Concerns about racism

1000 replies

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 08:33

Hi there Mumsnet HQ

Many of us are concerned about the uptick of hatred, xenophobia and racism on the site over the past couple of weeks. Most of the bigotry is focused on asylum seekers. MNHQ will of course delete racism etc. if reported, but this has gone way beyond a few hateful posts.

Links below to three examples of threads which have descended into real nastiness.

Cheers.

Again, the threads are 8ndicative. There are so many similar ones it’s impossible to remember where you saw specific things.

Righto.

A lot of vegan recipes use aquafaba instead but I’m not sure exactly how.

Ah yes thanks, I've heard of aquafaba but never actually really used it. Will have to give it a go

Fair enough. I think my concern is that we’re seeing a worrying increase in the number of threads/posts which are not really reflecting public opinion so much as cynically and deliberately attempting to affect it.

Coupled with racist tropes, fake statistics and the use of AI, we’re in for a bumpy ride.

This. Absolutely this.

It is already rife on Twitter. The number of bots pretending to be proud British patriots is ludicrous. The same will definitely be happening on here. There was a definite influx of odd posts in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I remember in particular one insisting that the UK had lower living standards than Ukraine so Ukraine didn't need support.

This wave of anti-immigration posts is obvious astroturfing. I've been on MN a long time. I've seen what the standard Islamophobia/racism posts are like. Those included in the OP are not like those, neither the OP or the subsequent replies.

If MN doesn't want to end up being a bunch of bots and troll farms talking to each other, then someone needs to be done.

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 22:42

JamesMacGill · 05/08/2025 22:21

That’s fine; I get that, but given a few threads are running at the moment which OP seems to be alluding to I thought a quick extract would be easy.

I didn't "allude" to them. I linked to them in my OP.

You don't think there is any racism on these threads MN. I don't agree. Neither of us are going to change the other's mind

Now, I don't want to engage with you any further as it is pointless for us both.

Thank you OP for this thread. I had reported one or two of the hateful threads and had been dismayed to see them still stand.
Hopefully this thread has helped to focus MNHQ a bit more on the issue.
And it's really nice to hear the voices of other people who are appalled by the racist tone of some of the comments on MN recently. We all need to push back against it so it is good to hear voices challenging it

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 05/08/2025 22:52

Zonder · 05/08/2025 09:53

However, we can’t just shut people down who have different views - and that’s where the difficulty for MNHQ lies.

Definitely @BIWI but it would be nice to think they would fact check abject lies.

I think it boils down to nobody from MN reading any of the threads unless a specific post gets reported. Even then they won't delete it just for being hate filled lies.

I’ve reported a few posts for exactly this. Hate filled lies. Mnhq doesn’t delete them.

But they banned a make poster for his thread because they weren’t sure why he was posting. Odd decision imo. Especially when they let racist or hate filled lies to stand. Misinformation should be challenged but it’s getting ridiculous.

Because I’m not your secretary. You can type just as well as me. Hell, you could even copy and paste what I’ve told you I searched for.

The “news” doesn’t exist. It’s fake news about journalist infiltrating far right.

It’s not about your secretarial duties, it’s about educating each other on the issue. It’s clear - There’s no news about the far right …. It’s fiction. MN posters trying to scare others to join the lefty hysteria with fake info,

spoonbillstretford · 05/08/2025 22:57

I agree, people get banned for calling out trolls, minor spats and calling one another names yet all this racial hatred, intolerance and fake news is allowed to stand and proliferate.

It's nobody else's job to try and educate you on racism. What are you even on about, anyway? News about the far right is "fiction?"
Also, again, being against racism and calling it out is not a left v right issue so not sure why you're trying to paint it as one.

I am guessing what your response will be.

A year of hate: what I learned when I went undercover with the far right

The long read: Working for Hope Not Hate, I infiltrated an extremist organisation, befriended its members and got to work investigating their political connections

It would be so easy to prove the point by providing link ….

fake news til someone posts a link.

Again, not being racist isn’t something which is only left wing. Decent people of all political persuasions manage not to be racist.

Like the one above your post.

@BeckyAMumsnet this is a good example of a continuous stream designed to wear down genuine posters. At this point, I struggle to believe that this poster is genuinely posting in good faith.

They're really easy. I'll send you the recipe if you like. The absolutely key thing is not to chicken out of taking them out when the timer runs out, you stick in a skewer and it doesn't quite come back clean. If you've got mild cracking on the top, they're DONE. Leave them longer and they turn into stodgy cake - still taste great, but without that brownie texture.

Please can I have the recipe too? They sound amazing!

I agree completely with the sentiments of the article, unreservedly.

But why is it when you point out most Islamic countries are far right, everyone balks and refuses to acknowledge it? Or acknowledge that coming from a misogynistic country makes men more likely to have misogynistic views (because otherwise who are the public there supporting the show?).

I think this is what frustrates posters like me, and I’m a Lib Dem voting remainer who won’t be voting Reform even if my feet were held to the fire because I think they’re charlatans who will destroy the environment.

These topics are uncomfortable but they aren’t going anywhere, and simply accusing everyone who says something you don’t like of being racist is frankly driving support for Reform.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 05/08/2025 23:32

Just did my own bit of googling and came up with a number of stories like the Guardian piece about journalists etc infiltrating far right groups, because the bleating of "fake newsflash doing my head in.

As an aside, propaganda was the biggest Nazi tactic used to focus hatred, and widespread use of relatively new at the time, but becoming more mainstream, technology, ie radio and film was a fertile breeding ground.

Of course back then it was carefully curated by a political party openly seeking power, however today things are so much more complex when virtually anyone with a smartphone and a few apps can throw out any bilge they choose potentially to an audience of millions, and with the advent of ever improving AI it's very difficult to know what's real and what's not.

Any platform can be infiltrated, and of course on anonymous forums it's not always easy to sort the wheat from the chaff so to speak. Cambridge Analytica proved the power of the Internet in terms of deliberate skewing of political outcomes, but unfortunately because money is more important than anything else, and the amount of instability in the world, turning the tide is extremely difficult.

That Guardian article was chilling.

Also, we have the 77th Brigade pushing our governments agendas online too, which is supposed to be our cyber defence in combating online radicalisation, but given the lack of trust in the last two governments I'm not sure how effective they are.

Anyway, apologies for the slight tangent, it's just a whole area I'm particularly interested in.

Has anyone got any nice recipes for savoury treats? I don't have a very sweet tooth.

They are chilling and I too am worried about the rise of far right ideology as a response to our self defeating asylum policy. Because it’ll drag everything down with it - decent legal migrants, women, the disabled. It always does.

This whole situation can be avoided by addressing concerns and not trying to cover things up, but I doubt that will happen and so the far right will flourish.

I genuinely don’t know what MNHQ are going to do about the CITME board either.

These are all current news topics, the subjects of national and international conversations, but the problem is that SM threads are prone to being artificially manipulated.

Some threads seem to be heavily populated by the predictably entrenched views of the same trigger-finger posters, plus trolls and goady fuckers. Too many to report.

but then the trolls should not derail democracy

Mix oats with milk or oat milk, blueberries and mashed banana and bake. Makes nice but not sweet flapjacks. Healthy too.
