Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!

It’s November, not December!

The red is jarring!!

I’m not interested in what’s trending on the Christmas board.

It’s annoying.

It’s badly placed.

Please let us turn it off.

What happened to the offer to tone down the 'festive' migraine inducing red and swap it with a green?

It's still bloody bright red!

Dinosauria · 14/11/2021 08:29

And it also removes all the click links I want to read. Normally I navigate from that box, I guess it will mean I spend less time on here.

Waahingwashingwashing · 14/11/2021 08:42

It’s awful. I had a thread about it on a thread in relationships that was incredibly sensitive.

I find Christmas really difficult. I try not to post on Christmas threads and I avoid the Christmas topic. Why do I have to have it on every single thread?

SixQuidGames · 14/11/2021 11:18

For the love of god, can you please remove Christmas threads from the normal trending box if you insist of keeping the annoying red box?

Every single thread in there has been about Christmas. What’s the point of having two trending threads boxes filled with the same things?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/11/2021 13:00

What SixQuid said.

I can't believe that these are the trendingest of trending threads today.

IT'S NOVEMBER!!!!

Agreed, I said similar the other day. Both boxes are currently doing exactly the same thing it's nonsensical. Also I'm incredibly sceptical that in the second week of November the most trending threads across the whole site are soley Christmas related. Hmm
rrhuth · 14/11/2021 14:55

I'm very pro-Christmas and do read the Christmas board anyway but the extra Christmas box is getting to me more, a bit like when I worked in a shop and the bloody music started in November!

DumplingsAndStew · 14/11/2021 16:06

@rrhuth

I'm pro-Christmas too, regular on the Christmas boards, and done much of my Christmas shopping.

My issue with this is that @JustineMumsnet is clearly manipulating threads for clicks. They've changed the algorithm to make the Trending threads mix (sometimes not very well) with threads from the Christmas board, to make it appear these are the most viewed site-wide. I'm going to guess they are looking for some sort of advertising or sponsorship deal (it wouldn't be Mumsnet otherwise would it? 😉) but manipulation of threads like this is proper dodgy and I hope any sponsor picks up on that. Mumsnet have big issues with transparency and its just a further demonstration that its all about the 💰💵

I agree something has been changed. Right now all my trending posts are from the Christmas topic. The top thread only has 26 posts, and they're over several hours as the thread was started just before 2pm. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that these thread just happen to be in the Christmas topic...

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!
SoupDragon · 14/11/2021 16:56

It's based on page views, not posts.

BIWI · 14/11/2021 16:58

I still can't see this red box - thankfully! - but I have to ask @JustineMumsnet @MNHQ what the need for it is, given that everything in the usual trending box is about Christmas?

Whinge · 14/11/2021 17:01

I wasn't aware of that, so thank you. Although by virtue of it being the top of trending I guess that helps with the page views. I do wonder what's going on though. I don't think it's a coincidence that all the topics are from the Christmas section, not even an AIBU post among them.
DumplingsAndStew · 14/11/2021 19:48

They're definitely pissing about with mixing the threads as last night when I posted previously, new Christmas threads were taking over the trending box every time I refreshed the page (every few seconds, just to check)

I typically use the trending box and refresh button on it to view threads, and have definitely browsed far less the past 24 hours as a result.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2021 22:15

Trending.
Really? Is mumsnet so shallow that this what we are all thinking about tonight? I'd be sorely disappointed if this were true.

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!
OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2021 22:19

oh look, by the time I'd posted that it had refreshed.

I wouldn't like to accuse mn of deliberately manipulating things, so all I'll say is that it's jolly odd.

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!
OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2021 22:26

on another thread tech seem surprised about this issue of trending, so perhaps it isn't intentional. In which case I apologise.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2021 22:28

but here is more christmas!

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!
Doubleraspberry · 15/11/2021 07:10

Whinge · 15/11/2021 07:21

It's still all Christmas threads for me this morning. Confused

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!

I think this is the most likely explanation.

JustineMumsnet · 15/11/2021 09:36

Hiya - we haven't fiddled with algorithms to make Trending threads only show Christmas threads. The Christmas Trending box is generating a lot of traffic to the Christmas board which I suspect is partly the novelty of the new box and partly genuine interest in the topic. We're going to give it a few more days to see how things settle - meantime thanks for all the feedback.

Dinosauria · 15/11/2021 09:51

Or mainly because its the box used to navigate MN.
If you placed the Litter tray in a giant box underneath every thread, you'd think we were all cat lovers.

DumplingsAndStew · 15/11/2021 09:55

So why are there many times that the Trending box on the right side (desktop) or home page (mobile, not app) aren't matching up with those top threads on the Trending tab of the Active threads page? It's not consistent, but every so often, the Trending box is being overtaken by solely or mostly Christmas threads, when the active threads page would suggest otherwise.

I don't believe the list changes so quickly, seconds between refreshing and going back again. It's definitely being artificially manipulated in some way.

BIWI · 15/11/2021 09:57

I remember the days when prime ministers and leaders of political parties wanted to engage with Mumsnetters.

DumplingsAndStew · 15/11/2021 12:03

Not the best photo as photo of desktop screen, but to demonstrate that the Trending Box is not displaying the same "most popular threads right now" as the Trending tab on Active.

This isn't accidental. It has been programmed this way, for whatever reason.

@JustineMumsnet - why not be more transparent about that, rather than trying to gaslight users into believing they are mistaken?
