No Spend on S&B during June - Anyone In?

Valsoldknickers · 30/05/2015 11:41

Is anyone up for not spending money on unnecessary S&B items for the month of June?

My finances are not in good order Sad. I did a 'no spend' couple of months with other MNetters (online and lurking) last year. It was bliss to get a credit card bill afterwards with an almost zero balance. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders (albeit temporarily)!

I have enough of everything - hair dye, moisturiser, clothes (if I shifted a few pounds), etc. Any other spending would just be on frivolous crap if I were to continue as I have been doing!

Roll on 1st June, I am tightening the purse strings and hiding my credit card! Come and join the fun ConfusedGrin

I'm still here and haven't brought anything Grin

ZaraW · 12/06/2015 07:52

No spend here either. I have issues with impulse control if I see something and I love it (and can afford it) I have to have it now. For the last six months I take a step away for two weeks and if I still love something I buy but more often than not I have forgotten about it.

With the money I've saved I've put it in a separate account and it soon adds up. I'm going to NY next year and hopefully with the money I save that will pay for the hotel. I have so much stuff but it's experiences that make me really happy.

I want to buy the Footner before my hols but it's probably more useful afterwards ? Will stick to scrubbing feet. Might get one for teen DS as his feet are a bit gnarly in places. can watch his peeling skin instead

Love the idea of 'lo-buys' Frugal!

I've made over £100 from sales in the last week so doing well! Can't be doing with eBay. Facebook selling groups are the way forward!

FrugalFashionista · 12/06/2015 11:57

Zara it's exactly the same for me. Clothes, bags, makeup, skincare, whatever, although I love buying shiny new items and often make impulse purchases, but they do not provide long-term satisfaction. I grow tired of them quickly (this is why 'investment purchases' rarely work for me - they stop feeling fun and start feeling like a chore). Delaying gratification helps, I usually am after something else after the waiting period is over. Investing in experiences, on the other hand, really works for me. I love trips, vacations, new countries and new restaurants. I don't regret any money I've spent on travel.

I'm also using a separate savings account for big things. After seeing my savings dwindle during maternity leaves, I've tried to be much more mindful about how I use money for a couple of years, 'paying myself first', trying to prioritize things that have lasting value for me.

FrugalFashionista · 12/06/2015 12:02

Oh and still on the wagon.
Amazingly, I don't particularly want to buy anything atm. Somehow this season's fashions aren't really my thing, so hoping to bypass the sales altogether. I found an unworn dress in my wardrobe, the skirt felt too short because I had always tried to wear it with heels but it is just right with flat sandals. So I am actually shopping in my wardrobe...

Congrats Frankie that is great progress!

Twinklestar2 · 12/06/2015 13:00

Well done Frankie and frugal!

frankietwospots · 12/06/2015 18:29

Slipped up today - picked up a boho top from Sainsbos that I'd seen featured on a blog I follow and couldn't resist. However, I've tried it on and it doesn't sit right, so it's going straight back. Damn you temptation!

ZaraW · 12/06/2015 18:52

Frugal that is exactly what I'm like I love shiny new things but get no satisfaction when they arrive and that's a problem (I don't go to shops I do most of my shopping online). I stopped reading fashion magazines and subscribed to a travel magazine so spend time planning trips instead of thinking about stuff.

We're off camping next month cheap and cheerful with a few days in the bush thrown in, getting down to basics. I love being away from the temptations of the real world and looking to focus on spending time with friends and family.

Valsoldknickers · 12/06/2015 19:53

My naughty parcel arrived today (swimwear from HofF sale). It made me smile and I feel a little bit excited about my hols.

Unfortunately because my back still has me laid up I can't try them on for another day or two.

I'm the same as you Zara, I do a lot of shopping online. Sometimes it takes so long to arrive the novelty is gone by the time it comes! Also, is it just me or are the colours often very lacklustre and disappointing in real life?

Really brilliant idea about shopping from your own wardrobe Frugal! I'm definitely going to play that game when I'm a bit better Smile

Found the low-buy blog post! I am slowly using up my makeup stash, for an impatient person like me it is a zen-like thing, have been at it for more than a year, and it as really changed how I think about makeup and skincare purchases. I have to consider the entire lifespan of the product, will I really want to spend months or years with it?

I used to be fiendish online shopper, but somehow the thrill is gone, at least for the time being I love the thrill of the hunt and the high of saying yes to something, when it finally arrives it is usually a disappointment. I have found a few strategies that work for me. Instead of clothes, I can click a 'buy' button to get the free opening chapter of a book on my Kindle. However, I am only allowed to buy the book if I finish the sample chapter and commit to reading the entire chapter (= I don't buy 99% of what I download, few opening chapters are that compelling Wink). Second, cultural experiences tend to satisfy my need for novelty and I find them really sustaining too, they really stay with me, so I now try to make sure that I go to concerts, museums, galleries or the cinema regularly. If I'm bored, it usually means that I don't get out enough, or there is some other underlying need, like difficult emotions or too little downtime. And when nothing else helps, I go offline for a weekend or longer...

Valsold hope your back feels better soon!

Twinklestar2 · 14/06/2015 07:50

I crumbled and brought two pairs of flats from Primark! But I'll get lots of wear out of them over the summer!!

iwantgin · 15/06/2015 14:52

Successful weekend.

Trawled Meadowhall with DH. He wanted new clothes. I just assisted. Didn't do more than have a fleeing glance at clothes/shoes for me.

Winner. Grin

Itsalldramarama · 15/06/2015 15:14

Still a no spend month for me ! Have virtual shopped and popped things in basket then after a while revisited and thought no !! I don't really need anything ! Made fR to many impulse buys in the past that give no joy in reality ! Woo hoo we are almost half way there :)
And I promise to shop only for necessities in July

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 15:17

Yep the same for me. In some way it's a relief, I don't need to scour the sales this year, I can do something else.

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 15:18

And Gin well done that's quite an accomplishment!

RavioliOnToast · 15/06/2015 15:31

I've also been doing well this month, I bought cotton wool pads but I cut the top off my facewash and am using the dregs Grin same for shampoo and conditioner, cut the bottles open! Anyone would think I'm trying not to spend anything... Wink

frankietwospots · 15/06/2015 16:32

Gosh, you are all doing really well. I have to confess to placing an TK Maxx order but I fully expect to be returning the items as I doubt they will work for me. On the plus side, I sold three more things over the weekend so I'm still up!

AmethystMoon · 15/06/2015 16:48

Arghhh I caved. Two tees in the Me&Em sale. Not good but I do need a few more tops for work and these will work with most of my work trousers and skirts.
On the plus side I sold a dress on eBay yesterday so if I can sell a couple of other bits I will be neutral cash wise.

daimbardiva · 15/06/2015 17:51

I caved - I've ordered a striped maxi dress and a pair of lotta from stockholm's. These are both items that I've lusted after for ages and am convinced will become staples if they fit. If I don't love them they're going straight back. Also the combined cost will be nowhere near the amount I've made eBay selling...so cash neutral if not minimalist!!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/06/2015 00:08

I took DD shopping and bought nothing for me

Took DH out (work trousers for him) and saw some fine ribby sleeveless tops (Primark) £4 each

A bath sponge Grin

And I need a haircut.
I'm doing ok though ...

FrugalFashionista · 20/06/2015 13:49

Still onboard - though after thinking about it a lot I decided to buy new BHA pads last night. I have just six left from my old stash and we are leaving for a holiday in a week. I have nothing that could really replace them and don't want to be spotty on the beach.

Otherwise, no purchases. I don't find the sales tempting atm, somehow this season's fashions are really uninspiring, I don't want to relive the 1970s, already have enough summer dresses, denim shirts, white broderie tops, jumpsuits and T-strap sandals, so nothing really speaks to me.

We are getting ready for a house move so I am emptying cupboards and trying to get rid of extra stuff. I have slight hoarding tendencies but have been able to get the clearouts started - have taken a few bags of shoes to the recycling site and donated two bags of school uniforms (our school has 2nd hand uniform sales, I love that, the proceeds go to charity). And I have tackled the freezer and kitchen cupboards. Have to go through several other rooms, including the walk-in closet and cellar in the coming weeks. It is a huge task but I am going to do one room at a time...

daimbardiva · 20/06/2015 15:50

One beauty purchase for me - B. Fly colic peel from superdrug. Have justified it to myself on the grounds that I've been looking to try one of these for a long time and it was half price - only £3.95!

Have also purchased two pairs of prescription sunglasses - not sure if they count or not?! I have had my present pair for ever and I did get an incredibly good deal on these...£27.95 for two! Hoping the quality is reasonable.

daimbardiva · 20/06/2015 15:51

Argh, I'm being rubbish aren't I?!

RavioliOnToast · 20/06/2015 16:26

where are you all selling your things? I have two pairs of iron fist shoes to get rid of, one pair is unworn the other worn once (with tights, I'm funny about bare feet in shoes haha)...
Just ebay or on Gumtree too?
