Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

I don't have any hidden topics ( why would you?) hidden threads yes ( well until Tuesday).

I have more topics hidden than not, why wouldn't you is more the question. I don't want to see threads about things that aren't relevant or I'm not interested in. Do you use active convos ? I''d find it really annoying for it to be full of stuff I don't want. I rarely find Ihide a specific thread.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/04/2022 06:59

There are lots of obvious reasons for hiding a specific topic. A woman who is coming to terms with infertility might prefer not to see posts about conception and birth. I hid the Sex topic a long time ago as it seemed to be overrun with detailed explicit posts from men for some reason Hmm.

I’ve got one notification apparently on the screen constantly yet when I click it it says I have no notifications 🤷‍♀️

Same. I have 14 notifications, when I click it says I have none. This has changed from yesterday, when I could see the notifications, but got a black box when I clicked on them.

Ah yes then I understand. I pretty much only look at two or three topics or look at topic list. I rarely go into active except since Tuesday to work out wtf has happened to MN. I look on style and beauty mainly or Google search eg mumsnet ozark

Premium subscriber here - I still have a big blank Advertisement banner at the top of the page which cuts off a lot of reading space. Is this on the snag list?

Android user if that helps.

Also premium. Same on my iphone. Mumsnet is pretty much unusable in landscape on iPhone.

EveSix · 22/04/2022 08:41

Teawamutu, I am also a Premium subscruber, and I raised the blank grey 'advertisement' banner on the morning after the launch. I've not had a response yet and the thing is still there. So annoying! There must be a way to get rid of it. Come on, @MNHQ, you can fix this!

BertieBotts · 22/04/2022 08:49

I'd like to report two more issues, one small, one bigger.

On mobile the button to Post/Preview are now obscured by my keyboard. I keep automatically going to press the emoticon button instead of Post because I expect that button to be there. Instead I have to hide the keyboard for them to be visible.

The start new thread button is now hidden which makes it completely invisible to anyone new to the forum. I've seen a couple of threads now where people don't know how to start a thread so they post on other threads. While this has always happened, it seems more frequent and also more "I'd like to start my own thread but I don't know how" instead of just not understanding forum etiquette.

BertieBotts · 22/04/2022 08:50

Oh OK in fact the start enw thread button has been fixed already. Yay!

I’m getting this a lot as well

I get this wherever a post has bullet points or other internal formatting. Between that and Schroedinger's bookmarks and tags plus losing a usable search my engagement with MN this week is minimal.

Losing half the topics doesn't help either and I've never hidden threads and topics - I tend to just ignore stuff rather than hid it so no idea why they disappear for me.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/04/2022 09:39

I wonder if this new version was tested on Mumsnetters or users of other social media platforms? I can understand why it would seem fine to Twitter users for example as characters are limited. But we are used to being able to write and read long posts.

I use an iPad in landscape and now have to enlarge the screen exponentially or have loads of blank space either side. When I enlarge the screen, I am mainly looking at a black and white page with loads of white dead space and very few words. Posters names are no longer highlighted at the top in blue. A lot of posts look more like basic kindle reader.

I have managed to manually enlarge an example of the old site (on a page I hadn’t closed down) without clicking on it and compare it to the new version. This isn’t even a full page as 2 lines would have fitted below. But this illustrates what I’m saying. Massive text. Hardly any words on a page.

The old site is more appealing. Even the Home Screen - for reference both screens are zoomed out.

Am posting less since this launched due to the above and tiny message box. Far less easy to see what I’m doing. Premium user.

Yep this is happening to me too. Was fine yesterday but not working today.

I have never hidden any topics, but after the update there had been some put in the hidden section. Hence the recommendation to check hidden topics if you're having this error 500.

That shows exactly what I’ve been struggling to explain. The text is smaller. The font? I’m not sure - but the text is smaller.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/04/2022 10:12

When I try and flip this thread to look at the newer posts it keeps closing the App. It's not happening on other threads.

BertieBotts · 22/04/2022 10:54

Hiding topics is great because it means you can have an Active Conversations full of things that you are actually likely to want to read rather than having to wade through pregnancy and weaning threads when your children are school aged.

Also if you feel anxious about something like Coronavirus or whatever you can hide the topic. I have also hidden AIBU since it became a drive by shit on people and leave topic.

BertieBotts · 22/04/2022 10:55

And things like the birth clubs sections used to be hugely active so it was nice to hide the hundreds of different threads for months that have no relevance to you.

Yes I did check in settings and I have no hidden topics ( I shouldn’t) or threads ( which I should). So that error message is ofd

Yes I can see the appeal now it’s been explained . But I rarely use active so for me it’s not relevant as I only go to topics via ‘talk’ drop down or ‘im
on’

STILL being asked for consent after every single click. iPad. Chrome. Please sort this out. It is ridiculous. Still can not access my PMs though I suspect I don't have the three it says I have. While you are at it, remove the stupid notifications for being mentioned rubbish or at least give an opt out. Please.

Same on my iPad and iPhone. I can't be bothered with it. I'm on my work computer now, but I'm not going to engage with MN on my personal devices over rhe weekend or in the evening until this is fixed.

Dinosauria · 22/04/2022 20:32

Two niggles. If I click on the arrow on the I'm On section it takes me to the bookmark not the reply arrow I clicked on.

When changing username it won't accept the name if there is a space afterwards. My names are saved as words so automatically space and they keep flagging up as not recognised. This didn't happen on the old system.

Chrome on Android (although in general I really like it)

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 22/04/2022 20:33

The app has just started crashing for me. Crashed 3 times in quick succession. I’m on an iPhone 12 Pro.
