Concerns about racism

1000 replies

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 08:33

Hi there Mumsnet HQ

Many of us are concerned about the uptick of hatred, xenophobia and racism on the site over the past couple of weeks. Most of the bigotry is focused on asylum seekers. MNHQ will of course delete racism etc. if reported, but this has gone way beyond a few hateful posts.

Links below to three examples of threads which have descended into real nastiness.

Cheers.

Now I am probably going to open up a can of worms here, but I am more a fan of Jenever than of the English versions. The fruity flavours on "London Gin" are not so bad, but I really can't see the point of London Gin.

Jen ever is fab. Especially Oude Jenever.
I do like gin, but don’t like overtly flavoured ones. I like ones with clever botanicals. Especially warmer spicy ones. I had one rested in Palo Cortado casks a while back. Bloody lovely.

This one isn’t about immigration. It’s about how MN could/should tackle racism.

Ok fair enough, to be honest I am new to MN and it has me scratching my head at times

I like both. It just depends on what I'm in the mood for. I also have a bottle of delicious spiced rum, complex enough that you'd drink it neat.

I agree on blended whisky though. I treated myself to one distilled here in Suffolk - it benefits from a drop of water to bring out the flavours but then goes really well with my dark chocolate apricot and pistachio nut brownies.

Now I am distraught about the lack of routes to Cuba because my last bottle of great Cuban rum ran out at Christmas. Given half a chance I would probably be the only one on a small boat from Florida going the other way!

Saucery · 05/08/2025 16:51

I like small batch gins from regional distilleries. Nothing fruity, nothing bland.
Damn, now I want gin, but I’m going walking tomorrow and waking up with a hangover will cramp my enthusiasm (never that strong at 6am anyway). Even the smallest amount of gin gives me a hangover these days, the Curse Of The Middle Aged Woman Sad

Climbingrosexx · 05/08/2025 16:45

So why start another one then? Calling people racist just because they have a different opinion should be classed as hate speech! Anyway this is the last thread I am going to open on this subject

If yiu can find any posts calling individuals racist, report. But you will find none on this thread.

Yes, I think the tea references isn't referring to the discussion with Becky Mumsnet, that's what the discussion is about. More about ignoring those who are hellbent on derailing with "define racism' and going round in circles trying to turn it into the same old blah

Yeah, this is exactly why I said earlier that we shouldn't be commanded to explain why something is racist to appease apparently surprised posters...

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 16:52

OnePerkyReader · 05/08/2025 16:45

It seems to me that Mumsnet needs a shake up of their practices. They said they would do more when we had the disgusting incident of CSA being shared, now racism is increasing and the onus again is on other users. Clearly their system isn’t working. They need to make serious changes if the website simply isn’t safe.

Agree.

That's interesting. I'm Dutch and I quite like jenever, but it has to be Oude Jenever and it has to be served cold enough to freeze the outside of the glass. I am however very partial to a gin and tonic.

This thread isn't about immigration, as pointed out. The fact that it's in Site Stuff should really be a clue to that effect.

Now, about the gin vs whisky debate - which side are you on?

My niece owns just such a distillery in West Wales (outs self)

I may well have bought from there! Near a place beginning with M? (don’t answer if you don’t want to!)

No - my username is the clue (I don’t live up there anymore).

I wouldn't be surprised if the posters I've reported today and a couple of days ago have been talked to by MNHQ. I obviously wouldn't know, but interestingly I haven't seen the latter since she was reported and deleted. I think a lot probably goes on behind the scenes that we aren't told after we've reported someone if there appears to be a pattern to their posting behaviour.

Quite, @ilovesooty and we've banned a fair few.

As mentioned upthread, the patten of posting is an important consideration for us.

They’ve done so well. They do the first grain to glass Welsh whisky now too. Barley grown locally, water from a local spring based supplier. Not even Penderyn do that.

@BeckyAMumsnet, I have another question about the threads which @PandoraSocks linked to in her OP.

Your moderators are clearly aware of the threads in question as they have zapped some of the posts. Do they not look at the wider content of those threads and think "this is not in the spirit of the site, we need to take the whole thread down"?

I honestly don't understand it. You say that racism is unacceptable, and I do believe that you genuinely think that, and yet some threads with post after post of racist bile are left to stand, perhaps with the odd post being deleted here and there to suggest a token effort. Why can't you just take them down when the whole thread descends into hate speech?

Thanks for raising this, @MrsBennetsPoorNerves - we often do take the whole thread down. It’s not always a simple call, though. More often, threads include a mix of views, including posters challenging or correcting each other. As you mention, we’ll remove individual posts that break the rules, and if the overall balance of a thread tips into something that’s clearly hateful or no longer in the spirit of the site, we will remove the whole thing. We also rely on the reports to help us spot when that tipping point has been reached so we do urge posters not to assume it's not worth reporting - it always is, even if the individual post you reported isn't deleted at the time.

BIossomtoes · 05/08/2025 17:11

Dark chocolate apricot and pistachio nut brownies.

Oh my goodness, those sound like heaven.

Didn’t you think the injured Gazan children tipped into that kind of territory though? It was vile and stood until it filled up.

What’s with the derailing of this thread? Have I missed something?

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 17:15

@BeckyAMumsnet thank you, that is very useful to know.

There’s been a report from a journalist who infiltrated a far right group saying they had a planned attack on all social media forums, posts to turn them into negative on immigration, thousands upon thousands shared links for others to jump on.
the digital age is ridiculous

MurdoMunro · 05/08/2025 18:11

@BeckyAMumsnet I suggested earlier in this thread that when multiple or daily threads pop up with different title, same topic, that you could consider directing them to the previous one. Is that a go-er?

pointythings · 05/08/2025 18:19

BIossomtoes · 05/08/2025 17:11

Dark chocolate apricot and pistachio nut brownies.

Oh my goodness, those sound like heaven.

They're really easy. I'll send you the recipe if you like. The absolutely key thing is not to chicken out of taking them out when the timer runs out, you stick in a skewer and it doesn't quite come back clean. If you've got mild cracking on the top, they're DONE. Leave them longer and they turn into stodgy cake - still taste great, but without that brownie texture.

That sounds interesting. Do you have a link, please?
