No Spend on S&B during June - Anyone In?

Valsoldknickers · 30/05/2015 11:41

Is anyone up for not spending money on unnecessary S&B items for the month of June?

My finances are not in good order Sad. I did a 'no spend' couple of months with other MNetters (online and lurking) last year. It was bliss to get a credit card bill afterwards with an almost zero balance. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders (albeit temporarily)!

I have enough of everything - hair dye, moisturiser, clothes (if I shifted a few pounds), etc. Any other spending would just be on frivolous crap if I were to continue as I have been doing!

Roll on 1st June, I am tightening the purse strings and hiding my credit card! Come and join the fun ConfusedGrin

I find eBay is still best - have tried Facebook selling pages but haven't tried gumtree. I make sure I post stuff in batches to minimise post office trips

iwantgin · 20/06/2015 18:08

I'm still in. Had my hair done yesterday but am not counting that.

Only 10 days to go!)but still don't really need or want anything)

Twinklestar2 · 21/06/2015 08:35

I'm still here!

I brought a pair of sunglasses but only because mine broke and I had had them for about 10 years! £10 from marks and sparks.

Frugal - I agree. The fashions out there are terrible at the moment!

AmethystMoon · 22/06/2015 08:10

Bought another top but I crappily justified it as it was from Tu and so cheap and will be useful on my up coming camping holiday. I am rubbish at this. However I have spent significantly less on S&B things than in a normal month. I have been shocked at the number of times I found myself about to just pick things up. I now think more carefully and am using up products I have and wearing the clothes I have. In daft I have been ashamed at how much I have I had forgotten about.
I seem to live in the same few easy throw on outfits when I am not at work. Then all the nice things sit there forgotten and unworn. I need to start selling the things I won't wear and don't need so I can actually see the rest to be able to wear it!

Greenstone · 22/06/2015 10:11

Hi everyone!

I haven't made a single S&B purchase yet in June Shock this is really unheard of. I'm pleased with how well I'm doing. Agree that I'm not tempted by anything in the shops at the moment, because it's all so summery and where I am we just don't get much heat so what's the point? I have a few tried and trusted summer looks which I am happy to revolve during any good weather.

Frugal, we're also gearing up for a house move imminently! It's a good incentive to not buy shite - apart from anything else we're pretty broke and will be funneling all spare change into the new house. I'm hoping for a very low-spend July and August as well, with the result that I can justifiably update my A/W wardrobe come September after a long stint of pregnancy/breastfeeding. I'll need a couple of pairs of new trousers, several new T-shirts, underwear, and a sweater or two. And if I have the money (which I won't, really :(), a new, good winter coat.

So there's my incentive - save now, get to spend on nice good clothes that I'll actually get to wear!

Good luck everyone. It hasn't been too hard for me but I nearly booked a brow tidy/lash tint for this weekend before catching myself. I want it but it can wait...

Greenstone · 22/06/2015 10:17

Oh and re. selling. I found a wedding forum with some good selling pages and I'm considering trying to sell a couple of dresses I have - a beautiful tea dress by RED Valentino, NEVER WORN, that could be a stunning bridesmaid dress, and a pale pink J Crew silk chiffon gown from the bridesmaid section that I actually wore for my own wedding. I'm not sure if I'm 100% ready to sell on my wedding dress (what if my daughters or nieces want to play with it/wear it in the future?!) but in any case, I think I'd do better there than on the likes of Ebay.

RavioliOnToast · 22/06/2015 12:55

I just failed miserably, and I just remembered another fail earlier in the month, just bought hairdressing and a hair mask cause I've ran out. and about a week ago I bought bronzer, brow pencil, fake tan, nail Polish, blusher, powder. all in the same day.Angry

AmethystMoon · 24/06/2015 10:28

Totally forgot no spend yesterday and picked up two St tropez shower gradual tans on offer. They've been out of stock for ages and I was so excited I just grabbed and paid Hmm
Not giving up though as I need to cut back and I have definitely spent less than I would have in a normal month.
Need to start ebaying again too.

Greenstone · 24/06/2015 10:55

Have you tried out the St Tropez yet Amethyst? Report back!

I think DD really needs some new shoes - she's living in Crocs at the moment but her sturdy 'good' shoes look a little bit small. Will probably leave it to the weekend to get some though.

Money is really tight at the minute so a good incentive to not be spendy, but I feel a bit of an itch coming on to get something that I don't need and will never get to wear. I won't, but it's mad how much of an addiction it is!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/06/2015 11:31

Well we're nearly in the last days of June and I have to report.......................................................................................................................

No Spend June was an utter Non here Blush

In My Defence:

June is my birthday so I got some special offers sent.
I bought some Summer clothes (because I won't find them in July/August and I won't be in the mood to go round the shops then)

I'm talking 5-6 tops (alll under £10) a pair of shorts and two pairs of sandles.

New "They're Real" colour mascara.
Some BodyShop stuff for my birthday.

(Might try a No Spend July instead).......................

mirpuppet · 25/06/2015 12:18

Still haven't spent anything.

I've found it easy as I've stayed out of shops and I try to rememebr how brief summer is in the UK. MAximum I need 14 high summer outfits and I have them. May buy something trendy to update in July before going away.

Hope evreyone else is doing well.

Valsoldknickers · 25/06/2015 12:24

OP here, fail Blush

Had to buy holiday stuff. Last time I was in the sun I wore maternity and previously I was at my Slimming World target Sad

Probably shouldn't have picked the month before holidays to try to abstain!

Congrats to the rest of you though!

I might try again in August (like last year)....

Absolute fail for me too.

I'm moving to a country with no decent online shopping and will be living in the middle of nowhere, so I will have a No Spend rest of the year Grin

More than making up for it before I go.

Val, I'll join you for August.

FrugalFashionista · 25/06/2015 12:49

I had made that one beauty purchase (BHA pads) - turns out I didn't need it as my stuck Korean order arrived. Otherwise, nada.

Feels great - I tend to fritter away my money, this month has been a welcome break and I have had to take a pause before buying anything. I've had a couple of quick shopping urges but have managed to get rid of them by thinking that I can make the purchase in July if I want to. I no longer do - my urges are always quickly replaced by others and this is why shopping never fully satisfies me.

Not sure how I should continue: a no-buy or lo-buy? Or one in, one out? Or a monthly quota? Would like to continue this in some form...

Itsalldramarama · 25/06/2015 13:31

Still here :) had hair coloured but it was no spend as daughter is a hairdresser :) down to dregs of cleanser and cutting nip and fab pAds in half !!! I'm sure I can last until the first of July ! Then it will just be essential not frivolous spends . Nothing I really need .. Just skin care products stocked up , don't need clothes or shoes ( live in jeans and Birkenstocks when not in work and they have plenty of wear left ) hair for free so I'm being strict in July ! Even emptied my Amazon basket of impulse saves :)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/06/2015 14:28

I think Lo-Buy rather than No-Buy

One of the tops I bought was a Uniqlo one that I saw on my birthday but I didn't buy at the time. 2 weeks later I did, so I'd thought about it and didn't impulse buy.

Though I saw some treggings and a jumper in M&S that I am going to buy because I will never find them again (I tried "Black Tegging" on their website and couldn't be sure it was the same ones)

I could lo-spend July/August.
Then I need to peruse winter jumpers. In August Wink

Annarose2014 · 25/06/2015 14:57

I think lo-buys are more realistic than no-buys as you get less discouraged. With a no-buy if you fall off the wagon its tempting to throw it all up in the air, whereas a lo-buy scratches the itch, but in a very economical way.

I'm all for a "Lo-Buy July" thread. (Hey, that rhymes!)

iwantgin · 25/06/2015 16:35

Still in. It's getting tough though - as am starting a new job next week - and have very few clothes/shoes that I can wear.

But will do my very best to hang on until 1 July - Wednesday?

Went and tried shoes on in Clarks. Sale on. ):

didn't buy any though.

mowglik · 25/06/2015 17:13

This has become a lo-buy for me but I have avoided lots of purchases by putting them in a list for purchase in July (but scrubbed quite a few off the list when I decided I didn't want them after all)

Would love to continue this in some vein, either lo spend or putting off purchase for a few days to decide if I really want it

Annarose2014 · 25/06/2015 17:43

I use Evernote as a wish list. I save images into there. That way when I'm ready to buy something again I haven't forgotten what I came across.

Late at night I scroll through and sigh happily. saddo that I am

But quite often I find after a time I delete something as it doesn't do much for me anymore. I'm very glad I didn't buy it then.

AmethystMoon · 25/06/2015 20:46

Greenstone, yes, I'm on my third bottle of St tropez shower tan. I love it. I am tres pale and it gives me a very realistic golden glow. I've been using it to maintain my light tan from my May holiday.
Probably not for anyone that likes a proper Orange tan as very subtle. Dead easy to use though.

ZaraW · 26/06/2015 07:47

I set up a separate account for holidays and weekends away. I also put the money allocated to shopping in there as well. I find it helps as I have problems with impulse control I HAVE to have stuff now. Holidays are more important than accumulating stuff so I would rather see my holiday fund build up.

It's also nice to treat yourself occasionally. My problem is that I thought I needed to treat myself all the time. Though I am getting better.

Twinklestar2 · 26/06/2015 13:24

I've brought 2 more pairs of shoes...

In my defence, my feet have gone up a size since having my son so I'm having to replace all my shoes.

One pair were a pair of lk Bennett brand new courts from ebay - bargain at £21!

And the second were these. I've been drooling over them since they came out, plus they're over 50% off plus I rang around trying to find my size and out one store had them so I HAD to get then or regret it for all of eternity Grin.

daimbardiva · 29/06/2015 17:02

So I've been having a think about how this has gone for me. I haven't managed a no-buy June but it has definitely been a low-buy. I have bought a maxi dress and two pairs of clogs - items which I've had my eye on for a long while and which will become wardrobe staples I'm sure. I also sold more than £200 of stuff on eBay so my purchases were cash neutral.

I think the Low-buy approach works much better for me - at least as far as fashion goes. No-buy just creates too much of a 'forbidden fruit' feeling and the temptation to splurge. Instead I am definitely being more mindful and directed in my purchasing and making sure I can justify the spend and where it's coming from.

I'm being much harder line w beauty stuff - no repurchasing till I need something. The empties thread is helping w that!

Twinklestar2 · 29/06/2015 17:29

Last day of the challenge! Looking back I have brought 5 pairs of shoes this month Shock. But they were needed (clutches at straws!).
