Concerns about racism

1000 replies

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 08:33

Hi there Mumsnet HQ

Many of us are concerned about the uptick of hatred, xenophobia and racism on the site over the past couple of weeks. Most of the bigotry is focused on asylum seekers. MNHQ will of course delete racism etc. if reported, but this has gone way beyond a few hateful posts.

Links below to three examples of threads which have descended into real nastiness.

Cheers.

It would be so easy to prove the point by providing link ….

fake news til someone posts a link.

So someone posted a link for you and you're still complaining. And didn't someone also send you a link by PM?

What more do you want? The hand of God writing it in the sky?

Has anyone got any nice recipes for savoury treats? I don't have a very sweet tooth.

I make a lovely rosemary and cheddar cookie. Can dig out the recipe if you fancy that.

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 23:44

I really need to go to bed now, but I saw this on another thread. It is about how the discourse around immigration poses a danger to the justice system. Dominic Grieve was not a lefty last time I looked.

@BeckyAMumsnet (I know you're not there now, but maybe if you're around in the morning!) I think this is pertinent to the concerns raised on this thread.

Tory and Reform politicians endanger trials with immigration ‘hysteria’, say former ministers

Former attorney general Dominic Grieve among those criticising politicians for risking contempt of court

That’s concerns about Reform though, a separate matter and yes I agree they are dangerous.

They are chilling and I too am worried about the rise of far right ideology as a response to our self defeating asylum policy. Because it’ll drag everything down with it - decent legal migrants, women, the disabled. It always does.

This whole situation can be avoided by addressing concerns and not trying to cover things up, but I doubt that will happen and so the far right will flourish.

Concerns are being addressed though. It’s a small part of the big problems this country has but people arriving by channel boat are on all news services all t(e time and all parties talk about them endlessly. There’s more important things I would like to be addressed.

They’re not because the issue continues and no concrete or radical steps are taken. It’s like saying we’re dealing with climate change by tinkering about with our net zero goals, they’re not nearly enough.

You said concerned weren’t addressed. They are. Nobody is covering it up. Solving it is impossible without global cooperation, as with climate change.

Rotherham and the many other sites were most definitely covered up. Accurate data is not being kept on criminal offences. Immigration status of perpetrators is not being disclosed to the public, as should be our right.

Perhaps they’ll disclose it and it’ll show asylum seekers offend at a rate comparable to or less than British nationals. But until they release this information, we don’t know.

then the simple answer is only let university professors be the ones that have the conversations etc if they have studyed the issues indepth ?
or we shut down the media on the issues until they are more realistic with their news etc

Which is why I said up thread it'll never be enough, and it's pointless engaging. Best off ignoring.

I dont personally care what rate refugees commit crimes at. It’s not part of my personal stable of worries and I can’t see the crime rate of refugees impacting on crime rates overall in any significant way. Some refugees, will commit crimes. That’s not even in the ballpark of making any impact on my feelings on refugees generally.

Isitreallysohard · 06/08/2025 00:13

Sadly, I think it's a good thing to see what people really think when given the opportunity. Some of the threads are very eye opening and highlight that racism is very much a thing. A big thing.

Ok. So you feel any number of women and girls (and some boys) are an acceptable sacrifice to make in order to accommodate refugees?

Effectively, yes, if you want to be simplistic to the point of total irrelevance about it. By accepting people interacting with others in any way I am accepting their potential…sacrifice

Well, thank you for being honest. I knew people like you existed but haven’t had it confirmed until now.

Any chance of getting back to the point of the thread? I don't think we can expect MNHQ to wade through the ill mannered derailing or the attempts to counter it.

Well it’s more relevant than biscuit recipes. I’ve asked what is deemed race hate by OP, given we have a few threads about immigration running it shouldn’t be too laborious to find an example, but she has declined to do so. So I am none the wiser.

I think at this point there is not much more to be said in terms of the subject of the thread.

MN has made its stance clear. It is up to us what to do next.

I am not going to waste my time now arguing with the racism, trying to point out facts etc. It is pointless trying to reason with hatred.

I will report though. Although I am a bit disturbed about some of the posts that have been allowed to remain, so not certain how much mileage there is on that.

Personally, I am on the fence now about staying here (yes I know who cares, airports etc). But maybe the racism will die down.

Eta: if a person can't recognise any race hate in the three thread examples, then I refer them to my third paragraph. I also suggest they read the post by nauticluscat.

Oh I don’t know, in the threads posted there were plenty of comments suggesting that the problem a poster had was the race/religion of the individual. They were, in the main deleted.

Any comment that generalises about a group of people on the basis of skin colour/culture/faith can be racist. How objectionable those comments are obviously varies.

Accusing people who disagree with you of being rape apologists (as happened repeatedly over the last few days) is ridiculous and doesn’t actually solve any of the issues. As someone who works in a very multicultural school, I find it deeply concerning that there are people out there who have decided my students are a threat based on their faith or where they or their parents have come from.

I can’t provide links to the worst comments as they were, rightly, deleted.

LlttledrummergirI · 06/08/2025 08:20

I'm still reporting in the spirit of learning about what mnethq deemed acceptable compared to my tolerance for hatred, bothering and demonisation of those less fortunate.

It appears my tolerance levels are much lower, but as nobody has come back to me to explain the decisions one way or another, I have no idea of why, or where the line is. I reported quite a few posts yesterday to try to help my understanding, but had nothing back.
