Was anyone on here a tester for this awful new site?

If so, is it appearing as you saw it during the testing and approval phases, or did it look better and then go horribly wrong somehow? Confused

Tried to post about how horrible the random font sizes and capital letters are and got the Ooops, you're not allowed to post message.

Ooo, now working. But these fonts are horrible - too small in relation to the ones above. And then sometimes just using capitals.🙄

I do love moaning about change.

Quite telling that there aren’t hordes of people rocking up to advocate the testing they did.

And, yet again, gone midnight - screen keeps refreshing and therefore losing what I’d just been typing. One of my biggest bugbears before - still happening. Plus a load more shite on top of it 😂.

NurseBernard · 21/04/2022 02:43

OMG the whinging about this…

In another week, the glitches will be sorted and everyone will be used to the new format.

🤷🏻‍♀️

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 21/04/2022 02:45

Don't like any of it, too white, bookmark thing after every post. Original post at the top of every page and especially the date instead of today

Awful, let's hope it doesn't start glitches again like the other week or I'll be off

Well, given the disability discrimination act was replaced by the equality act in about 2011 I think it’s safe to say they don’t have a clue what they’re talking about.

Equality Act became law in 2010. That's the extant law that covers the nine protected characteristics including disability, sex, pg (as separate characteristic), race etc.

'testing'

aka give it a whirl, try using the site as normal and hope for the best.

End User Acceptance testing is controlled I.e. the testers use a script (set of consistent instructions issued to multiple end users) each to perform key tasks in the system, incl use of Accessibility Needs software such as screen readers, zoom screen magnifiers, screen shields for dyslexia) is very different to the give it a whirl and hope for the best testing that was done.

For the user population the size and diversity of MN, the above would have been appropriate, including proper remuneration for time taken.

The platform is completely new so the ability to use a classic view is highly unlikely. It seems like they have gone live with out of the box settings picking up the entire legacy data-set - for example on my Threads I'm On, it doesn't give the ability to filter on "last 10 threads", it gives the entire list back to the dawn of time!

NumberTheory · 21/04/2022 03:14

I "tested" when they asked us to try it out. I fed back much the same as most posters have said about the look and feel. I think there were some issues with missing functionality that I commented on too, but I can't check because I can't find my comment without advanced search!

I'm really disappointed they've actually rolled out much the same site as they tested because I recall a lot of similar comments then.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/04/2022 20:52

Literally not understanding what all the fuss is about. It's not that different.

It’s so similar, I don’t get the fuss. MN really can’t win. These changes are very minor.

Fearitcatches · 21/04/2022 03:54

The functionality is awful - and not only am I having to log in each time I ‘visit’ but each time I go to a new thread. Very annoying.

alltheteeshirts · 21/04/2022 04:01
  1. I am now seeing more ads. It's annoying, but MN were never going to show fewer ads.
  2. The amount of whitespace suggests it was designed for use with a phone, not a desktop. Which is annoying, but I can understand, given the majority of website traffic typically comes from mobile browsing these days.
StAgur · 21/04/2022 04:05

It's actually a relief to know that the problems are with the site. I thought that my PC had developed a serious bug and spent ages trying to find ad blockers etc. What is the point of the change? It's appalling.

Girlking · 21/04/2022 04:05

I don’t understand why they changed it?
what was wrong with the way it was?
so disappointed every time I checked in today 😐

You must be spectacularly unobservant!

Laiste posted side by side screenshots of old MN and new on the AIBU thread

"To wonder what happened overnight?" (can't link now, another improvement)

Rummikub · 21/04/2022 04:29

I tested the beta site once. It was in active for ages asking for testers. I commented on the white space being too much. Preferred it before. Also commented on the bold names rather than posts seeming odd.
my phone screen is tiny and so it really does make a difference the increase in white space. I see less now.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 21/04/2022 04:40

Why change it? I’ve been logged out and had to completely re-register. I miss the old format. This feels sparse and clunky.

Claricethecat45 · 21/04/2022 05:05

It is awful. No advanced search option...clunky, hard work, harsh all round....really really bad idea to change...bang goes my relaxing scrolling during lunch break ...

I don't mind it! Using chrome on a google phone. Stays signed in, haven't had those massive ads taking up half the screen. It's ok.

I'm also using Chrome on a Google phone, and the functions I relied on to use the site don't work (won't go into them again, have already put them on the main thread about this).

It looks okay, bit too much space, but I'm finding it time consuming to use. Attached images are tiny too, but at least I'm getting the cross to close them down now (wasn't first thing yesterday).

And I've had to log in so many times!

aLilNonnyMouse · 21/04/2022 05:46

It looks fine on my phone, but on my PC it's horrific. Barely 25% of the window is actually being used, just one very thin, off centre column with acers of white on either side. It's blinding to look at. The old site was much more balanced colour wise and didn't hurt to look at in a dark room. Added an image to demonstrate.

I mostly use it with my laptop and I find the wide margins at both side irritating. I'm assuming these will be populated with ads at some stage soon, but it's just a huge waste of space right now - so irritating when you go to the effort of having a bigger screen and then websites only use the middle of it anyway.

I've always hated the pop-up videos when reading (never posting) on my tablet. I realise I should get into a better habit of actually sleeping my tablet, but I'm so used to using it for a few minutes and then putting it back down, unused, to time-out after a couple of minutes.... except that, because there's a video playing on loop, it keeps running forever until I come back to grab it for a few more minutes and find the battery is dead.

Mine probably 'only' wastes 30-40% of the screen with the blank side margins - Opera browser.

Fiddlefree · 21/04/2022 07:25

The worst thing for me is the bookmark feature no longer works. So annoying.
I can bookmark my place but when I go back to the thread it takes me to the beginning not my bookmarked place.

BaronessBomburst · 21/04/2022 07:31

The font is awful. I can hardly read it on my phone.

Dogsinpajamas · 21/04/2022 08:03

I can’t find how to watch a thread without posting on it? If that’s the same for everyone threads will fill up with people posting to follow it

There’s a downward arrow at the top of the thread. This includes an option to Watch this Thread
