, red. My navy birks are several years old but pretty indestructible. I bought them when I had foot issues and they're very supportive, bani.

Redandblue11 · 11/07/2019 19:19

I agree quirky! Bani would be a good read.

Well, I am keeping The Shoe Embassy black ankle boots, they are what it says on the tin plain black ankle boots. But they look very well constructed and are very comfortable AND look good.
Unfortunately the grenson ones are also good quality but they have these white marks over them as if someone had tried to clean them and left strikes Confused clearly a factory fault of some sort, is a shame as they look good quality but I cannot be bothered to exchange, when the other pair seems perfect for me.

banivani · 11/07/2019 19:50

Grin I can only string two paragraphs together at best so a career change to fashion journalism is perhaps not the best choice Wink

Although I’ve always been attracted to newspaper columns. The original me me me that has now been taken over by social media. Oh to be a quarter page worth of scathing once a week or month. I’d be even better at that if I could be allowed no deadlines. Grin

I did get the dress! My daughter dutifully brought it home for me. It’s hanging in the flat, but we took a day trip on the ferry to Åland like proper Swedes today. It’s a whole thing here. If you ever want to do an anthropological study on Swedes it’s a good place to start. Anyway the boat had an outlet shop and I tried on a pair of Toms and was surprised at how comfortable they were. Good sole! Wasn’t swayed because they only had hot pink in my size but I’ll remember to keep an eye out. I have not got Birkies and I’m not convinced when I try them on in shops. I either have ugly feet (possible) or just don’t like my feet in them. I’m not going to look any more. This summer has been shit weather wise so far Angry so I haven’t needed new shoes. And I’ll make do with what I have on holiday.

We were talking on the ferry and my daughters said that the younger is coming over to help the elder clear out her wardrobe. The elder wants less clutter and only stuff she wears and the younger is ace at that. She said her friends come to hers, look at her wardrobe, and comment that they’ve seen her in all the clothes she has because she wears everything she buys. Quite a role model! Don’t know where she gets it from Blush not me...!

Redandblue11 · 12/07/2019 14:11

Excellent Bani! Glad you happy with your dress. Show ilus a pic when you can.

So, I got two dresses that I am trying to decide if I keep any. A Hobbs (navy) and a Somerset Alice Temperley.
I would like them to be usable for work or for non work going for a drink / meeting up people etc. So basically a basic type dress.
The navy one (might look black but is navy) is in a lovely soft and light fabric. Not sure you can see but the skirt has a panel at the bottom which gives it a bit more flare.
The animal print one , I quite like it on BUT when I see the photo of it I see a mass of print (borderline frumpsville as Bo would say), interesting as I did not see that when I see myself in front of mirror. How does it come across to you in the photos?

I like the second one better, red, but maybe with a button or two undone, I think it hangs better.

bani short and pithy fashion writing is definitely preferable to some of the waffly rubbish that gets spouted Grin.

Floisme · 12/07/2019 15:43

I think the navy dress looks nice but the animal print, although it doesn't quite work at the moment, would be more interesting / modern if you could fix whatever it is that isn't working - if that makes any sense at all!

Like quirky says, it may just be the neckline. Buttoned up is probably more modern at the moment but I think it's harder to carry off.

BloomedAgain · 12/07/2019 15:53

Pity about the Grensons red
I like the cut of the navy dress but agree that the Temperley might work better unbuttoned.

Redandblue11 · 12/07/2019 16:18

makes perfect sense the comments! I knew something about the neckline, thing is that I was trying to unbutton , but maybe as is new the neckline would not do anything different but just stay up. Maybe is because is new so the fabric is well pressed.
But I will try again over the weekend to see if I can make it work.
As a weekend dressI would wear trainers with it.
Thinking if a thin leather belt kinda knotted would work too.

banivani · 12/07/2019 16:35

Is it not partly the sleeve length of the print one that makes it frumpier? I suffer a bit with this since I am larger and self-consciously wear a lot of sleeves that length and can often tell that sleeveless would have been funkier. Otherwise I can see why you like the pattern but it doesn’t come across that well in the photos, no. But I think it might be in combination with the style of the dress. It’s not my favourite kind of print to be honest, I hate animal prints and can tolerate that more subdued kind but I never find them that cool, always a bit dowdy if I’m brutally honest. My younger daughter wears it though haha I keep my mouth shut then.

Redandblue11 · 12/07/2019 16:43

Just saw that when I wrote trainers the mumsnet site linked it ... Hmm
Not sure what to think of that. I did not do that , intentionally at least

Yep Bani you are always brutally honest here. That is why I want a column written by you Grin

Redandblue11 · 12/07/2019 16:44

Is done it again!! Confused

banivani · 12/07/2019 16:53

Bo can write the proper fashion articles and I can just be bitchy and make off the cuff comments, in my unpolished shoes and scratched glasses Wink

XingMing · 12/07/2019 16:58

Succumbed in M&S' sale. Two pairs of low ball-heeled suede mules in black and salmon. £20 each. Comfortable, dainty and rather elegant. But no longer on the website.

banivani · 12/07/2019 19:22

What does ball-heeled mean?

All your talk of mules have made me quite fancy a pair. The ones you lot posted pictures of before we’re nice - Bo had some lovely ones with tassels right? Dare not mess with the plantar fasciitis at the moment though.

Attaching pics (made eldest daughter snap photos). My double chin comes up a treat I notice. 🙄 With belt and without. Sandals are old and birkenstockish. I like the way there’s less toe on show, but am not always sure I love white and my feet get tired in them. Ideally the heel would be a little more cushioned.

Redandblue11 · 12/07/2019 19:49

Bani I like the dress! I think with the belt a bit more off centered will be better.
Have you also tried with a leather belt? Might also work.
To be honest the dark of the dress against the white of sandals give it an edge that I like. Quite modern.

I was going to ask the same about ball heeled ...
and I am the same as you I was thinking about mules ... all o have bought in the show department is those ankle boots which she A/W .
Xing we want to see your purchases! You did well Smile

quirkychick · 12/07/2019 20:52

red, I also think the Temperley dress sits on your waist better. Though, I like the style of the Hobbs dress, I'm not sure it fits you so well.

Nice dress, bani, I think the belt either slightly to the side or slightly looser might work.

Are mn going to put links to lots of random clothes items, now?
