No Spend on S&B during June - Anyone In?

Valsoldknickers · 30/05/2015 11:41

Is anyone up for not spending money on unnecessary S&B items for the month of June?

My finances are not in good order Sad. I did a 'no spend' couple of months with other MNetters (online and lurking) last year. It was bliss to get a credit card bill afterwards with an almost zero balance. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders (albeit temporarily)!

I have enough of everything - hair dye, moisturiser, clothes (if I shifted a few pounds), etc. Any other spending would just be on frivolous crap if I were to continue as I have been doing!

Roll on 1st June, I am tightening the purse strings and hiding my credit card! Come and join the fun ConfusedGrin

Managed to be good over the weekend and agree steering clear of shops is the way forward.
Trying to fill my time with activities not near shops Grin country park for lunch on Saturday and gym and gardening yesterday.
Lots of spending in garden centre unfortunately but at least it's not S&B related and benefits the whole family!

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/06/2015 14:08

I have also got a confession - after doing so well last week and all weekend, today I bagged the last of the new limited edition YSL nailpolishes in John Lewis. I overheard a woman asking for it in Boots, and the sales woman told her they were sold out everywhere, so when I saw them in John Lewis I asked if they were in stock - when the sales assistant told me it was the last one I felt compelled. (It is lovely though...)

Lambzig · 08/06/2015 15:34

Still haven't bought anything. Went shopping with my other sister, but once you look at stuff in the light of "is it really lovely enough to be worth breaking my shopping embargo for?" then it doesn't seem so attractive.

I think it helps that I am a stone overweight at the moment so new clothes aren't going to fix that.

FrugalFashionista · 08/06/2015 15:44

Went to a small department store to get Sodastream refills and immediately noticed lots of really tempting summer dresses. Grabbed the gas cylinders and just walked out. It's all about resisting exposure for me - the longer I stay, the less willpower I have.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/06/2015 19:04

I took DD to Westfield Stratford (I did tell her about 'No Spend June', she said "Well I'm not on it" Smile )

I got a bodyscrub that I was going to buy on Friday but saw too late.

Resisted buying Bodyshop stuff but tried on their new Lime/Mint range.

Bought some bathcleaner (oh the glamour)

DD got a few bits, it was nice just wandering round looking at things without the temptation.

I did take a photo of my newly cleansed, unmoisturised,un-made up face on the iPad Shock. Then dyed my hair, waxed my 'tasche and armpits and decided I really need to work on my neck lines.
I have my new Philosophy cream for my face so everything else I have lurking about will get used on my neck with vengance.
In 28 days, another photo to compare.

Greenstone · 08/06/2015 19:35

Waxed my own legs today. It's such a pain in the arse to do but it is now done, hurray. 70 did you really do your own armpits? I tried once or twice to do my own and was actually whimpering!

Haven't bought anything yet but haven't been near temptation. Am now thinking that I'd love a little pair of red shorts 'to make my summer wardrobe complete' -- this is SUCH bullshit and a good example of how shopping addiction works! 'I just need oooone last thing and then my life is perfect'. Anyway it's still cold where I am.

Plan for tonight is do my feet and paint toenails. Tomorrow do roots.

Some excellent restrained behaviour on this thread ;)

I'm doing well. Had to go to Sainsburys yesterday (food shopping) and ours has a large clothing section. I had a brief wander, then figured that since I wasn't buying I didn't need to look.

I appear to have more than enough clothes in my wardrobe, and enough toiletries to sink a ship - so am very pleased to be doing this 'challenge'.

daimbardiva · 09/06/2015 16:19

Everyone is doing really well - well done. Interesting how some of us are getting to the stage of being able to browse without buying ...it really is a mindset shift isn't it?

Itsalldramarama · 09/06/2015 16:38

Not had a spend yet but still twitchy !! Resisted the order I thought I had placed from perfume court but was still sitting in the basket .. At least not stalking the post man now ;) but have just got £84 cash back from quidco in my paypal .. ...,,,

FrugalFashionista · 09/06/2015 16:51

Still purchase free and more importantly, shopping urge free. I often buy shiny new things out of boredom and tend to lose interest in what I bought quite quickly. So addressing boredom in a different way really helps. A bit bored with my work atm so made it more palatable by doing some tedious paperwork in a nice cafe. Worked well, was able to maintain my focus and felt quite productive. Will try do the same tomorrow.

Itsalldramarama · 09/06/2015 17:02

Well done frugal :) ive had a day of work todAy .. Haven't browsed any skincare, perfume or clothes sites !!! Instead I have made myself some new bracelets to cheer me up and got quite engrossed until school pick up think il hang on until next month to spend my cash back ... We can do it ! :)

AmethystMoon · 09/06/2015 17:08

Still resisting by avoiding shops here! Been on an employment law training course all day so no brain space for pondering potential purchasesGrin

iwantgin · 09/06/2015 17:12

I even tried on sandals today. There was one pair that I really would have liked - but I don't actually need them. If they are still there in July, then I may buy. but it's that damn cold today I have little interest in summer clothes

Our food processor broke down, again. So I had to trawl ebay and Amazon for a spare bowl using the serial number as a search term: circa 47 pages of totally baffling parts & no cigarConfused Shopping can be totally un-fun sometimes!!!

Though I had to close the browser rather quickly when the search bar showed Korean goodies I might also be interested in Wink

FrugalFashionista · 09/06/2015 19:40

Well done Tiz, I had to do the same on Sunday, annoyingly DD1s school shoes fell apart just a few weeks before she is changing schools

frankietwospots · 09/06/2015 21:45

Hoping I haven't been booted out of this group for my lapse at the weekend...but the good news is that I've sold more shoes and bags that I don't use so I'm still up this month!

frugal I had to buy a new food processor bowl this week. I always use espares - might be worth a look.

FrugalFashionista · 10/06/2015 14:18

Thanks so much for your tip Daimbar - you made me recheck, did not find it there but miraculously another site popped up and they had the right one - we may still get some gazpacho and pesto this summer, yay, Ours is an old model, so spares are really hard to track, this is the second replacement bowl already plus I once sent it to France to be serviced

Frankie I think selling unwanted old stuff on eBay and using the money to buy new things is very frugal. No-buys can get too grim and joyless and if you never get anything new. That is not sustainable either, so you have to balance things. So I am definitely not kicking you out Wink Also just generally being more mindful about shopping and thinking a bit harder what motivates it really helps, I find. I read an article recently that recommended lo-buys instead of no-buys (you have a tiny budget every month but have to prioritize).

AmethystMoon · 11/06/2015 08:05

Is it me or are there less of us than at the start of June? Grin

iwantgin · 11/06/2015 09:05

Amethyst Maybe ;)

But I guess if we aren't buying, then there is nothing to report back ?

I'm rocking this challenge. It does show that we can buy less 'stuff'.

Valsoldknickers · 11/06/2015 09:28

Hello there [waves]!!

I am still here! I haven't been well for the last few days, recurring back problem for which I've been prescribed a lot of medication including pain killers which have made me dopey Confused

My 'cheating parcel' (swimwear) has yet to arrive. Will report on what I send back once it arrives and I try them on.

Picked up a lovely purple nail polish in the chemist while I was waiting for my pills but promptly put it back!

The level of commitment here is pretty amazing! I hope the home beauty treatments have gone well. I did my roots just before my back went (thankfully, because it's horrible to feel like crap with roots!)

All this ebaying mullarkey has got me thinking. I have donated nearly everything to charity but there are one or two coats I could sell to help balance the books.

Going for a lie down / sit down / hanging upsidedown (whichever is comfortable)!

Ah good to see there are still a few of us about and yes maybe no buying is why people aren't posting.
Hope your back eases up soon Val, but on the plus side your roots are done Grin S&B priorities and all that!
Shopped today but for Father's Day card and presents. I am finding knowing I am not allowed to spend makes it easier to resist. Indeed to have months like this more regularly. Maybe plan months to shop based on sales and seasons, then no shopping the rest of the time? Could do four months allowed and eight months not? I might actually plan a better wardrobe this way?
wanders off to ponder
