New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars.

When I reported one particularly vast example to see what happened, they apologised for the server error and took down all but one of them.

I mainly use style and beauty topic and the new website destroys photos. The preview in the thread photo is often bigger than when you click on it! It’s useless and takes the fun out of posting outfits. Can this be sorted @JustineMumsnet @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet @KatyMumsnet @SueMumsnet @Anyone?

Even for threads I’ve started - it’s not showing either there nor in the list of talk topics. Whole boards aren’t there any more!

Yep it’s on the list to be fixed as soon as possible

The functions previously listed at the top of the page have disappeared for me. I used to use Flip and Watch This Thread a lot. Also lots of wasted white space. Generally harder to move around.

Are we getting any nearer to getting shot of the annoying blank grey 'advertisement' box at the top of the screen? In landscape mode, I'm left with 5mm of visible space when my keyboard is in use. In portrait, approximately 7 lines of text.
It's hard work.
An update or an acknowledgement of this issue would be useful.

Being spammed by emails about new posts on threads I've already read and/or unwatched. Please sort this out because, as I said, you're just spamming at this point.

Where is the Search on desktop? I can't find it anywhere...

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave inexplicably there is no link to the main search page anywhere in desktop, I've tried to raise this with MN on one of the threads specifically about search. The only way I've found to get to it is to put in the full URL www.mumsnet.com/search

Thanks @tribpot! It really does seem the new site was designed exclusively for mobile and no thought went into how it works on desktop.

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave Yes, I'm all for 'mobile first' design as some sites are appalling to use on a phone (although I'd argue MN is pretty rubbish on a tablet as well as they don't seem to understand how responsive design works). But on desktop it is very poor. Completely missing functionality does suggest there's no automated testing of changes.

It’s pretty rubbish on my phone too. I don’t use the app so I don’t know what that’s like but the website on a phone is awful.

I can see a search box, and I'm using it on my laptop. There's a bar across the top of the page, with the Mumsnet logo, then the search box, then a button for Active discussions, then a button for My Mumsnet.

I'm guessing the updates why my premium subscription isn't showing up anymore - it just asks me to (re)subscribe

Hi - yes we're looking at this. You can get to the main search page by typing your search query into the box and then clicking on the magnifying glass icon next to the search box on desktop - or by pressing enter after you've typed your search query.

If you just type your query in without selecting the magnifying glass or pressing enter, it will bring up a limited preview screen showing your search results. We'll look at how we can make getting to the main search screen clearer as appreciate that the limited preview screen is confusing some people.

Bookmarks are still not consistently "holding". I just bookmarked the thread in this photo - time stamped at 15.55.

I go back in at 16.14 and it has reverted to a very old bookmark. I'd suspected that this was happening as I was thinking I was losing my mind and not actually bookmarking when I thought I had

I'd stopped doing my "workaround" (of taking off the bookmark, exiting the thread, going back in, flipping it and then bookmarking it again) as bookmarking seemed to be working properly again on other threads - but it would seem to be an intermittent "fix"

I've just unsubbed from all notifications. It will definitely mean I visit the site less but I'd rather miss out than keep being spammed 👋

On the desktop version on my iPhone I am back to getting a 400 error message when I click on a link

You might need to clear your cache.

I continue to be unable to read the images people post of screenshots, or of much else come to that.

An example would be on page 7 of www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4539506-ukraine-invasion-part-23?page=7&reply=116942759 at 29/04/2022 19:14, a post by MMBaranova. It is not possible to read within the thread, being 5cm wide on my screen. When I click on it to get an enlarged image, it is all of 10cm, and the writing is still very difficult to make out.

This has not been a problem before the board was "improved".

Please can you make the images better, or provide some way to make them full-screen so there is some point in having them at all?

And thank you, while I am here, for the reply-box size increasing downwards as my posts get longer. I do appreciate that.

Well this is an unpleasant surprise.
I've been in the UK and too busy to MN for most of April, get back to Aus and find this.
Ugh.
I'll be grateful when my preferred settings for colour of OP and colour of my posts starts to work, as currently it doesn't.
I'll just have to put up with the change, I'm sure - but it's just another "FFS" for me at the moment.

I'm wondering if/when links on the Android app are ever going to work?
