Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

Given we are the content MN sells it's not a great idea to make it less appealing for us to engage with and contribute content.

Key point ^^

All the self-appointed MN prefects huffing and puffing and saying everyone should stop 'moaning' and being 'over-invested' are entirely missing the point of MN's business model. (I'd love to know what content the prefects are planning to contribute to keep exisiting and new users coming and engaging and making MN a great place.)

The reason that I'm bothered about the site's functionality and design is that I want to be able to contribute to Mumsnet. If it's a massive ball-ache to contribute content, then I'll probably contribute less. In large numbers, that could impact on MN's business model.

This post is called feedback btw. It's written to be helpful.

Fuck knows what happened with the formatting there ^^

The italics weren't wanted and now that bloody OOOPS notice keeps appearing.

RubbishDay · 21/04/2022 15:41

I think book marking might be fixed now on the iOS app as the last few threads I opened seem to have worked.

EarringsandLipstick · 21/04/2022 15:43

Yes I think so too Rubbish - so that's something!

I spoke too soon. They do work but if I refresh my watching list and then click on one it goes back to a previous bookmark.

Nearly but not quite Sad

Hi all on accessibility, the site is designed to meet Level AA Conformance as a minimum. It's been tested against various screen readers and assistive technologies using the WAVE accessibility tool. These are the type of things we took into consideration:

Used proper headings, h1, h2 etc
Utilised aria labelling where necessary (popups, dropdowns, hidden content etc)
Ensure colour contrasting meets AA requirements
Used image alternative text
Ensured all buttons/links have text labels
Removed tables from content
Layout is simple and consistent
Ensured all text is legible (style, size)
Ensured forms have labelling and highlighting where necessary

However it's clear from your posts that it's not working as well as before for everyone and we're keen to make it better - we can certainly look at introducing a dark mode for instance and we'll make sure to test it with those who've said they're having difficulty with the new site.

Two things:

  • this list is heavily biased toward certain types of VI. What were the test cases considered for voice navigation/hands free use and TTS or other visual disturbance issues? How was that tested? Hands free processing is simply not possible at the moment and the increased complexity of navigation and other changes aggravate that problem. eg like many voice control users I expand webpages to the max and then navigate by command - that is no longer possible. Tools such as advanced search now have unusable sliders instead of dates (which were very simple to dictate into). A raft of smaller changes add to the problem in real navigation.
  • Wave is low cost to enable widespread use - a few hundred dollars for 15k pages last time I used it. There is nothing wrong with it but its limited, which is why both Wave and W3C stress the importance of using multiple tools. In particular tools which simulate actual user journeys and not just static content and tags. Accessibility is about the overall usage and navigation, not just the presence or not of specific fonts, colours and tags (although I've met many developers who are not aware of this).

As @tribpot says upthread: "Your accessibility statement should indicate who did your accessibility testing for you and when it will next be repeated" Will this be made available? Or at least the list of accessibility problems you plan to fix?

And when I click on an image, it comes up in a box that's actually smaller than the image in the post! Useless, obviously optimised only for mobile devices with no consideration of how it will look on a monitor.

It's rubbish on the mobile site too. Tiny image surrounded by blank screen.

I’m getting this a lot as well

Same, I'm being logged out all the time. Hence the lack of posting and browsing.

00100001 · 21/04/2022 18:44

The site keeps logging me out, every time I load a new page, I have to log in.

I also keep getting the black error message when posting replies for no obvious reason.

Still can't delete emojis that are entered by your emoji menu😁

567and · 21/04/2022 18:45

Sorry if I’ve missed it, but is there any way to block the annoying little videos that jump to the bottom corner of my screen when I’m scrolling? I’m on iPhone latest iOS, but on the website not the app.

Desktop (updated browsers Firefox and Chrome, large screen):
When I click on images they appear tiny in a gigantic box. If it is a foto I might as well not bother and if the image contains writing it is unreadable and I can't enlarge it. But the adds appear gigantic covering most of the strip.
Small strip of content in the middle of the screen covering about 30% of the space available, about 20% empty on the left and 50% empty on the right. So if I reduce the window to 50% of the screen I lose the empty spaces and can open something else on the rest of the monitor.
Tablet (android):
Uses the full screen, but again ads show fine and posted images open twice in a white box - very small and below that tiny.

Sooverthemill · 21/04/2022 19:36

Still getting this and having to log in constantly. And can't go to the place I've book, armed. It's bloody irritating. Please can you revert to the former version

567and · 21/04/2022 19:47

Completely not working on my chrombook now! Tried to login and got this error message:

Oops! An Error Occurred
The server returned a "405 Method Not Allowed".
Something is broken. Please let us know what you were doing when this error occurred. We will fix it as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

So I tried to click on a thread without loging in and a black box appeared over the screen. 😤

I had that message banner earlier on too, and part of me was hopeful that the site was down because they’d seen sense and decided to scrap the updated version!

If this is only in certain topics, you should check your hidden topics in settings, I had this and it seems after the update random topics got added to hidden, once I removed them the 500 error went away.

icklekid · 22/04/2022 05:59

I’ve got one notification apparently on the screen constantly yet when I click it it says I have no notifications 🤷‍♀️

I don't have any hidden topics ( why would you?) hidden threads yes ( well until Tuesday).
