Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your feedback so far!

We didn't build the threads to change once you've read them so we will take that on board.

The consent pop up should only show once, so if you're seeing it more than once then there is an issue. @Rafting2022 @CloseYourEyesAndSee please can you tell me what browsers you're using so we can look into this?

@Rafting2022 can you contact me via PM or at [email protected] to tell me which watched threads are missing? Everything looks ok from our side.

@UniversalAunt the font size is actually the same as the old site - perhaps there's a setting on your phone to change it?

@Somanysocks sorry that your colour settings haven't carried over properly - if you want to change them you can go here to do that - www.mumsnet.com/settings/talk

@Happylittlethoughts you should be able to hide threads or topics and keep them hidden now. You can do that here - www.mumsnet.com/settings/hidden-threads

DropYourSword · 20/04/2022 05:53

Think this will take a little bit of get used to!

Cant believe the Hmm or was it [hmmm] is gone!

It's still there...we've added a text edit box to make it easier to post links, format etc - there's an emoji button in the right hand corner and all of the Mumsnet emojis are there....

New Talk launching tonight - please read!

KatyMumsnet · 20/04/2022 06:01

@BirdWatch if you managed to log in successfully then you don't need to make a new password

@DropYourSword all the Mumsnet emojis have been carried over to this system and you can find them in the emoji picker under the 'M' symbol

@skippymcskippy sorry that your colour settings haven't carried over properly if you want to change them you can go here to do that - www.mumsnet.com/settings/talk

KatyMumsnet · 20/04/2022 06:02

Hi @GreenFingeredNell15 can you tell me how you're accessing Mumsnet i.e. mobile website, desktop website or app? If you can also tell me your device and browser details that will help us look into the issue. Thanks!

TenInSport · 20/04/2022 06:02

I'm having problems when I open photos on threads. I'm using the website on iPhone and the cross to close the photo is not showing on the page. Tried using pinch zoom but I can't make the page small enough to get to the cross.

Yep - good spot - thanks for reporting. We'll get this fixed asap.

SueMumsnet · 20/04/2022 06:09

MadameFantabulosa · 20/04/2022 06:08

A thread in OTBT is showing in active conversations. And when you click on it, it says that OTBT threads won’t ever appear in active conversations. I imagine some people might find this distressing.

Thanks @MadameFantabulosa - we're sorting this now...

SueMumsnet · 20/04/2022 06:16

Levriers · 20/04/2022 06:13

I like it so far, other than the threads not changing colour when you’ve read them. Who on Earth thought that was a good idea ?!?

It's a miss @Levriers - apologies. We'll get it sorted asap.

KatyMumsnet · 20/04/2022 06:19

@Jbck can you send me some links for the pages where you're seeing the 'back of cushions' messaging so I can see what's going on?

To view all messages on a thread you need to change that in your settings, you can do that here - www.mumsnet.com/settings/talk

Thanks @HarlotOTara - we're on this right now...

ImAvingOops · 20/04/2022 07:47

I can't find Hmm either in the emojis. Or the big grin.
Had to type out the letters. Can you please put the standard emojis back at the bottom

Hi @ImAvingOops - the Mumsnet emojis are there - under the "M" when you click on the emojis icon

@EarringsandLipstick

sorry that your colour settings haven't carried over properly - if you want to change them you can go here to do that - https://www.mumsnet.com/settings/talkk*

It's really poor that that's your reply - surely you tested this before launching the new platform. Users shouldn't have to reset everything if this was done.

I'm always perplexed how MN - which has the revenue to do it properly - struggles so much with fairly straightforward fixes.

So I've gone into settings.

My posts and OP's were both set to ForestGreen (oddly)

There's no option for Red - which is how mine previously appeared in the app.

I've changed the colours anyway, logged out & in again, and so far, don't see any difference.

There are a few glitches with the App - apologies for that - we're on it and working through them.

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 08:40

SirChenjins · 20/04/2022 08:22

Has this been checked to ensure it's meeting accessiblity standards? It really doesn't look like it.

How on earth do you see more than one or two posts at the same time - and why are they all bunched up over to the left with so much grey space around the text boxes.

Plus everything else that pps have said.

MN - I hope you didn't pay a lot of money for this, it's spectacularly awful.

Yes it's been tested for accessibility but please let us know if there are any particular issues as it's something we're always looking to improve on. We've also extensively tested a beta version with users for a few months. We've got a few glitches (especially with the app) that we're working through now - not unsurprising given the size and complication of the legacy platform - and we'll get them sorted asap. Meantime apologies for any inconvenience.

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 08:40

Londongent · 20/04/2022 08:40

Definitely needs a change of colour once you have read a thread. I used to scan the page to see what was new that I haven't read.

Agreed - we're on this

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 08:54

AchillesPoirot · 20/04/2022 08:42

@JustineMumsnet the font on threads I’m on and active is tiny. And it makes it hard to read. And I’m only old. God knows how someone with sight difficulties would cope.

iphone. Safari.

Would you mind taking a screenshot Achilles (it's not a universal problem so would be good to see)

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 08:55

girlmom21 · 20/04/2022 08:52

The iPhone app isn’t working. Everything in active are zombie threads, “I’m On” keeps saying it can’t connect to the server and I can’t post on this thread to tell you about it without going on to the mobile website. All contributors except the OP are showing red.

We're on this and will fix asap - apologies meantime for the inconvenience

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 09:04

MinkyTunes · 20/04/2022 08:50

@JustineMumsnet As a PP has said, the screen is very bright and too white. I do have migraines, but it makes it very difficult to read. Whereas on your post where it is highlighted in blue, it is much nicer to read. Is there a way we could highlight all posts in a different colour (as well as the OP, our posts and MN posts?)
The spacing for paragraphs seems also too much

We can certainly look at this Minky

SueMumsnet · 20/04/2022 11:01

Hi all - just wanted to post to say thanks v much - all of your posts are really helpful - we're reading every single one of them and this is very much a work in progress. We've fixed a few issues already and are continuing to do so.

SueMumsnet · 20/04/2022 11:32

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 20/04/2022 11:26

But why wasn't all this done at the testing stage?

One or two minor glitches is normal but you've had so many basic things going wrong all morning. This is supposed to be a professionally run website, not something that feels like it's hosted by a teenager in a basement somewhere!

I can't even begin to tell you how much testing was done before we released. Hundreds and hundreds of users tested it exhaustively for us. When a website's been around for 22 years there are so many layers of complexity to work through. I know the problems are annoying, but we're v grateful for all the posts and we'll get as many of them as possible sorted asap. Thanks.

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 09:48

Hi all on accessibility, the site is designed to meet Level AA Conformance as a minimum. It's been tested against various screen readers and assistive technologies using the WAVE accessibility tool. These are the type of things we took into consideration:

Used proper headings, h1, h2 etc
Utilised aria labelling where necessary (popups, dropdowns, hidden content etc)
Ensure colour contrasting meets AA requirements
Used image alternative text
Ensured all buttons/links have text labels
Removed tables from content
Layout is simple and consistent
Ensured all text is legible (style, size)
Ensured forms have labelling and highlighting where necessary

However it's clear from your posts that it's not working as well as before for everyone and we're keen to make it better - we can certainly look at introducing a dark mode for instance and we'll make sure to test it with those who've said they're having difficulty with the new site.

SueMumsnet · 27/04/2022 08:54

Yep it’s on the list to be fixed as soon as possible

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave inexplicably there is no link to the main search page anywhere in desktop, I've tried to raise this with MN on one of the threads specifically about search. The only way I've found to get to it is to put in the full URL www.mumsnet.com/search

Hi - yes we're looking at this. You can get to the main search page by typing your search query into the box and then clicking on the magnifying glass icon next to the search box on desktop - or by pressing enter after you've typed your search query.

If you just type your query in without selecting the magnifying glass or pressing enter, it will bring up a limited preview screen showing your search results. We'll look at how we can make getting to the main search screen clearer as appreciate that the limited preview screen is confusing some people.

I'm guessing the updates why my premium subscription isn't showing up anymore - it just asks me to (re)subscribe

Hi @JeanGabin sorry to hear you've had this issue - we've had an issue with Premium with a small number of users, I'm going to PM you now and get it sorted for you.
